Serie A wrap: Juve rout Fiorentina, Milan edge Parma

18 March 2012

12427354660.jpg

Juventus and AC Milan continued their battle for the Serie A title on Saturday with both sides claiming comfortable wins.Second placed Juventus, who trail Milan by four points, dismantled 10-man Fiorentina 5-0 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi to break a run of four consecutive draws. Mirko Vucinic opened the scoring just after a quarter of an hour, but the real turning point in the match was the dismissal of Alessio Cerci, who saw red for a petulant kick on Martin Caceres after 21 minutes.

The hosts never recovered from the numerical disadvantage, and further goals from Artuo Vidal, Claudio Marchisio, Andrea Pirlo and Simone Padoin rounded off the emphatic win for Antonio Conte's men, who ensured the gap between to the top retured to four points after Milan's earlier win over Parma.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic again provided ample inspiration for his side at the Stadio Ennio Tardini, scoring a penalty in the first half to put Milan in the driving seat, before Urby Emanuelson wrapped up the spoils just before the hour mark.

It was the hosts who looked most dangerous in the early stages, with Parma having several good chances early in the match.
But they fell behind on 17 minutes when Ibrahimovic scored from the spot after Cristian Zaccardo had blocked Emanuelson's shot with his hand.Dutchman Emanuelson made sure of the points 10 minutes after half-time, thundering through the hosts' back line, before coolly rounding Antonio Mirante and poking the ball into an empty net.

"The club will therefore support them in any potential legal action taken to protect their image and integrity."

Juventus set to make sensational summer move to sign Chelsea misfit Torres

The Bianconeri are keen to add some fresh blood to their attack this summer, and are looking into the possibilities of luring the Spaniard to Turin

Mar 20, 2012 9:00:00 AM

174362hp2.jpg

By Romeo Agresti

Serie A giants Juventus are hopeful of luring Chelsea striker Fernando Torres to Turin in the summer transfer window.

The Bianconeri are looking to add a high-profile name to their attack ahead of the 2012-13 campaign, and have previously been linked with Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain. However, the 28-year-old Torres is Juve's primary target.

Sporting director Fabio Paratici has already contacted Margarita Garay, the player's former agent and still a member of his entourage, to discuss a potential summer move.

Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011 for a fee of €58.5 million, but the striker has never really been able to live up to the high expectations at Stamford Bridge.

Therefore, the Premier League side could opt to offload the former Atletico Madrid star this summer if he fails to find top form in the remainder of the 2011-12 campaign, and Juventus are keen to lure him to Serie A.

General director Giuseppe Marotta wants to see whether Torres has what it takes to succeed in the Italian top flight before signing him on a permanent basis though, and therefore wants to sign the attacker on a one-year loan deal, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of his initial spell.

However, the Spain international ended a 25-hour goalscoring drought at the weekend in Chelsea's 5-2 FA Cup win over Leicester City, and the Blues are unlikely to sell Torres this summer if he returns to top form in the remaining two months of the season.

Japanese in Europe: Kagawa does it again, while Uchida shows good form in defence

Kagawa's birthday goal was one of few highlights for Japanese players in Europe this weekend, several of whom watched their teams from the bench

Mar 19, 2012 2:30:00 AM

By Gyo Araiwa & Dan Orlowitz

173811hp2.jpg

In Germany‚ birthday boy Shinji Kagawa didn't take long to get the celebrations going in Borussia Dortmund's home 1-0 win against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

The Japanese attacker headed home an easy ball provided by Ilkay Gundogan in the eighth minute which proved to be the winner in a dominating display by the champions.

Kagawa had a good attempt turned onto the post by Bremen's goalkeeper in the 24th minute and hit wide further promising opportunities shortly after the break‚ and wasn't able to add another goal. With the narrow win‚ BVB have remained unbeaten for 20 games - a feat they have achieved for the first time in the club's history.

STAR OF THE WEEKEND
Shinji Kagawa
173935_hp.jpg

Let's look past the birthday goal and consider the stats: with three more goals, Kagawa will eclipse former Frankfurt player Naohiro Takahara as the top Japanese goal-scorer in a major European league's season.

<tbody>
</tbody>

In Sunday afternoon's match‚ Atsuto Uchida had a fine game as Schalke came from behind to beat bottom club Kaiserslautern 4-1.

Solid at the back‚ the 23-year-old showed some neat link-up play with Jefferson Farfan allowing him to launch into his trademark overlapping runs a couple of times‚ one of which he nearly concluded with an assist.

