Had a good laugh when I saw this meme of the MTF press conference on Monday. It’s really not about who answers the questions. My fellow co-chairs and I work closely together to fight the pandemic. We are all in this together, and teamwork makes the dream work.

Singapore—Finance Minister Lawrence Wong may go down in history as being most like the classmate everyone looks to for all the answers.

It certainly seemed that way during a Covid-19 multi-ministry task force (MTF) press conference on Monday (May 31).

Mr Wong co-chairs the task force and has arguably been its public face since the pandemic began last year.

At one point, a journalist asked a question concerning the new Covid-19 variant from Vietnam.

The camera, which had been on Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, caught Mr Ong turning his head to the right, where Mr Wong sat.

On the immediate right of Mr Ong sat Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong, who had already turned towards Mr Wong.

The newly-minted Finance Minister gave the two other men a look, before launching into an answer. He seemed to swallow at first, and jump in his seat, and then quickly found his footing, saying he would continue to monitor the situation.

The wordless exchange among the three ministers can be seen in this CNA clip.

That both Messrs Ong and Gan turned to Mr Wong for an answer — and Mr Wong jumped in to save the day — caught the public eye.

And the internet being what it is, the exchange showing Mr Wong being “arrowed” was quickly turned into a meme, first on the SGAG Facebook page.

Mr Wong wrote that the memefication of the moment made him laugh.

He then tagged his fellow ministers, Mr Ong Ye Kung and Mr Gan Kim Yong.

Mr Ong was quick to respond, commenting, “Lawrence, next time you can ‘eye power’ me back!”

Of 45 new COVID cases in Singapore, 35 in community

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (3 June) reported 45 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore, taking the country's total case count to 62,145.

Of them, 35 are local cases in the community, including 22 infections – who have been quarantined earlier – linked to a cluster at the MINDSville@Napiri Adult Disability Home. The cluster, announced on Wednesday, is now linked to 27 cases.

Of the other 13 cases in the community, 11 are linked to previous infections of whom six have already been placed on quarantine.

Ten remaining cases are imported. Thursday marks the 39th consecutive day with local cases reported.

Finance Minister Lawrence Wong in a video message posted on Facebook on Thursday called the "hidden" COVID-19 cases in the community very concerning, adding that the recent outbreak at MINDSville@Napiri is a "stark reminder" of this sentiment.

"We are dealing with a very infectious and highly contagious strain of the virus, which is capable of spreading much faster than anything we had to deal with before and causing large clusters to break out easily," the COVID-19 taskforce co-chair added, stressing that Singaporeans need to take relevant precautions and safeguards very seriously.

99% of total cases have recovered, 2 in ICU

With 42 more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Wednesday, 61,523 cases – or 99.1 per cent of the total – have fully recovered from the infection.

Most of the 216 hospitalised cases are stable or improving, while two of them are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

A total of 328 patients – with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive – are isolated and cared for at community facilities.

Apart from the 33 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Among the 184 cases reported from 27 May to 2 June, 55 have tested positive for their serology tests, 108 have tested negative, and 21 serology test results are pending.

In a national televised address on Monday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the government should be able to ease COVID-19 safe management restrictions after 13 June if the pandemic situation continues to improve and the number of community cases falls further.

Authorities express concern over ‘hidden’ Covid-19 community cases

Singapore — Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said the authorities are “very concerned” about hidden Covid-19 community cases.

In a Facebook video on Thursday (Jun 3), Mr Wong, co-chair of the multi-ministry task force, said the recent Covid-19 outbreak at the MINDSville@Napiri Adult Disability Home is a “stark reminder of this”.

He added that because the virus strain is very infectious, we “need to take the precautions and safeguards very seriously”.

Under the current Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) Covid-19 restrictions, indoor “mask-off” activities such as in-person dining at F&B establishments have ceased.

Other activities also disallowed during this period include strenuous indoor sports and exercise activities. In addition, personalised services which require masks to be removed (for example, facials and saunas), singing, and the playing of instruments that require intentional expulsion of air (such as wind or brass instruments) are also not allowed.

Urging people to stay home as much as possible and work from home, Mr Wong told people to get themselves vaccinated as soon as possible.

Glad to reconnect with New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Grant Robertson over the phone today. I last met him in 2018 when I was in MND, and we discussed urban planning and infrastructure matters. He shared that he had picked up some useful ideas from that last visit. In Singapore, we too continue to learn from the many policy innovations pioneered by New Zealand. So we have an excellent tradition of learning from each other, and exchanging best practices.
This time round, we spoke about the impact of the pandemic on the global economy and supply chains, and managing the Covid-19 situations in our countries.
DPM Robertson is the Chair of the APEC Finance Ministers' Process this year. He will host the upcoming APEC Informal Finance Ministers Meeting on 25 June. Looking forward to exchanging views with our counterparts and APEC Business Advisory Council members on how governments and businesses can collaborate, to create better jobs for our people.

Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay. In Singapore, we aim to be a City in Nature. I’m sure many of us appreciate our green spaces more through this pandemic, including during this period of heightened alert.
As part of the #SGGreenPlan2030, we are making our city greener and more environmentally sustainable. Previously at Ministry of Education, Singapore, the team and I had committed to making our schools carbon neutral. Now at Ministry of Finance (Singapore), we are supporting tech adoption in areas like agri-food, carbon capture and electric vehicles, and pushing for green finance.
Let’s continue to find ways to be more sustainable, and leave a greener legacy for the generations after us!
