If only we are allowed by the law to take down a wild boar threatening our safety. Folks should be encouraged to arm themselves with spears and hunting knives while using our parks. Wild boar meat is the best, one could feed one's family for a month or so with one carcass.

PAPsmearer used to hunt wild boar with his father and his father's friends as a teenager. PAPsmearer might be one of the last few surviving SInkies who have actually hunted wild boar in S'pore, as opposed to Johor or elsewhere. Back then, we used double barreled shot guns. These animals are vicious and aggressive. They will charge u easily. They are low to the ground and fast, and their tusks can really give u a bad wound if they gore you. The thick undergrowth hides them until they are just about on you. Your reflex time has to be very fast to bring the shot gun to bear and fire at them.

These 20 morons going to look for the wild boars are just 20 soon to be victims. You need to have experience trackers to look for signs of their activities. and you need others who know how to flush them out, so the ones with the guns can shoot them. The ones with the guns need to know what they are doing or they will end up shooting their own guy, which has happened before.

But once you get them, and bring them home. The meat is delicious. In those days, the boars had black hairs, these ones seem to be grey. The hair was thick and damn hard to pluck when cooking it. Brings back memories.

In self defence, better than running off and encourage the boar to chase. Or standing there helpless. These grey boars are a hybrid, crossbred with domestic pigs during the time we had pig farms in Punggol. An old ex-pig farmer told me. Hence they are less aggressive than the original stock of black boars.

with thick undergrowth i doubt these sinkies can outrun one boar, let alone an entire clan of it. if i can’t catch my unleased french bulldog galloping at full speed in an open field what makes you think they can outrun a charging boar?

not effective against wild boars moving in thick undergrowth. when they are stationary munching on roots in a clearing and you spot them, perhaps you have a chance. but chances remain slim when you need to reach back for an arrow and create some movement and noise. by the time you position yourself to shoot, it’s gone or worse, charging at you. a shotgun is still the best weapon for close quarter hunting in a heavily wooded area, so papsmearer has credibility there when he mentions the use of a shotgun.

Ok, that makes sense, that they are hybrid with domestic pigs. I don't know how domestic pigs would end up intermingling with wild boars. There was a lot more pig farming in S'pore in the 70s, when my father and his friends were hunting them, they never crossbred. Maybe BS story. But obviously, they are agressive, hence the blood u see on the victim.

Yes, they are burrowing animals, damn good at hiding. That is why u need trackers that can flush them out. The shooters are separate from them. Not everyone who goes in after the boars is a shooter.

Interestingly, the best way to hunt wild boars is with trained hunting dogs. But I never saw them used. The hunting dogs can smell them out, find the lairs and corner them until the hunters caught up. If NParks want to hire me as consultant, they can contact SAMleong. LOL.

In those days there was a strong hunting culture in S'pore. By day, you hunted wild boar with the shotguns. At night, u hunted flying foxes, also with the same shotguns. All the meat from both types of animals were delicious.
