SINGAPORE: A senior immigration officer has been charged with accepting sexual favours from a Chinese national.
58-year-old Chung Cheong Weng committed the offences when he was attached to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority's (ICA) Investigation Branch.
Chung, who is a chief immigration and checkpoints specialist, allegedly accepted sexual favours from Li Yanxiu on five occasions at Bright Star Hotel in Lorong 17 Geylang between December 2006 and April 2007.
In return, Chung will recommend extending Li's Special Pass.
Investigations by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) also showed that in May 2007, Chung allegedly hindered the bureau's investigations by alerting Li and instructing her to delete their SMS exchange.
He also told her not to reveal their relationship to the CPIB.
Chung's case will be heard again on December 29.
If convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chung could be jailed up to five years, fined up to S$100,000, or both.
