Siglap

Ocean Theatre, Upper East Coast Road (early 1960s-1985). When Ocean Theatre (海洋戏院) operated at Upper East Coast Road between the sixties and eighties, it showed a large variety of Malay, Tamil, English and Mandarin movies. After its closure in 1986, the premises was converted into a 20-stall Ocean Food Centre, but its business lasted for only a couple of years. (from Remembering Singapore blog).

I only started going to Ocean Cinema in the 1970s and think it had aircon. Only remember the "Circle" seats behind had cushion and the cheaper stall seats were just wooden seats.

From a comment posted on the same FB page where the photo came from, seems it costs $200,000 to build. That was big money in the 1960s and probably came with air con too

".....Old newspapers say Ocean Theatre was opened by Mr Ko Teck Kin, former chairman of chung khiaw bank, on 25 November 1962. Managed by Mr Lee Mah Seng. The cinema cost S$200,000 built by the Ocean Theatre Company. Address: 6 3/4 milestone Upper East Coast Road"

The old flats opposite Siglap Centre are about to be demolished and Siglap will lose a familiar landmark of 50 years. Some of the shops (Clinic & Barber) have moved across the basement Siglap Centre whilst others may just retire or move elsewhere. For those who want to see it for the final time, do go soon.....

Some other photos from RemeberingSingapore Blog to remember another piece of disappearing Singapore :-(

my GP used to be there
the original Wong clinic

Interesting fact: There were the only HDB flats in Siglap or more accurately in the Joo Chiat SMC.
No doubt replaced by another block of ugly condominiums.

Sad to see them go.

Parts of SERS program. Replacement flats in Chai Chee are almost ready so its a matter of time before owners shift to new flats and another landmark gone forever.

Siglap now a rich man area. No more room for HDB flats.

Kind of....if you view from perspective of housing....with the move of the residents from the remaining HDB flats, Joo Chiat SMC or Siglap will be all landed or condo

In the 70s or maybe even into 80s, there was a very nice fried hokkien mee stall at corner slot of Soy Eu Tua. He then converted to Char Kuay Teow as no need to wake up so early to peel prawns and sotong :-) . That was in old days before renovation of coffee shop.

The oldest building around Siglap now must be the frame maker shop