Following the midweek Europa League win against FC Twente‚ the right-back has gained form through his recent run in the first team and will give Knappen boss Huub Stevens food for thought when Germany international Benedikt Howedes returns to contention for a starting spot.

Italy

Yuto Nagatomo (Inter): Made a full appearance in his club's scoreless draw against Atalanta. Turned in a solid if unremarkable performance‚ failing to contribute much in the way of attack.

Takayuki Morimoto (Novara): Featured on bench as his club defeated Siena 2-0 away from home.

Germany

Gotoku Sakai (Stuttgart): Made a full appearance in his club's 2-1 win at Hoffenheim. In his sixth full match‚ the former Albirex player put on a solid performance on the Swabians' left side. The 20-year-old also showed good movements pushing forward‚ but was not involved in his team's goals.

Shinji Okazaki (Stuttgart): Not included as Stuttgart defeated Hoffenheim 2-1 away from home. The attacker sustained an injury in training during the week and is likely to be out of match action for another two to three weeks.

Makoto Hasebe (Wolfsburg): Played a full 90 minutes in his team's 3-1 win at Nurnberg. The Samurai Blue skipper was again fielded at right-back where he had a solid game‚ allowing him also to go forward and put in crosses. The 28-year-old had a hand in the Wolves' third in the 53rd minute as his throw-in eventually led to the goal.

Hajime Hosogai (Augsburg): Played a full 90 minutes as his club defeated Mainz 2-1 at home. The 25-year-old again did a good job taking control of Augsburg's central midfield and prevented the visitors from creating opportunities.

Yuki Otsu (Borussia Monchengladbach): Didn't feature in his team's roster in the 2-1 win at Leverkusen.

Takashi Usami (Bayern Munich): Remained on the bench in Bayern's 6-0 win at Hertha Berlin.

Takashi Inui (Bochum): Made a full appearance in his club's 2-1 loss at Duisburg. The former Cerezo man had a mixed afternoon as he was able to open the scoring in the 19th minute after receiving a fine pass by Mimoun Azaouagh‚ but the struggling home team went on to turn the match around.

England

Ryo Miyaichi (Bolton): Bolton's FA Cup fixture at Tottenham was abandoned in the first half when Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the field and was taken to a local hospital.

Lee Tadanari (Southampton): Left off the roster to recover from a knock as his club defeated Millwall 3-2 away from home.

Netherlands

Maya Yoshida (VVV Venlo): Was left off the line-up to serve a one-game suspension as his club was beaten 2-0 at home by NEC.

Robert Cullen (VVV Venlo): Made a full appearance in the 2-0 home loss against NEC.

Michihiro Yasuda (Vitesse): Played a full 90 minutes as Vitesse defeated Heracles 2-0 at home.

Mike Havenaar (Vitesse): Was an unused substitute in the 2-0 home win over Heracles.

Yoshiaki Takagi (Utrecht): Came on in the 90th minute in Utrecht's 3-0 home win against Groningen.

France

Daisuke Matsui (Dijon): Didn't feature in the matchday squad in the 2-1 win at Marseille.

Belgium

Eiji Kawashima (Lierse): Made a full appearance in the 1-1 draw against Mons.

Russia

Keisuke Honda (CSKA Moscow): CSKA will play against Spartak in Tuesday night's Moscow derby.

Romania

Takayuki Seto (Astra Ploiesti): Played a full 90 minutes in the Black Devils' 2-1 loss at Steaua Bucharest.

Revealed: Juventus offer €19,000-a-week five-year deal in bid to trump Manchester United in Pogba tug-of-war

The French midfielder is weighing up his playing future after reaching an outline agreement with the Bianconeri's general director Giuseppe Marotta three weeks ago

By Salvatore Landolina & Wayne Veysey

Paul Pogba celebrated his 19th birthday last Thursday uncertain where he will play his football next season but safe in the knowledge that he is at the centre of a tug-of-war involving current and would-be employers, Manchester United and Juventus.

United have made moves to convince Pogba that his future lies at Old Trafford and prevent him from making a summer switch to Serie A by re-opening contract negotiations and giving the midfielder some first-team action.

Goaldotcom can reveal for the first time the details of the offer that the Frenchman has personally received from Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta.

