Shaw Center Is A Ghost Town. Most Tenants Close Shop

All go enjoy air-con only. No one buy anything.

Shop-keepers are museum curator.

Strollers look around happy then go home after enjoying the air-con.

No one is penalising window browsers !

Everyone is showing their displeasure towards the regime !

... which is why i do not place benches/seats in my malls ... actually browsers are not welcome ... and definitely not loiterers ... i don't want ah peks sleeping on my benches enjoying aircon like they do at NLB ... ppl who goto my malls are supposed to spend spend spend ! then go home ! look at my beautiful costume jewelry shops & watch shop cxtxchain ... do buy something ! but if u sinkees can't afford, the india & russian tycoons surely will ... my sr civil servants also will ... once again i warn u lesser mortals - don't loiter !!

For some reason, Shaw Centre for decades always had low volume of customers where the small shops at various levels are concerned. You can stand there for 10 minutes and you will not see a soul.

On each floor there are segregated washrooms, executive & non-executive

Years ago the elevator used to open onto a board room on one of the floors :p Must remember that the building is owned by Shaw and many of the offices occupied by that organisation.

Have to admire Mr. Run Run Shaw, the organisation has 'old' employees that would not be able to work elsewhere because of age but still remained employed by the Shaw organisation. Some of these 'old' employees were invited to join the Shaw organisation. Shaw does have a philantropic reputation.

Very popular location for Amercian companies because its near to the American Club. The yankees can go have some lunch or to the gym at the Club.

Thanks for that Bro. I too heard about the Shaw's treatment of staff. I suspect they probably wanted a quiet and peaceful environment for tenants and not rent crazy like the GLCs.

Wow! Just did some late shopping at Isetan Orchard (Lido) and was walking around Shaw Center and saw that more than half of the units there are empty. In fact 70% of Shaw center shop units are empty
Also, heard most major shopping centers are half empty. Where are the CNY shoppers?
Anyone know of any other Singapore shopping centers that resemble ghost towns?

Shaw Center is not really a shopping center but a hybrid of offices and shops... and with large shopping malls like ngee ann city nearby.. SC lost its remaining lustre....

How many here remember the amusement parks; Great World, New World? These parks were/are owned by Shaw. For years they didn't redevelop until quite recently.

The female toilet's cubicles are very narrow. I'm usually one of the thinnest in the toilet and even I have problems getting out. I see so many ladies get stuck while trying to walk out! OMG! The building is old that's why!

Try Jurong Point. You will hate the crowd there. You will find very long queues at the food outlets, especially at JP 2. I checked out the John Little's there, thinking it would be like their Specialist Center outlet. It was like a pasar malam, so crowded.

Have you seen Tampines Mall lately? You cant walk fast even if you are in a hurry. The crowd move at snail pace you will feel very frustrated and you cant walk past them (not easily) because it's to crowded.

What about Causeway Point? Definitely more crowded than Wisma Atria or Shaw Center.

Suntec City is still doing good, that's what I saw the last time was there about a month ago. Maybe it was Xmas Season...

Last week I was at Far East Plaza. It was too crowded. But lots of delicious babes.Anyway, Shaw Center is not really much of a retail centre.

It is quite disheartening that you Singaporeanese are all about appearances, criticize others in the same aspect, and spend lots on the same aspect as well.

I was surprised when my angmo friend a PHD told me that sociologists world wide keep a close eye on Spore. It is as close to a test tube as you will get ie.controlled environment

Well I think he has tried his best. The British (who are a polite, reasonable and intellectual people) before him tried too to tame the barbarians, but with very limited success.

With some exceptions (I should believe you are included), most Singaporeanese I notice on the streets (as well as in other social settings), are rude (very much so), critical (on others rather than themselves), cynical and barbaric people (their habits as described by your compatriots explains it all) who believe they are smarter than others and have the right to stare and talk down on others when blatantly they are one big terrible joke when you look at their appearances (I mean what they look like, before you go any deeper into their character and intelligence and if this is not too much to ask, wisdom, but these are frankly, not really necessary).

So barbarians for the most part, are so and can't be tamed even by people of higher civility and education, I'm afraid.

But sure, your country may be a bit, strict all in all, but it's not a totally bad thing. The social sphere is not as degenerate and hippie like in Western countries. With more liberty, comes other aspects that are negative. It's all about what you want.

And if your country is so bad then even the Japanese and Caucasians (I do not refer to expatriates who have high-flying jobs and get to live in big houses here but rather, those who hail from middle-class income groups who live in flats) would not be keen at all.
