Sad day for Singapore

Some forummers here are rejoicing because the very humble but capable Ho Ching has resigned from billion dollar Temasek.

It appears that they prefer a foreign ang moh to earn the million dollar salary rather than a local Singaporean who put their blood sweat and tears in building up a billion dollar empire.

Yet at the very same breathe these people condemn the gahment for giving jobs to a foreigner. These people would rather surrender to an ang moh than to see a local person rise to the top. They prefer to be slave to foreigner than to work hard for a local boss. Singapore will have no future with these people. It is a sad day indeed.

Issn't it true that govt is still behaving the same way by giving job to foreigner by appointing another foreigner to replace Ho Jinx? It proves Singaporeans concern right.

You either can't read or don't know what is happenning. People are celeberating Ho Ching's exit for obvious reasons ranging from conflict of interest to investment debacles but no one is celeberating Goodyear's appointment. There are 2 different issues. Life cannot be as simple as that.

It shows the failure of the scholarship system where talent is recognised and nutured early. No other country has invested so much and got little in returns. So bad is the performance that a country's sovereign fund is in the hands of a foreigner. After 35 years of investment, not one tree has borne fruit.

Not many people are aware that the Civil Service has placed its talents in the private sector including MNCs to carry out work just like any other employer and these are done for longer than one year. Yet no results.

Goodyear walked away between $60 to $100Million fron BHP. His base pay will be $3M without even performance pay kicking in.

I also feel sad that Madam Ho Ching tendered in her resignation. Temasek has grown to what it is largely from her
contributions as CEO. She has proven that she is a capable and global talent. Otherwise why is Madam Ho rated by
Forbes as the 4th most powerful woman in the world.

Her appointment as CEO of Temasek was based on her capability and not because she is LKY's daughter-in-law.

As a person of integrity she has resigned her position because of late there has been a lot criticism about her role in
Temasek because she's the PM's wife and daughter-in-law of LKY.

It's a great loss not only for Temasek, but for Singapore!

Ya,loud and clear,we got the msg fr PAP.

I am personally looking forward to the day when real talented FTs take over the posts of PM,MM,SM,and all mininisterial posts.

Dont be anti-FTs<I warn you.

The fact is that almost 99.99% Singapore citizens want real FTs,u are the idiot whose thinking is totally outside down.

Is there any hope for red dot w/o real FTs,the answer is ZERO!

Agreed with your observation. If our educational system and scholar scheme have been effective as touted by the Gov, we would not need to have external people to run our state-funded corporations. These scholars aren't supposed to be groomed to be in the helms? It's a total failure that there isn't any notable candidate that can fuel our imagination. In the States, the government can easily form a "star-studded" team.

My opinion is that these scholars aren't trained in the real-world enough to take up the huge responsibilities. It's a dog eat dog world out there, where it's totally different from the safe cocoon these guys are hidden, especially those SAF scholars who spent almost an entire of their career in a regimental environment. I seriously think that it's high time we revamp the scholarship scheme. At least when they start working, they need to prove their worth for promotion and not on the merit that they are scholars. Their career path should not be different from ordinary folks who join the same company.

Friend,it seems that u have no sense of figures, hehe.
Pl enrol for primary 1 maths class urgently.I doubt u can survive in this world

What is US$60b? It's only Madeoff!
Tony Tan reported that GIC was managing a fund of $450b and Temasek Holding managing a portfolio of $200b. These work out to be $650b. He also said that 7% was in cash and something like 30% in income paying investments.

And we have outperformed the market! The market valuation of stocks worldwide has fallen by 42%. Our portfolio only lost 40% of its value. Not bad after taking some precautionary measures to trim down our investments in stocks and shares.

So what is our paper loss to date. A 40% loss of $650n is $260n. But if we deduct the cash and other investment part, assuming 40%, then the sum invested in stocks and shares should be around $390b. A paper loss of 40% works out to be $156b. Still not a small sum of money. A little more than what Madoff has lost.

But this is based on the above data and extrapolation. The actual amount loss, on paper, may be lesser. How much did we really lose? The number must be unspeakable.

