Look like a festive event, more crowds than chingay parade. 3 years time, these will be the scene across Singapore. The 7mil population didn't sit well with the people. WP needs to start drafting new policies, increase manpower, take in my candidates and sweep the Eastern to southern Singapore with a sea of Blue -

The above should be WP priority with limited resources. All other towns and GRC let other opposition run the show. Hope no more mutli-corner fight.

Lee Li Lian has a lot of 親和力. Can see from the photos she has a lot of support from Malays, Indians, Chinese, old, young etc.

Can also see alot of PE folks purposely choose to wear blue colour shirts on the day following PE election.

Overseas votes for Punggol East by-election counted

There were 59 overseas Punggol East voters registered, but only 27 turned up to cast their votes at the nine overseas polling stations last Saturday. The overseas votes were flown back to Singapore and counted by Elections Department on Wednesday.

Of the 27 votes, 19 went to the People's Action Party and seven to the Workers' Party. There was one spoilt vote.
The overseas tally did not affect the outcome of the by-election, which saw the Workers' Party candidate Lee Li Lian winning the four-way race. Singapore has allowed overseas voting since the May 2006 General Election.

[h=2]WP to merge Punggol East with AHTC[/h]



The Workers’ Party will be applying to merge the town council operations of Punggol East with its existing Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC), said Punggol East MP-elect Lee Li Lian and WP chairman Sylvia Lim on Thursday.


The merger will allow the new Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council to benefit from economies of scale and cost savings, said Ms Lee and Ms Lim in a statement. The new town council will manage the wards of all seven WP MPs in all, making it one of the largest councils in Singapore.


They added that Ms Lee’s ward will be able to draw on AHTC’s experience and resources in town council management. For instance, the AHTC standing committees, helmed by the WP MPs, will be able to offer advice on issues like the calling and awarding of contracts, financial matters and estate maintenance.

Aljunied-Hougang Town Council Media Release: Punggol East SMC – Preliminary update on handover of Town Council functions

Arising from the outcome of the Punggol East SMC by-election on 26 Jan 2013, the Workers’ Party has commenced preparations to take over the town council functions from Pasir Ris – Punggol Town Council.

Preliminary discussions commenced on 29 Jan 2013 between the outgoing and incoming managements, and more status updates will be given in due course.

The incoming management will be applying for Punggol East SMC to be merged with the existing Aljunied-Hougang Town to form a new town consisting of Aljunied GRC, Hougang SMC and Punggol East SMC. This proposed merger will give rise to a mutually beneficial relationship between Aljunied-Hougang Town and Punggol East:

1. The proposed Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council will now be bigger in size, giving greater flexibility to achieve higher operational efficiencies through process re-engineering, centralization of functions and specialization of work. While Punggol East SMC will be able to leverage on the economies of scale of a bigger town council, likewise, the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council will potentially be able to enjoy further cost savings arising from this merger.
2. Being part of the family, the Punggol East SMC will be able to benefit from the pooled experience and resources of both Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC in town council management. For example, the existing standing committees of AHTC which are helmed by the various Members of Parliament, will be able to advise on the calling and award of contracts, financial matters, estate maintenance and improvement, etc.

A key aspect of the handover is the need for the incoming management to have office premises within Punggol East SMC to operate from as soon as possible, to effect preparatory works. As the existing town council office at Blk 156A Rivervale Crescent is within the boundary of Punggol East SMC, having the incoming management take over the office would be the most obvious option. We will work with the Housing and Development Board on this issue urgently.

We thank the residents of Punggol East SMC for their support and look forward to serving them in the coming years.
