Singapore Aim to be Top 10 Footballing Countries in Asia

This Noordin is another joker. Tell him to work harder as a mayor.

We have too many socio-economic issues to have good footballers like how we did more than 20 years ago. The PAP has sucked out most of the enthusiasm for arts and the culture.

GOAL 2010 was a pathetic attempt at rounding up Singaporeans to a noble cause. Sadly it actually worked. I met a few teenagers who actually thought that we were 1 STEP away from WC2006. Apparently their teachers told them so.

What I see is that Oceania is a meaningless zone. Should have merged into Asia as a whole and the 0.5 slot increased to 1 added to Asia.

Anyway, if Oceania is going to stay as a zone, Singapore might as well apply to join it. It's practically only NZ to deal with, and with a little luck, could get a high profile one inch from finishing line play-off instead of slogging through the Far East and Middle East countries and always got disqualified halfway quite a distance from the finishing line.

Well that a good idea :D

I don't know how to respond to this.... Should I laugh or should I cry... or should I support the cause.... Goal 2010.... the Dream Lives on......

Zainudin Nordin, the president of the FA of Singapore (FAS) feels that Singapore will need at least five years to be among the top ten footballing countries in Asia.

He made the statement following the island republic’s feat of almost making it into the 2011 Asian Cup finals but for a lapse in their last qualifying match against Jordan earlier this month.

The Lions needed just a draw to qualify but instead fell to a 2-1 defeat.

“Football in Singapore is on the right path and we are heading in the right direction,” said Zainuddin, who is also the Mayor of CDC Central Singapore.

“For the last five years, the national team has made remarkable progress where they have won the ASEAN Championship crown twice and also for the first time, made the third round of the World Cup qualifiers.

“The Under-23 squad also won the bronze at the SEA Games last year in Laos which in itself is an achievement when we consider that we had sent a very young team with an average age of just 19.8 years.”

The last time Singapore made the final rounds of the Asian Cup was back in 1984 when they were hosts.

Zainudin had taken over the FAS presidency from Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee just over a year ago.

“The FAS have formulated a Strategic Planning programme but it cannot be initiated in a hurry and it will take time for it to be successful – maybe five years,” said Zainudin.

”The project is not mine, it belongs to everyone. We have strategized a good system from the 16-year-olds to the 23-year-olds.

”The first two years is do well at the ASEAN level and win championships. Level two would be to continue doing well at the ASEAN level and also to be competitive at the Asian level.

The Strategic Planning aims to put Singapore as among the top ten football countries in Asia.

“We have identified the gaps between us and the Asian giants like Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Australia,” added Zainuddin.

“And it is for that reason we have arranged for matches against quality teams like the Brazil Olympic team, Australia, China, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Korea and Liverpool as further exposure for the national team.”

Wait until we really can beat the two giants of South East Asian football consistently - Thailand and Vietnam then we think about taking on the rest

Totally agree with u. Fiji, samoa & new caledonia are not exactly footballing nations. Am not even sure these island countries have a proper football league to begin with.
The Oceania group should just join the AFC & do away with oceania which is a waste of resources.
Same goes for Israel. Its because of the Arab rascism & their tunnel vision, Israel has to qualify to the WC via the Europe way. I thought WC is a sporting event, not some silly Arabs political games. Anyway, Im glad no Arab team has made it this time round. theyre a disgrace. Germany thumped saudi Arab 8-0 in the 2002 WC. Brilliant!

damm funny. honestly, Singapore football is down the longkang liao.

look at our ass-league - dismal turnout, even have to invite foreign teams to come in to boost the numbers and coffers. like that how to be top 10 in Asia?

its the mentality not the hardware. Iraq win Asia Cup with almost nothing. That Zainal can continue to dream loh. Top 10?

You mean Singapore can beat:
Iran
Iraq,
Saudi Arabia
China
N Korea
S Korea
Japan
Qatar
Australia
Bahrain???

as well as other Central Asian teams.

Gosh, i did not even put Thailand and Vietnam

Please loh...top 10....bottom 10 more likely.

Singapore current FIFA world ranking is 120. I don't know what bullshit Abidin is talkign about. Malaysia and Thailand ranked higher than us. And our team is 50% FTs.

I suggest they try to get WC2010 telecast to Singapore first.
Bro

You should contact him and ask him this question directly.
I have a funny feeling that his reply will be that without the telecast, more singaporeans will go out and play real soccer and the chances of having a top 10 team will increase.
Want to bet? :)

Hahahaha! Another wayang show for me and my PAP ministars to perform in order to increased our salaries next year! Hahahahahaha!

Just like the TV Mobile that are installed in all the SBS buses, and it really helps in increasing all the PAP ministers salaries, and also increases the Sinkgaporeans bus fares which gave us very good bonuses every year. Hahahahaha!

Now thinking that my salary will increase by another 10% next year makes me so happy! Hahahahahaha! Wow think of that makes me cannot sleep already. Hehehehehehe!

Haa... Another joker talking cock again...

Singapore football top 10?? This guy is seriously talking nonsense.

Singapore cannot even qualify for Asian Cup 2011 in Qatar how to be in Asia Top 10

Surprising India qualified through winning the AFC Challenge Cup 2008 and
become one of the 16 nations in the Asian Cup 2011 Finals.

To win the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 is the only realistic target for Singapore Lions :p