It includes a five-year contract initially worth €500,000-a-year (£418,000-a-year) for each of the first two years, but with a clause that if he breaks into the first team his salary will rise to €1 million (£835,000) per annum, or €19,000-a-week (£16,000).

Sources in Italy have told Goal.com that Juventus have mapped out their specific plan for Pogba, which would involve him starting off with the youth side and then being promoted to the first team if his progress satisfies the coaching staff.

It can also be revealed that Juve will include the provision for Pogba to go out on loan to a Serie B club to further his development if this is requested by coach Antonio Conte and youth-team boss Marco Baroni.

Pogba and his representatives came to an outline agreement with Marotta over a deal starting in the summer, when his United contract expires, pending a decision from the Premier League champions.

Although Juventus were on the verge of closing a deal at the start of this month, it was not advanced to the point where the player signed a pre-contract, which he is now entitled to do with a club on the continent under Fifa transfer rules.

Should Pogba move abroad, United would not receive a transfer fee, although they would be due a nominal sum to cover ‘training compensation’ under Fifa regulations. A move within England would require a fee to be set by an independent tribunal.

There is a growing sense at Juventus that Pogba’s camp, which is headed by super agent Mino Raiola, could be using the offer on the table from the Italian giants as leverage to get a better deal from United and fast-track his progress into the first team set-up.

"The boy is still trying to make his mind up, but he knows where he should be and he has shown the potential he has got. He is a first-team player, there is no question about that"
- Sir Alex Ferguson

United are keen to convince the France Under-19 international, who joined the club from Le Havre in 2009, that his future is best served at Old Trafford and senior officials including Sir Alex Ferguson are trying to persuade the player to turn his back on the Juventus deal.

With his future in the balance, it is perhaps no coincidence that Pogba has made cameo substitute appearances in each of United’s last three matches – against West Brom, Athletic Bilbao and Wolves. Up to that point, his first-team playing time outside of the League Cup had amounted to 17 minutes against Stoke City on the final day of the January transfer window.

Speaking after United’s Premier League win over West Brom 10 days ago, Ferguson admitted that Pogba had yet to decide whether to stick or twist.

“The boy is still trying to make his mind up, but he knows where he should be and he has shown the potential he has got,” said the United manager. “He is a first-team player, there is no question about that.”

Ferguson is loathe to lose a young central midfielder who he rates so highly and who had initially been earmarked for the first team in 2012-13 so soon after reluctantly allowing Ravel Morrison to join West Ham.

The Scot has been outspoken about the influence of Pogba’s representatives, who he accused earlier this year of chasing the best cash offer for their client.

He said: “Matt Busby summed it up perfectly, that you don't need to chase money at a club like Manchester United, it will eventually find you. If you're good enough, you will earn money and become rich playing for us, there's no doubt about it.”

Serie A wrap: ´Ibra´ shines for Milan

25 March 2012

12427358950.jpg

AC Milan took an important step towards retaining their Serie A crown, coming from a goal down to beat Roma 2-1 on Saturday.Zlatan Ibrahimovic's second-half brace cancelled out Pablo Osvaldo's strike just before the interval as Milan recovered to maintain their seven-point gap over Juventus.

The victory though came at a cost with defender Thiago Silva forced off inside 10 minutes after struggling through the warm-up.
The Brazilian joins Alexandre Pato, Robinho and Mark van Bommel on the sidelines ahead of Milan's crunch Champions League quarter-final first leg against holders Barcelona on Tuesday.

Osvaldo poked home Daniel De Rossi's deflected shot from four yards to give Roma a shock lead a minute before half-time but Ibrahimovic restored parity from the spot following a hand ball byDe Rossi.
Milan continued to press forward, but were repeatedly frustrated in their search for a winner.

Sulley Muntari struck the bar with a powerful finish, but it was Ibrahimovic who capped off Milan's fine comeack in the 83rd minute.
The Swede latched on to a long ball and audaciously lifted the ball over former Ajax team-mate Martin Stekelenburg before heading into an open net seven minutes from time.

Udinese received a boost in their bid for the last qualifying Champions League spot, moving up to third with Gabriel Torje's late strike earning a 1-1 draw with Palermo.
Fabrizio Miccoli's drive gave the Sicilian side the advantage on 31 minutes as they looked to avenged last season's 7-0 hammering at home to Udinese.

However, their players were left furious when Josip Ilicic was booked for simulation when his shirt was tugged in the box 10 minutes from time.
The resulting penalty could have given Palermo a vital two-goal cushion and the decision soon came back to bite them with substitute Torje netting his second goal of the season after taking advantage of Andrea Mantovani's error four minutes later.