When it first began, I had a lot of hope and it seemed to be a no-brainer. Best of class identified early and nutured early. Surely they will do better than the 1st Gen Ministers aleast in policy if not in politics. I really don't know why it failed. What surprised me even more is the lack of entrepreneurial materials of significance.

My opinion is that these scholars aren't trained in the real-world enough to take up the huge responsibilities. It's a dog eat dog world out there, where it's totally different from the safe cocoon these guys are hidden, especially those SAF scholars who spent almost an entire of their career in a regimental environment.

They actually have placement programs with MNCs. I mean real jobs. Know a chap who worked for Standard Chartered Bank for nearly 20 mths doing what other staff do.

The SAF scholar program seems out of whack with the real world with none of them showing any real corporate mettle.

I seriously think that it's high time we revamp the scholarship scheme. At least when they start working, they need to prove their worth for promotion and not on the merit that they are scholars. Their career path should not be different from ordinary folks who join the same company.

Wholeheartly agree. After 35 years, it has to be revamped. Nothing spectacular has been achieved.

Your point about promotion on merit is relevant. My views on the scholars are these

1) usual 2 year postings does not allow sufficient depth and avoids accountability. It is common knowledge that "project of significance" that last 18mths are done with baked in expected results and you are rated on it. By the time the actual effects are known, one is probably is already in the 3rd posting.

2) A clear progression pathway assured by a set of remuneration will surely create a group that will attemp to avoid any form of risk that will curtail movement along this path.

3) The high bonuses for top performers has the wrong effect as avereage or poor performers will continue to stick to the given progression path.

4) Remove scholars from Political roles such as Unionism, People Association, SPH, etc.

5) Premised heavily on the fallacy that, without highly renumerated scholars, the civil service will collapse. Emprirical evidence from the 1st world shows otherwise.

6) nPremised on the fallacy that Singapore is an "Unlikely" country to survive unless special people are identified, given special treatment from cradle to grave to keep this country above water.

Conclusion

Its is clear to see that nothing spectacular or even iconic has been achieved from the scholar program.

You are deliberately misrepresenting the facts.

People are happy because there is no longer a humble and capable Ho Ching to make losses on their behalf.

The ang mo is a policy by the PAP leaders themselves.

As with all PAP policies, the PAP know best.

Its not a sad day when Ho Ching resigns. Its not a happy day when Goodyear is appointed. Its only becomes one of the most miserable sad episodes when you realise Temasek has been so politicised, that its decisions doesn't reflect business sensibility, but political indecision, and derision.

Temasek is full of politics, with ex-politicians and ex-civil servants- with politics and self interest in their minds- being part of the management since God knows when. And because of this, Temasek has gone way off tangent in its original priorities. And that's the saddest part of Temasek in the first place.

Hence the clever exit of Ho, Not because she agree that there's nepotism or conflict of interest.

If she is that noble, she will have rejected the post in the first place.

The last I heard, Merill Lynch lost $15b in the last quarter of 2008. UBS also lost a few billion. Citibank, which she bought $24 per share in 2007, lost $21 within a year.

What profit were you talking about?

Your post is a political minefield.

Deliberately provocative in the light of Mr Lui's reported statement?

First, let's take her presence in Temasek out of her personal relationship with the PM and the MM, the two MOST POWERFUL MEN in Singapore out of the equation.

Second, concentrate only on her value to Temasek and Singapore.

You purport to speak for Temasek.

Is Temasek flying the flag half-mast mourning the loss of their CEO?

You might also like to do a survey amongst Singaporeans.

Then you will get a true measure of her value as perceived by Singaporeans.

Baed on what criteria was ho chink chosen to head Temasek?
What were her previous jobs and education and what were her performances like?

Taking all the answers, do you truly think she deserved to be Temasek's head honcho?

If I carry out a survey here, 100% of anti-PAP, anti-gahment here would want the $460 billion dollars to be put into their pockets. Period.

I peasant don't speak for Temasek, but many peasants here speak as though they are the CEOs of Temasek. That's the difference, just in case you do not know.

< Otherwise why is Madam Ho rated by Forbes as the 4th most powerful woman in the world.?

Madam Ho is rated the 4th most powerful woman because of the money she has at her disposal. Money made not by her but from our taxes, reserves and CPF and the GLC.
