Is Tin Pei Ling a victim of ‘gutter journalism’?

Are netizens justified in digging into new PAP candidate Tin Pei Ling's personal life? (Yahoo! photo)

Some have termed it her baptism of fire, while others call it an online smear campaign.
Either way, personal photos of 27-year-old Tin Pei Ling have been hijacked from her Facebook page and published on websites, and questions have been raised about her marriage to a high-flying civil servant and her allegedly "extravagant lifestyle".
Tin has been at the centre of an online storm after she was unveiled on Monday as the People's Action Party's (PAP) youngest candidate since former Member of Parliament (MP) Ng Kah Ting was fielded in 1963 at the age of 23.
Tin, who is a senior associate at Ernst & Young Advisory, has been serving in the grassroots for seven years and is expected to contest in the MacPherson ward in the Marine Parade group representation constituency (GRC) in the coming General Election.
When contacted by Yahoo! Singapore, Tin declined to comment on the online postings, preferring to let the furore calm down.
But others have been quick to make their stand.
Former nominated MP Siew Kum Hong lamented the online frenzy in a post on his blog on Tuesday: "What has been happening on the Internet (especially Facebook) since (Tin was unveiled as a PAP candidate) has been nothing short of disgusting."
Pointing out that little is known about Tin's competence and suitability as an MP and her policy positions, Siew urged netizens to give Tin "a chance to show what she would be like as an MP, instead of digging up all this personal stuff".
"I find what has happened to be quite offensive and reprehensible," he wrote, adding that such "gutter journalism" would deter people, including him, from joining politics.
Some posters, however, felt such 'attacks' are to be expected in politics, and that the PAP had dealt with the opposition politicians in the same way.
One netizen, who goes by the moniker johntoh, posted on website The Temasek Review, "So all the extremely negative comments made about Tin here, is just purely a reflection of the way PAP goes about their "business" in destroying their opponents as well."
"Websites that say they want to help raise the level of Singapore's political discourse shouldn't go lower than the politicians themselves," wrote academic and journalist Cherian George on journalism.sg, urging netizens to exercise discretion.
George added, "The truth is that the political parties have been more civilized than they've been given credit for."
"Think back to the Workers' Party's calm under fire when attacked by the PAP over the so-called James Gomez affair. And consider the restraint that the PAP showed over the sensational revelations about one Opposition leader's penchant for photographing himself in the nude."
On people who have dismissed the possibility that someone so young could serve in Parliament, George said, "I recall feeling similarly skeptical when Eunice Olsen was put up as an NMP. She proved me wrong and I have learnt not to prejudge."
In an editorial, The Online Citizen also tried to draw netizens' focus to a discussion on PAP's election strategy by fielding Tin.
Private photos, making insinuations about Tin's marriage and private lifestyle choices are "not fair game" and "are irrelevant to whether or not you should vote for her", their writer said.

Of course not but it is alright if it's any opposition candidates.

1. TPL is a Senior Associate at Ernst & Young Advisory Pte Ltd.

TPL is not in a managerial position. Her job is to solicit business
for E&Y. After she gets an account, she transfers the client to other
E&Y departments to do the follow-up. She is like a pimp. She does not
manage other E&Y staff. If she cannot manage staff, how can she manage
grassroots leaders and residents?

2. TPL is married to Ng How Yue, 40, principal private secretary to
PM.

TPL dated NHY for 6 months before he proposed to her. TPL proudly
reenacted how NHY proposed to her in a video screened at her wedding. One
day, TPL found a photo of NHY with his ex-gf. She blew her top and tore the
photo. Feeling guilty, NHY immediately bought a huge diamond ring and
proposed to her.
Isn't that romantic? NHY was getting old and he needed to
marry quickly to prove he wasn't gay. He was 38 and she was 25 when they got
married. TPL has been spotted without her wedding ring and with other guys
many times. So much for being faithful.

3. TPL's motto: "Oops, I did it again".

TPL was very popular in NUS. She had the tendency to attract guys,
even when she had a bf. She changed bf many times. This is a clear
indication of her commitment and loyalty to people around her.

4. TPL is a camwhore.

TPL is an attention seeker. She loves being the centre of attraction,
hence further explaining point 3 above. Her purpose to becoming an MP is to
get national attention.

5. TPL is PAP's candidate for MacPherson in Marine Parade GRC.

Putting the youngest candidate in one of the oldest estates is
suicide. However, Marine Parade GRC is under SM. What does this say? Whether
or not got opposition contest the GRC, TPL will automatically become a MP,
because people will still vote for SM to return. Maybe PAP take her in to
prove that they are not perfect, and that they are willing to "give some
balls" to opposition to let them to win a larger percentage in Marine Parade
GRC? That way, it won't seem like PAP bully opposition.

A taste of their own medicine.
To those MPs commented, see what your party PAP have done to others before commenting.
KARMA!!!!

Old man can compare Chiam See Tong's and Mah Bow Tan's O level result in parliament ..... .... yet we can't talk about this candidate's background that is made public in the first place?

She should know very damn well that having her personal life scrutinized by the public is just part and parcel of being a public figure. Meanwhile, she should just get use to this while I sit back munch on my chips and await the unfolding of more juicy gossips about her! muahaha

Given her credentials, I highly doubt she understand the needs and woes of the typical man on the street..

PM: The truth about Chiam

"You know Dr Lee, he's an old performer. But, Mr Chiam, you don't know him. So I looked him up in the records just to make sure what bright star was going to fall into our firmament as against Mah Bow Tan.

Mah Bow Tan, age 16, took his 'O' levels - six distinctions, two credits. Mr Chiam, age 18 - 1953 I think - six credits, one pass. He passed his English language, not bad.

The next year, in 1954, he worked harder, he got a credit for his English. So you see, it's not because he doesn't know English that he found difficulty in expressing himself.

It's what's inside here (tapping his head). And you better search your inside here before you cast your votes. Goodbye and good luck."
