A couple, both aged 33 years old, committed suicide in each other arms by inhaling charcoal fumes.

This tragedy took place in a three-room flat on the 8th floor of Blk 36 Queenstown, Tanglin Halt Road. Police arrived at the scene to find the bodies of the couple after receiving a call at 3:30pm.

The couple was believed to be white-collared workers. Mr Lin Jun Yang Don was a Singaporean who had just started a company in June this year while the woman, Zhang Xiao Hui from Chongqing, China gained citizenship in Singapore.

They were found dead in the room, locked in an embrace in bed. Police took away the charcoal in the room to be used as evidence.

Reporters who visited the scene this morning found the unit's windows and main door tightly shut, but were still able to discern the thick burning smell from the corridor.

Not easy to suicide by using charcoal because halfway many cannot take it very hard to breath and they will open window/door. This case 2 person chances to suicide using charcoal is even low either one halfway stop.

My info from neighbours is the young couple died of MONEY & DEBT problems.

The guy is Singaporean the woman PRC. They rented the house and have no kids 3 room flat.

Their friends failed to contact them via phone and came to bang door, and end up asking police to cut down the lock. Found them suicide using charcoal plus insecticide and might had taken sleeping pills.

They seldom speak to the neighbours.

At least they did not goto the popular Bedok Reservoir ... :(:*:

i do not think it will cause choking first. you will knock you unconsci first. I ever work in an environment where there is higher than normal level of nitrogen in the air thus rest of the percentage of the normal gases. you feel...god damn sleepy

It's not just charcoal. Any smoke staving off oxygen can kill you. The air you breathe must contain at least 20% oxygen. Otherwise you die.

Really tragic. Used to stay a few blocks away. Yes, gambling very rampant in Tanglin halt aka 10 story especially horse racing and football. There's a triangular shape hawker centre and is the happening place for horse betting or football betting, the police post is just 20-30 metres away from the hawker centre.

o$p$ is so common until the residents got used to it. I believe many matured estate have similar patterns.
