Singapore's 40 richest

by Ellen Joy Anastacio

Singapore's wealthiest are feeling the pinch of rising inflation and decelerating gross domestic product. Fortunes made from real estate have dropped significantly, with tycoons like Chua Thian Poh seeing their net worths fall by 40%

Still on top of the list, however, is last year's richest man, Ng Teng Fock, who added $300 million to his fortune this year. Singapore's newest billionaires are Kuok Khoon Hong, co-founder of palm oil giant Wilmar International, as well as investor Peter Lim.

Foreign citizens who made their fortune in the country are also listed, including newcomer British citizen Sunny George Verghese, head of Olam International. Other additions to this year's list are 24th place Koh Wee Meng of the budget hotel Fragrance Group and Chemoil Robert Chandran's widow Vivian Chandran, who inherited his stakes.

Fashion entrepreneur turned hotelier Christina Ong dropped out from the list due to the drop in value of her Mulberry shares.

Forbes says it calculated the public fortunes using share prices and exchange rates as of August 7.

No ministers name on the list? Surely they have accumulated enough millions to be listed? Or they are exempt from declaring their assets?

I am sure the Lee family is among the top 40. They must be very good at staying out of the radar screen.

The people in this top 40 list have a net worth of at least 9 figures in US$.
My guess is that most of the ministers would be in the 8 figure range.
I didn't see Sim Wong Hoo in the list, where do you think he is ranked?

Almost all of the people on the list are businessman or businesswomen or family members of business people. They have no obligation to listen or help ordinary wage earners or even the poor. However, I think many of them do.
It is the elected government officials who have the obligation to listen and help the common man with emphasis on citizen and the poor. I really don't know whether they listen or do enough. :(