The point moves Udinese ahead of Lazio (48 points) on goal difference ahead of their game in hand at home to Cagliari on Sunday while fifth-placed Napoli (47) host Catania.

Serie A wrap: Napoli stumble late, Lazio break losing streak

26 March 2012

12427359380.jpg

Napoli lost ground on third-placed Lazio after relinquishing a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at home to Catania in the Serie A on Sunday.Walter Mazzarri's men led 2-0 - thanks to Blerim Dzemaili and Edinson Cavani - with a quarter of an hour to play at Stadio San Paolo. But they conceded two late goals against Catania, who extended their unbeaten run to seven matches as Nicolas Spolli and Davide Lanzafame got on the scoresheet.

With Napoli looking for three points to potentially take them into third, it was no surprise they took a 60th-minute lead through Dzemaili.
A loose ball on the edge of the area fell to Dzemaili, and the Switzerland international blasted a first-time shot into the top corner.Vincenzo Montella's side pushed for an equaliser and left themselves open on the counter-attack, with Napoli taking full advantage in the 68th minute.

A through ball from Goran Pandev played Cavani through, and the Uruguayan netted after his initial strike hit the post.
The visitors, however, pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining.A corner found Spolli unmarked in the area, and the Argentine defender headed home to give Catania a glimmer of hope. They would secure an unlikely point when substitute Lanzafame poked in after a scramble from another corner.

It meant Lazio extended their advantage in third spot to three points after their 1-0 win at home to Cagliari.
Mobido Diakite's 88th-minute header gave Edy Reja's side a deserved victory at Stadio Olimpico. In other matches, Genoa secured a late 2-2 draw at home to Fiorentina.Delio Rossi's Fiorentina side led when Cesare Natali netted on 69 minutes, after Fernando Belluschi and Riccardo Montolivo had traded goals in the first half.

But the visitors were denied all three points when Argentine forward Rodrigo Palacio struck in the 89th minute.
Elsewhere, Mattia Destro cancelled out Francesco Acerbi's ninth-minute goal to help Siena to a 1-1 draw at Chievo.Parma came from behind to draw 2-2 against fellow strugglers Cesena, while Novara and Lecce played out a 0-0 draw in a result that suited neither relegation-threatened side.

Luciano Moggi: Inter offered me a contract before Calciopoli

The former Bianconeri chief has insisted that he had the chance to work at the San Siro outfit before the football scandal and dared Moratti to look at the contract he still owns

Ahead of tonight's Derby d'Italia in Turin, former Juventus director Luciano Moggi has repeated the claim that he was offered a position at Inter prior to the Calciopoli scandal.

The 74-year-old has said on numerous occasions that Inter president Massimo Moratti presented him with the chance to become the club's general manager before Calciopoli erupted in 2006, allegations which the Nerazzurri supremo has always denied.

"Moratti said he never thought about me as a director for Inter?," pondered Moggi to Il Giorno.

"He talks through the media, if he feels the need to say so, I will invite him to meet me and I will ask him if he can recognise his signature from the three-year contract."

Inter won five consecutive Scudetti from 2006 to 2010 (the first of these awarded through the courts after Juventus were stripped of two titles and relegated), but have struggled this season and lie in seventh position in the Serie A table.

Prior to that successful period the Nerazzurri had not won the league since 1989, and Moggi has blamed the title drought on the club's raw material.

"They did not win because they bought bad players," Moggi blasted.

Juventus and Inter have become bitter enemies since the scandal, with Bianconeri fans and Moggi adamant that there was a conspiracy against the club. The two sides meet in Turin tonight, with rumours rife that Juve Ultras will continue their Calciopoli protests via their stadium choreography.

Inter sack Ranieri and appoint Stramaccioni as coach

The Nerazzurri announced that they have fired the former Chelsea trainer after the 2-0 loss to Juventus and assigned the Primavera boss in his place

Mar 26, 2012 9:08:00 PM

By Luis Mira

175647hp2.jpg

Inter have announced via their official website that they have parted company with coach Claudio Ranieri.

The 60-year-old boss had been under intense pressure after a series of negative results left the club languishing in eighth place in the Serie A table, 10 points shy of the Champions League qualification places.

