Rohingya.jpg
It is tragedy that the Government has turned away 40 people picked up by a ship off the coast of Myanmar who, from media reports, are Muslim Rohingya. They were seeking refuge in Singapore.

The refugees are fleeing persecution in their own country, a situation which observers warn could lead to a genocide campaign.

They have been denied recognition of their citizenship, prevented from procreating, and experienced censorship of their historical roots in their country.

Through the years, many of the victims have fled their homeland out of fear and desperation. The 40 whom were on board the vessel turned away by the Government were reported to be fleeing the violence. They were reported to have been adrift at sea for 30 hours before they were rescued by a ship and brought to Singapore.

It was wrong to turn them away as they were in need of food and medical help. The right thing to do would be to afford them temporary shelter and to ensure their physical safety. The persons can then be repatriated at a later time.

Singaporeans are a compassionate people and the Government representing us should not be cold and cruel, one that calculates everything in material terms.

The PAP can also hardly claim that the turning away of these helpless victims of war is based on national security reasons. It is already knee deep in its policy of indiscriminately bringing in millions of foreigners, a policy that gravely threatens national security in Singapore. Providing temporary shelter for 40 refugees hardly compares.[/TD]

Did we use to treat people better?

http://remembersingapore.wordpress.com/2011/07/01/vietnamese-boat-people-in-singapore/

I just think Singaporeans are a pretty selfish and heartless bunch of people. This selfishness is why I despair of Singapore ever growing more like Scandinavia (it obviously requires a lot of give and take of material things, but my point is - material things are not the only things that matter in life - why grudge people material things when we are already so wealthy? Oh oops - I forgot - maybe it's because most of the wealth is in the hands of the elite and not ordinary Singaporeans - maybe that's why we're so selfish about material wealth).

In fact, I won't be surprised at all if more people end up protesting a "cute" cause like the RWS dolphins than for dying humans. Who cares about humans, we have 7 billion of them and counting already, don't we.

On one hand I think I do feel ashamed that Singapore is a little heartless towards them. On the other hand, why do they die die have to go Singapore and not elsewhere? Isn't Indonesia complaining that some of their provinces are underpopulated, why don't they go there instead? Send them to Irian Jaya, send them to Kalimantan, why purposely want to squeeze into our crowded little red dot?

We already have 1.5 million ' invaders'. I rather have refugees that are grateful to the locals than the 1.5 million invaders dictating to locals who build this country.

Speak for yourself. The 1.5 million invaders are economically useful to use (except for some losers who whine here all the time). The refugees who will be a burden to our society we really don't need.

I agree that they'll be difficult to integrate - in terms of language, culture, etc. Not accepting them as citizens isn't the same as not providing them with relief for a short period of time.

In the worst case, getting them healed and provisioned over a couple of months and in the worst case if no country wants to accept them, giving them boats to seek their fortune again would be better than just pushing them away. And not that costly too.

Sucks to be them, I guess. If bad luck ever happens to me, sucks to be me. And if bad luck happens to you, sucks to be you too. Don't expect help from anyone (unless you happen to be useful to them).

What a wonderful world.

Nice to be seeing you in this forum, certainly a welcome by many in this cruel world.

I am sure many will be comforted and warmly appreciate the flame of humanity you bring too.

If only more are willing to help halt the inhumane and entrenched mindset of ruthless economic profit motive alone regardless of human suffering of OTHERS, the world will certainly benefit much in the spirit of goodwill.

.. What a wonderful world.

