Staff Sergeant Woo Poh Liang, who has been suspended from duty, faces two counts of corruption amounting to S$35,000. He allegedly received the bribes from Beltran Angelo Salvador in September last year in exchange for helping the latter avoid prosecution. Salvador had been facing charges for insulting the modesty of a woman.
Woo, who joined the Singapore Police Force in June 2008, is also facing seven charges under the Betting Act, for illegally betting on the outcome of FIFA World Cup 2014 matches, in addition to another 11 charges under the Common Gaming Houses Act.