Earlier on Monday, president Massimo Moratti gave Ranieri a vote of confidence, but the Italian coach fell victim to Sunday's 2-0 Derby d'Italia defeat to Juventus, which was Inter's eighth loss since the start of the calendar year.

He will be replaced by youth team boss Andrea Stramaccioni, who recently led the Primavera side to the NextGen Series title by overcoming Ajax in the final on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

"President Moratti and all of Inter would like to thank Claudio Ranieri and his staff for the professionalism and the commitment shown in these months," read a statement from the club.

"Inter would also like to announce that it has entrusted the team to Primavera coach Andrea Stramaccioni, who won the first edition of the Next Generation Series."

Ranieri arrived at San Siro in September following the sacking of Gian Piero Gasperini and oversaw the team's recovery in form as the Nerazzurri moved from a shocking 17th place to the European qualification zone.

However, a nine-game winless streak raised doubts over his future as Inter risk not competing in Europe next season, while they are already out of the Champions League after losing to Olympique de Marseille after a 2-2 aggregate on the away goal rule.

It is believed that Stramaccioni will guide Inter until the end of the season as the club seek to ensure a seamless transition to a new coaching staff, which reports suggest will be led by former Chelsea trainer Andre Villas-Boas.

Napoli's Walter Mazzarri and Udinese's Francesco Guidolin have also been linked with Inter's hot seat in recent weeks, but both coaches have distanced themselves from the reports.

WAG of the weekend: Alena Seredova

Gigi Buffon's wife secures the highest accolade Extra Time can award, in celebration of Juventus' vital 2-0 win over Inter Milan on Sunday evening

Mar 26, 2012 10:20:00 AM

175514hp2.jpg

It's the award the world has been waiting for; the WAG of the weekend!

The 159th Derby d'Italia was settled on Sunday evening and the victorious Juventus team could point towards their goalkeeper for keeping them level in a trying first half against Inter Milan.

Gianluigi Buffon was stationed between the sticks and showed the sort of form that has seen him recognised over the years as one of the world's finest goalkeepers.

175516hp2.jpg

But what of his personal life? Who looks after Gigi when he's not performing for the Bianconeri? Alena Seredova apparently.

Her resume is impressive - Seredova is a former runner-up for Miss Czech Republic and represented her country in Miss World the same year, finishing in fourth place.

Her modelling career has also seen her feature on the cover of Penthouse Europe, Playboy Europe, Spy, Extreme and Quo. Ahem.

She also owns an Italian clothing line called Baci e Abbracci, which I believe translates to 'Kisses and Hugs'.

Inter president Massimo Moratti has blamed former coach Gian Piero Gasperini for the club's troubles this season.

The Nerazzurri slipped to eighth in Serie A over the weekend, 10 points outside the Champions League qualifying places, prompting Moratti to remove current boss Claudio Ranieri from his position and put Primavera boss Andrea Stramaccioni in charge on a temporary basis until the end of the current campaign.

The Inter chief has copped a lot of flak over the past few days for the way in which he is running the club but he feels that Gasperini, who was sacked last September, is to blame for their current predicament.

"I am not at all satisfied with what Gasperini did," Moratti told Sky Sport24. "The responsibility for this underwhelming season lies mostly with him."

Moratti admitted that he is now hoping that Stramaccioni can inspire a rapid improvement in the first team's fortunes - despite having no previous top-flight coaching experience.

"Stramaccioni has talent and is very good from a tactical perspective, so anything could happen," he opined.

"I hope that actually he could be a solution for the future. If he wins all his games, I could hold on to him.

"In terms of European qualification, I hope we can do it but I don't believe we can and the failure to qualify would be a big problem for us.

"His arrival is a good thing, at least we awake in the morning with a fresh atmosphere [around the club]."

However, Moratti then appeared to undermine his new coach but confessing his admiration for a number of men who have been linked with a summer switch to San Siro.

"[Athletic Bilbao's Marcelo] Bielsa is a great coach, like [Catania's Vincenzo] Montella and [Pescara's Zdenek] Zeman," he mused. "But I speak well of a lot of coaches.

Then turning his attention to the playing staff, Moratti conceded that injury-prone striker Diego Forlan has not proven an adequate replacement for Samuel Eto'o, who was sold to Anzhi Makhachkala last summer.

"Forlan has played only a little, but badly," the Inter president said of a forward who cost the Nerazzurri a reported €5 million.

Stramaccioni's first game at the helm comes against Genoa at the Giuseppe Meazza this weekend.
