From what I heard, the CEC did react to strong feedback from its supporters and grassroots workers about negative sentiments on the ground. Hence the eleventh hour pullout. CSJ himself acknowledged the PR disaster.

But Ravi's report about threatened resignations, no-confidence vote, near-mayhem etc is largely fictitious, to be taken with a bucket of salt. Probably the ghost-written work of the PAP or WP IB.

OK, no confidence against Chee is hard to believe. Hard to believe that two motions of such enormous impact will be tabled at the same meeting.

What about the resignations? The earlier report in shin min about 45 people resigning from SDP. Did that happen?

In his articles on opposition unity, CSJ has never mentioned being #1 in an opposition alliance. In fact, in a recent SDP article (can't remember who wrote it) it was stated that if WP wanted to lead the alliance, it's okay with the SDP since WP is now the strongest opposition party.

Commonsense will tell you that a small party with no seats cannot helm an alliance when there are much larger parties (WP and NSP), one alliance (SDA), and one dominant party with 6+2 in parliament (WP).

CSJ might be politically inept, he might have an idealistic vision of where he wants to take Singapore, but he's not a megalomaniac.

Unless they can get more people like Dr Paul Tambyah. I looked at his Facebook for the first time yesterday and was quite amazed.

He puts up a link about SDP's contest. He puts up a link by a WP member welcoming multi-contests and says it's a good piece. He puts up a link about unified candidate and also says it's a good piece. He puts up a link from AYG welcoming SDP pulling out. Then he sends his wishes to LLL.

Despite his intelligence, he doesn't seem to have a political opinion. Or is he just a super-ultra nice guy.

Once such people join a party, they will stay put. The trick is for SDP to grab them first.

From the start Mr yellow gave the impression he has a line right into the party's inner circle (insisting that SDP will definitely contest), but yesterday he confirmed he isn't even a party member.

CSJ has quite a number of loyalists within the party ranks and the CEC. Intra-party dissent is minimal, though I expect it to rise after this debacle. A sudden switch is neither feasible nor desirable.

A deal could be struck: let CSJ, who's just been discharged from bankruptcy, lead the GE2016 team with the explicit understanding he and the old guard will step down after and hand over leadership to a new team in time for GE2021.

Succession planning as to who will replace whom should start now.

Minimum dislocation, maintains morale, win-win for all sides. CSJ gets his swansong attempt, the young capable chaps get to be groomed to take over.

Simple logic, if he did not have the backing of his party, they would have come out and stopped him even before he started issuing the letters, need not wait for the 15th hour EGM to whack him.

CSJ did a lot of crazy things in the past and if you track his work, he was not the only one doing it, the whole party and even his sister followed his crazy foot steps. In fact this gimmick he pulled is already damn mild.
