A resident gave us some packet drinks. He said he bought the drinks in anticipation that the Workers' Party would pay his home a visit during the campaign. What a kind and thoughtful man.

Workers' Party candidate Lee Li Lian said on Friday morning that she intends to champion the healthcare needs of the elderly if she is elected as MP for Punggol East.


In a post on her Facebook page, Ms Lee, 34, called for Medisave withdrawal limits to be lifted for patients above age 75 - a proposal which the WP had put forth in its 2011 general election manifesto. Currently, there are caps on the amount which can be withdrawn from each person's account, such as a maximum of $400 a year for outpatient treatment of chronic diseases.


Elderly patients should also not have to queue up at polyclinics just to get referrals for subsidised treatment at public hospitals, said Ms Lee.
"The senior citizens are the pioneers of Singapore who have contributed to nation building but have been forgotten in their twilight years," she said.


Ms Lee was unveiling another key campaign message after discussing the concerns of young couples and families in the first two days of the hustings for the Jan 26 by-election.

WP to hold by-election rally on Saturday

SINGAPORE: The Workers' Party (WP) will be the first opposition party to hold a rally for the Punggol East by-election.

It will be held at the open field in front of Blk 183C Rivervale Crescent between 7 and 10 pm on Saturday.

The WP candidate is 34-year-old sales trainer Lee Li Lian.

She had said the welfare of senior citizens is one issue she wants to push for in parliament, if elected.

In a Facebook post, Ms Lee said she wants the government to allow patients above 75 years old to use their Medisave for medical treatment without restriction.

WP continued with its house visits on Friday.

The party conducted its outreach away from the media glare.

Ms Lee had said she wants to cover all residential blocks in Punggol East.