YEAH,,with SDP policies, foreigners will get even more rights than singaporeans, single moms will be encouraged, and the country will be made worse,,,

SDP is nothing but a left wing liberal platform that will make it worse for singaporeans,,such policies have fucked up the west,,now CSJ wants to bring this shit over,,,just look at how Vincent speaks up for migrant workers,,,they can cheat the system and yet SDP will still back them up,,,,

Yes I agree,,,refugees are a drain to the host country,,however they can be economic benefits if they are the educated class,,,like after the Viet war,,most of those that left were the highly educated whom the commies will go after,,,but in general many of the current refugees are just economic migrants,,they really screwed up Oz land big time,,they even get more benefits than locals as they have priority housing, free driving licence etc,,,

if life too hard for them,,they can choose to end it,,dont have to make their host country suffer,,a country and nation is for its own citizens, not foreigners,,

the facts speak for itself,,none of those liberal bullshit crap

Thanks for the vote of confidence - and it's a mutual feeling too, to know there're people who think similarly to myself. :)

What I said was just sarcastic rhetoric - I know nobody (even cass888) is completely unkind. It's just, how kind we are, to who, under what circumstances, etc.

It's ironic I was just scanning Youtube videos for my research into politicians' speeches and found PAP folks talking about kindness. This is what we have reduced "kindness" to - little civic and neighbourly acts within a community. And we (or at least MP Fatimah Lateef) have to use words like recalcitrant - in a "Kindness" Conference?! Quite hypocritical, really. If the contents of this conference are a reflection of the kindness Singapore/Singaporeans have to offer... I must say we are a very unkind nation. (And it's not surprising we have no more to offer - because we suspect the worst of people, we think people will consume free healthcare irresponsibly, we think people would rather live on welfare than work, we think people commit crimes unless they're heavily deterred, e.g. by capital punishment etc)

Really not... marriage rates are way down in Scandinavia but TFR is up to 1.8+ (and they're way more open about homosexuality), while Singapore TFR is 1.17! (Not that marriage rates are going up here.) The "West" isn't as bad as you think it is. My American room-mate in Denmark fell down icey stairs and broke his nose - cost of medical care was all borne by the state (maybe it's good karma, he's vegan surfer dude with a Soviet flag in the room)! And he was just an exchange student over there for six months. Singapore will never be so generous. We don't even offer such healthcare for locals.

You know, since you like to exploit migrant workers (and probably Filipino maids), maybe you should think of a way to exploit these refugees rather than send them away. Maybe they can be "useful" to you after all!

I'm curious though - how do you feel being exploited by the rich and powerful in Singapore? You're happy with your lot in life?

viet refugees are exceptional. many of them who floated to hk and south east asian countries after the war and commie occupation of south vietnam eventually emigrated to 1st world countries and contributed positively in terms of setting up small businesses, providing affordable and competitive labor and skills, working in important professions, buying up real estate, and remaining relatively mute and law-abiding. the moment they get on their feet and fend for themselves, they wean themselves out of refugee assistance and welfare. they find it shameful to rely on gov assistance and would rather be given freedom to start a living for themselves. those refugees were mainly of ethnic chinese stock. native viets without ethnic chinese connections fare badly and are not driven to succeed. many remain on public and gov assistance. and the men gamble away welfare money. two casinos now on brokaw road in san jose, and majority of gamblers are viet men of mostly native viet stock. meanwhile, the ethnic chinese viets are opening supermarket chains, restaurants, hair salons, and delving into property development. sg had vast opportunities to host large groups of these "boat people", but only took in a token number and incarcerated them near nee soon camp in sembawang. imo, they could have taken in more instead of sending their boats away in the open sea. goodwill lost, and many of the survivors and their children will never forget how heartless and cruel sinkies and malaysians were in their moment of life and death. for those who stayed in nee soon internment, their attitude towards sg was better, but not bright. most are now in 1st world countries, and their children are very well educated, successful and gradually getting more active politically. once the next gen become business and political leaders, they will look back and ensure that south east asian countries which had abandoned them will get abandoned in return.

I will concede to you on this argument. Framed this way, and with the benefit of hindsight, we should have taken in the Vietnamese. Or at least conducted the interview on a patrol boat and take in those who could potentially be valuable to us.

Speak for yourself. The 1.5 million invaders are economically useful to use.

They certainly aren't very useful to me. And by the way, it is 4 million economic refugees which is twice the native voting population of Singapore, not 1.5 million.
