Caused by a car speeding through the lights , as if the car driver not only was innocent, but mandate of heaven on fucking justice, as if the man on cycle has/had no family or friends to grieve for him

Many of my jogger friends have taken up cycling. Their reason is that their knees cannot take the impact anymore. Cycling gives them the speed that they used to enjoy when they were fit and strong. They dressed like pro and probably that makes them feel good. At 52 ( should be mature enough) to dash across a junction at that speed is hard to understand. Any seasoned driver will know that pedestrian or cyclist dashing across junction is the hardest to look out for when turning because the focus is usually on the on-coming vehicles. Therefore, it takes 2 mistakes to happen simultaneously for such an accident. Maybe it is just fated.

The front wheels and the steering column would have cushioned the impact; if he was quick, he could have rolled over the taxi's bonnet, and his helmet could save him. His neck will definitely take a big hit and if it is not dislocated or broken, he will survive and learn his lesson.

A cyclist who gets run over will be in a much worse state.

Cyclist in critical state after being hit by taxi

The sister of avid cyclist Mr Wong Chee Hong told The Straits Times yesterday that he had taken his regular precautions before an accident which left him in a critical condition.

On Tuesday, the 52-year-old civil servant had been on his nightly cycle around his neighbourhood and was crossing a junction when a taxi making a right turn hit him.

Mr Wong was flung off his bike and the impact sent one of its wheels flying. Police were alerted to the 10pm accident at the junction of Upper Changi Road East and Somapah Road and Mr Wong was taken conscious to Changi General Hospital.

Mr Wong's sister, who declined to be named, told The Straits Times that her brother underwent surgery yesterday after suffering bleeding in his brain and a fractured thigh bone. He was still unconscious and in critical condition at press time.

Agreed. Although this cyclist is wrong, there is no reason for us to rejoice somebody death or serious injury just because he broke some traffic rules.

High time for campaign to safe cycling,especially at night, clearly,the injured cyclist had ignored all traffic rules and head on against red light. Perhaps picking up from how PRC and Indian cyclist behaves, total disregard for own safety and others.

Only the taxi dashcam footage,if available, should made known public.

I guess if injured were a motorcyclist, perhaps less sympathy here.

both the cyclist and taxi driver are at fault.

cyclist trying to beat the red light as can see from video he charged out after amber turn to red.

taxi driver concentrating on beating the right turn green arrow, the traffic lights right turn arrow flash immediately after the lights turn red.

i notice LTA purposely programmed many traffic lights this way which imho is bloody dangerous as proven by this accident. LTA should bear responiblity for this accident.

btw, if lky the cyclist, will echer still be offended by what others post.

personally, i think cyclist shd be more careful, i myself commute from hougang to shenton way(saturday only) many years back, it always me who give way to other road user irregardless who have the right of way as it will always be the cyclist be worse off in the event of an accident.

Cyclists are required to dismount when crossing the overhead bridge for the safety of pedestrians.

Similarly, they should dismount when crossing traffic junctions for the safety of themselves. It is even harder for a driver to spot this cyclist if he had been cycling from the other direction. Our traffic signally system isn't designed to accommodate cyclists whose speed is considerably much faster than a walking pedestrian.


When making the right turn, the driver's eyes will have limited scope of vision, a fast cyclist coming from his blind spot (if the cyclist had been from the other direction) will be difficult to spot. Even in this case, where the cyclist was coming from a easier to spot direction the driver wasn't able to stop in time, worse for mounted cyclists from the other direction.


Perhaps a law requiring cyclists to dismount and cross at traffic junctions, else the driver should have reduced liability in such cases. Or a law requring cyclists to use the lights that apply to cars and not the lights that apply to pedestrians. Afterall, a fast-moving cyclist on the pedestrian crossing isn't safe for pedestrians either.


Especially if there are small children, harder for cyclists to spot or predict their movements (if you have kids you know what i mean). Let's seriously do something about this. It's not about your rights or mine to use the road. It's about our lives. Both those who are injured/dead/unscathed will be badly affected by the accident. Their loved ones too....

saw a bunch of ang mo cycling in raffles place crossing to golden shoe car park, on bike dashing cross via pedestrian despite red light, a pity smrt cab did not smash into them.
