While overall vaccination rates are quite high amongst our seniors, there are still some in our community who have not been vaccinated. We are therefore doing whatever we can to reach out to them and assist them with the process.
Many thanks to Our Limbang volunteers Elena Lim and Ang Chee Siong for helping to accompany Uncle Chen for his Covid-19 vaccination. Heard that Uncle Chen wanted to buy them a meal to say thank you, but they politely declined

For those who are unable to go to vaccination centres, the Ministry of Health, Singapore home vaccination teams are also making an extra effort to visit them and administer the vaccinations at their homes.
As we get vaccinated to protect ourselves, let's also look out for others, and help them in any way we can.

About a month ago, we saw a large cluster breaking out in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).
We had to isolate and lockdown the hospital. It was very difficult for patients and their families, as well as the hospital staff.
I thank everyone for your understanding and doing your part. Because of your cooperation, we’ve not had any new cases linked to TTSH for the past 28 days and I’m glad that the cluster is now closed.
Our healthcare workers have been working very hard, putting their safety on the line for us.
NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine recently sent me their 10th anniversary commemorative book. Gan Kim Yong and I had written forewords for it.
As I was flipping through the pages, I was reminded of the dedication of those who heal us and look after us - not only our doctors, but also our nurses, hospital staff and many more.
Let's continue to help them by keeping to the safe management measures, and staying united.

Measures could be eased after June 13 as case numbers continue to fall

Singapore should be able to relax tightened restrictions on social gatherings by June 13 if the Covid-19 situation continues to improve and there are fewer community cases, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday.

But the country is unlikely to return to phase three of its reopening immediately. Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said any relaxation of measures will have to be done gradually - in a "controlled and calibrated manner".

Addressing the nation in a live broadcast, PM Lee pointed out that the number of new cases reported daily has dropped since the country went on heightened alert to combat the virus' spread.

Singapore should be on track to bring the outbreak under control, barring another super-spreader event or big cluster, he said.

"We will know for sure in another week or so. Meanwhile, I count on everyone to keep up our efforts and stay vigilant," Mr Lee added.

This means working from home if possible and going out only when necessary, as well as seeing a doctor immediately if unwell - even if one has been vaccinated.

On May 16, the country tightened Covid-19 restrictions to stamp out a worrying surge of cases in the community. These included capping group sizes for social gatherings to two people - down from eight in phase three - and prohibiting dining in at all eateries.

The measures, implemented after new clusters were detected at places such as Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Changi Airport, are slated to end on June 13.

ADEQUATE MEASURES

The multi-ministry task force tackling Covid-19, which Mr Wong co-chairs, has assessed that the current suite of measures are adequate, said the Ministry of Health.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, the task force co-chair, noted there were 182 community cases from May 17 to May 23.

This dipped to 136 cases from May 24 to Sunday.

Breaking down the numbers, he said the number of unlinked Covid-19 cases as a proportion of all cases has since fallen from 22 per cent in the first week of stricter measures to 18 per cent in the second week.

Mr Wong reiterated the need for heightened vigilance.

"As much as there is a chance of us relaxing some of the measures after June 13 if things continue to improve, we must also be mentally prepared that we cannot rule out the possibility of further restrictions down the road if they become necessary," he said.

Lawrence Wong is at Tuas Checkpoint Singapore.

Our frontline officers work very hard everyday to keep Singapore safe. Day in, day out they often have to put on PPE for work, and some even have marks on their faces after prolonged wearing of masks.
Today I met with a few of them from Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and the healthcare sector. They are stationed at Tuas Checkpoint to test the cargo drivers who transport our food and key supplies.
Let's continue to support our many unsung heroes on the Covid-19 frontline. Stay United and we will get through this together!

Global Finance magazine says economic recovery, not being PM in waiting, is Lawrence Wong’s ‘overwhelming priority’

Singapore—A June 7 article in Global Finance, a New York-based monthly finance magazine, touts Mr Lawrence Wong as the “New Finance Minister To Stabilize Singapore”.

Mr Wong’s success as Finance Minister will affect not only the succession plan of the ruling People’s Action Party but indeed, Singapore’s economic wellbeing.

In the article, writer Luca Ventura acknowledged that “Singaporean politics was rocked when Heng Swee Keat” stepped down from being the standard-bearer of the fourth generation of PAP leaders earlier this year.

Interestingly, he noted that DPM Heng’s announcement to bow out of contention to succeed PM Lee came “following Lee’s poor showing in the 2020 general election”.

However, the writer also noted that the PAP’s succession plan had been crafted “long in advance” and that Mr Wong, “the former second minister of finance—and the public face of Singapore’s largely successful Covid-19 response”, was “quickly” brought in as the new Minister of Finance.

But whether or not Mr Wong is in line to be the next Prime Minister is “not clear,” Mr Ventura added, since “the party is determined to avoid another embarrassment”.

He also quoted Meredith Weiss, professor and chair of political science at the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy of the State University of New York at Albany, who said that it would be premature “at this point…to read too much into Lawrence Wong’s appointment as finance minister”.

Prof Weiss added, “While he is succeeding the previous heir apparent to the prime ministry in that role, this reshuffle could prove only just that: a reshuffle.”
Moreover, she is also quoted as saying that Mr Wong’s profile and experience is indistinguishable from that of Education Minister Chan Chun Sing and Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, who are the other 4G leaders “most often touted as a potential prime minister”.

Messrs Chan and Ong “retain important portfolios and remain in contention for the top job,” she added.

But Mr Wong’s capabilities will certainly be tested in his capacity as Finance Minister, as he steers Singapore towards a year of positive growth amid the recent uptick in Covid-19 cases.

His “overwhelming priority”, as well as the Government’s, will be to overcome the pandemic and mitigate its economic fallout.

“Should the containment measures recently reactivated do the trick and vaccine rollout continue apace, the government stands not only to achieve economic-recovery targets, but also to burnish the now rather tarnished trust in Singapore’s political leadership,” Prof Weiss said.

Visited the Tuas Checkpoint yesterday with Gan Kim Yong to view the trial of the new breathalyser test, and check that operations are smooth.
Testing is one of our key strategies to control the infection, along with rapid contact tracing and our vaccination rollout. Don't be afraid when you are offered a test, be it at your HDB block, workplace, or doctor's office - the more widely we test, the better we will be able to pick up hidden infections in the community. This will go some way to help keep you, your loved ones and your neighbours safe.
There are many ways we test, such as antigen rapid tests, saliva tests, breathalysers and wastewater surveillance. We are also working hard to make testing more widely available - soon, you will be able to find Covid-19 test kits at your local pharmacy.
Thanks to everyone for keeping up with safe management measures!
