Cyclist in black holds on to moving bus along Woodlands road & hitches 60kmh free ride
Free rider.

A cyclist in Woodlands was caught on camera performing the illegal act of hitching a ride by holding onto another vehicle.

The cyclist also breached at least two other rules for cyclists on the roads.

A video of the cyclist's antics was uploaded by Facebook page Roads.sg, which said in its caption that the incident took place on June 2, at around 8:13pm.

Cyclist hitched a ride "on" a bus
While cyclists are required to ride as near as practicable to the far left edge of the road, the cyclist in the video was seen between the two left-most lanes in the middle of traffic that had come to a halt at the junction of Woodlands Avenue 7 and Woodlands Avenue 2.

The cyclist was then seen freewheeling while keeping pace with a private bus on the middle lane of Woodlands Avenue 7.

The cyclist had apparently been hitching a ride by holding on to the bus.

The cyclist then let go of the bus and resumed pedalling as the vehicles approached a red light.

The cyclist was freewheeling for about 10 seconds, and covered a distance of approximately 170m.

This works out to an average speed of around 60kmh.

Cyclists must not hold onto other vehicles while moving
Under the Road Traffic (Bicycles) Rules, it is illegal for a bicycle to tow another vehicle, or to be towed.

The rules also stated that a rider must not hold onto another vehicle while the vehicle is moving.

Section 3 of the Road Traffic (Bicycles) Rules via sso.agc.gov.sg.
Cyclist had no lights
The cyclist was decked out in dark clothing and riding on the road without lights.

Cyclists are required to have a white light displayed from the front of their bicycle, and either a red light or a red reflector at the rear.

Lights and/ or reflectors must also be "clearly visible for a reasonable distance".

It is also not clear from the video whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet, which is also a requirement for cyclists who ride on the road.

Enforcement action against errant cyclists
Publicity on enforcement action targeting errant cyclists has apparently picked up in recent months, with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) providing an update on its enforcement operations in mid-April, mid-May, late May, and most recently, on Jun. 6.

This came after Temasek CEO Ho Ching suggested on Apr. 2 that bicycles should be registered, sparking debate.

It was subsequently announced on Apr. 12 that a government panel would look into the possibility of legislating a licence or registry for cyclists and their bicycles, among other matters.

A minor issue as he is not causing any danger to other road users.

In the meantime cars continue to cause death and destruction on a regular basis. You can enjoy a selection of the horrific accidents caused by motor vehicles here

Note that not a single death or injury in the compilation was caused by a cyclist.

Pedestrians sent flying..... was it caused by a bicycle???

He is doing something illegal...and if he is injured by slipping etc..who is liable? Since he is committing an illegal act..and hits a pedestrian or slips n fall into the longkang...who liable?

As is the case with any traffic accident it is up to the courts to decide. However I can assure you that the person most likely to be dead would be the cyclist himself. On the other hand when hooligan drivers break the law it is usually some innocent bystander who is wiped out.

That is why bicycles pose far less of a danger compared to cars.

Good...with this sort of attitude rest assured more cyclists will be run down..so sad for vehicle drivers but good for society as a whole

hahahahah,...so funny,,,will the cyclists sue the metal object on the road,,,these cyclists reap what they sow

A cyclist in Singapore was caught on video crashing head first into the asphalt after his bicycle hit a stray metal object on the road, throwing the rider off balance completely.
The exact location of the incident was not revealed, but the 41-second video showed a group of cyclists taking up the entire width of the left-most lane as heavy vehicles overtook them on their right.
The video was edited with captions to show exactly the moment of impact and foreign object on the road that caused the cyclist to crash.

Stray metal shackle caused crash

The object turned out to be a stray metal shackle that is frequently seen on heavy vehicles.
Moments before falling off his bicycle, the cyclist was seen riding with one hand on the handlebar and flagging traffic down with the other.

The rider could be seen falling onto his head and back upon impact.
The video also showed the suddenness of the fall, which forced the other cyclists behind to take evasive action to avoid also tripping or riding over their fallen compatriot.
One of the cyclists could even be seen swerving instinctively into the middle lane without checking his blind spot as a tanker truck loomed behind him.

Responses

Responses to the video were not sympathetic to the cyclist.
Commenters pointed out that the group of cyclists should not have taken up the entire left-most lane and that they could have practised better etiqutte.
Others pointed out how unforced errors by those riding on the road can cause serious injury to themselves, and at the same time, implicate other road users if cyclists ended up injured or killed after falling into the path of other vehicles.

Nice.

I guess gloating over the misfortunes of others is the very limit of your courage.

Wat goes around comes around...u have been gloating n insulting n terrorising car drivers.. n soo have many cyclists terrorising motorists. So yr kind reap wat u sow....do read em n weep

Not all Tour De France wannabes are the same. I don the full kit but I don’t do stupid things like riding on expressways. I have my fair share of riding over metal shards or rocks and breaking collar bone but this is nothing. Most of the pro-riders have some serious injuries at some point in their career. My injury is less serious since I’m not up to pro-level. But such is life, we take some risks, we live on the edge. We don’t sit by the keyboard crying over injuries to the finger for typing too hard.

before you motorists start thumping your chests and howl at the moon in victory, please note:

1. Driver went to jail

2. $5600 really is pocket change for us Tour de France wannabes.

So motorists please know your station in life, be humble, contrite, keep a safe distance and overtake safely and politely.

Lan lan .
