So far all the vitriol against roadies can be summarised into a few points:
1) Cyclists have no right to be on the road
2) Point (1) is because cyclists do not pay road tax. This has been used against cyclists
ad nauseam. Please read up on road tax before exposing your stupidity. And if you were correct, then the unemployed uncles and aunties should not be allowed to cross the street.
3) I pay more so get out of my way - prime example being maxxi's professed big money. We should all give way to Ferraris and Bentleys also?
4) Wearing proper jerseys and looking professional - this one I don't get. How on earth does that irk anyone? Jerseys are worn for aerodynamics, temperature regulation and muscle compression. What about joggers who wear running shorts and golfers who wear polos? Soccer players wearing club jerseys?
5) I want to run them down/hope someone runs them down - So do it ! Put your money where your mouth is instead of being a keyboard coward. Mow down an entire peloton and be the hero that eradicates all pest cyclists. Talk is cheap. But you can't. Because we have laws against that.
6) Errant and rude cyclists who run red lights etc etc - yes of course there are. Same as motorists who do illegal U turns, drink drive and never give way. But let's be clear: there has never been a motorist injured or killed by a cyclist. We do foolish things we pay the price. Just eat your popcorn, pop the champagne and don't interfere.
7) So many of them on the road. So dangerous ! - See point (6). We take the risks and we answer for it. It doesn't concern you. Go bother motorcyclists who weave in and out on the right lanes. Or scuba diving . Mountaineering. Off piste skiing. Whatever.
Having been riding on the road for 40 years I notice one thing. It's always the losers who give you grief. Bully a cyclist while hiding in the safety of their vehicles is their only moment of glory in an otherwise meaningless downtrodden life. This powder keg ignited because of some two bit actor trying to resuscitate his flat lining career and somehow managed to arouse a powerful witch to act in his favour.
Road is for everyone. Slowing down, keeping a lookout and overtake safely and politely is not a loss of manhood.
See you guys on the road
