[h=5]Lee Li Lian (李丽连)[/h]Was very touched and happy to see so many of you this morning on the thank you parade despite it being a Sunday.

I am really grateful for your heartwarming support, as well as your crucial vote yesterday. I will definitely do my best!

We also met Dr Koh Poh Koon and the People's Action Party this morning as well and I would like to thank them for having a gentleman fight.

Last but not least, please note that the first Meet the People Session will begin on 4th February 2013 (Monday) at Blk 135 Rivervale Street at 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

[h=1]I will work very hard: WP's Lee[/h]

SINGAPORE — Workers' Party (WP) candidate Lee Li Lian emphasised her desire to work hard for the residents of Punggol East, ahead of the WP's victory parade that started at 10am today.

"I will work hard, I will work very hard, because I have 3 years instead of 5 years," she said.

She also added that she hoped to "get more woman and young people in to enervate awareness".
"I hope the results last night will encourage more women and younger people to come into politics because its not something to be fearful about"

For Ms Lee, it was not rest and relexation after winning the by-election despite a tough campaign, and it started again with the victory parade this morning.

"I slept about 3am and I've been answering a lot of emails and SMSes," she said. "The plan for today is the victory parade then I'll go over some matters with party members. I'm confident that as we move on, they'll be volunteers coming forward. In fact I've been receiving emails from some of them already. Like what we said yesterday, we'll be issuing a statement on the town council very soon. We're very grateful for the support and confidence but now is the time for hard work. It's an honour to be elected but we have the voters to thanks. The meet-the-people sessions will be the most immediate definitely so the residents can know we're to look for me."

She said volunteers in Hougang and Aljunied will help out during the transition period. She said she had already received several emails of volunteers from Punggol east and is confident more will step forward.

"We have a group of very reliable volunteers who have come forward to offer their services to the WP. There are plans to form a volunteer base in the area as well."

For now, Ms Lee said she will work with all relevant parties closely and ensure a problem free transition.

"The challenge would be town council matters, I would also like to bring up issues that I highlighted in the campaign," she said.
"I need some time to get into my new role."

Lee Li Lian receives hero’s welcome in Punggol East

  • Yahoo! Newsroom/Yahoo! Photos/ Elizabeth Soh - Lee Li Lian is all smiles at her victory parade

She may have gotten barely four hours worth of sleep, but victory was sweet indeed for the Workers' Party's Lee Li Lian as she embarked on a three hour thank you parade around her newly-won constituency.

The sales trainer was all smiles and confidence as she received a warm welcome at Blk 311, Rivervale Walk where the parade kicked off. Over a hundred residents swarmed around her and other WP members like Low Thia Kiang, Sylvia Lim, Png Eng Huat and Chen Show Mao, cheering “Huat Ah!” and congratulating her on her win.

“We woke up early and saw (WP supporters) from our living room window,” said secretary Eunice Tan, 30, who stays at Blk 114 and brought her two children down to wave to Lee.

  • Regan,6, waves a toy hammer in support of WP

Her son Regan, 6, in particular, drew much attention as he waved a plastic hammer and cheered for WP.

“We’re hoping that Li Lian will push for more benefits for us and serve as a checking voice in Parliament,” said Tan.

Speaking to reporters just before her party set off, Lee said that she was “honoured and grateful” for the mandate of the Punggol residents and would be working hard to make sure that she did not let them down.

Lee said that her immediate focus would be on kickstarting Meet-The-People Sessions so that “residents know where to find me”, and then on ensuring a smooth and peaceful takeover of the town council from the ousted PAP members.

She said that there would be no reason for severely delayed renovation works at Rivervale Plaza not to continue and finish on time given that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had already come forward to assure voters that it would be done.

“We have a very stable and dependable team at Hougang Town Council, it’s something we hope to bring here, and set up a strong volunteer base,” said Lee.

The rest of the parade continued on a high for Lee and her fellow party members as residents waved WP flags from their bedroom windows, some leaning out of the corridors of their HDB blocks to get a better look.

Groups of staunch supporters toting WP hammer umbrellas gathered at places like the Rivervale Plaza and Rivervale Mall, filling the neighbourhood with sounds of their whistles and cheers of victory.

Far from being disturbed by the noise, most Punggol East residents joined in – cars driving by tooted their horns, lowering windows to wave and yell “Lee Li Lian” while others came all the way up to the WP lorry to request a photo and shake Lee’s hands.

The most outspoken in their support were young families – more than one father was spotted hoisting his toddler onto his shoulders for a better look.

At one point, the WP lorry crossed paths with that of PAP’s Dr Koh. Dr Koh was spotted clapping politely and congratulating Lee on her win, which the WP responded to with friendly waves.

Lee’s historic win at the polls last night makes her the first female opposition member to win a single member constituency since 1965.

When asked if she felt her shock underdog win would inspire more to come forward to contribute to politics, Lee paused to consider the question.

“I hope that the results last night will encourage more women and young people to come forward. It’s not something to be afraid of. If you have a heart, you can do it,” she said, a determined gleam in her eyes.

Now, back to my car. My wife told me to leave the ugly scratches alone. Now that I had chosen to walk the path of politics, she said the marks on the car will serve as a reminder to me of what politics can be like. It is the ugly side of politics that we should be reminded of, an ugly side that everyone should work together to eradicate. So if you see a Honda Odyssey on the road with ugly scratches on its left side, you may also wish to ask yourself what you want Singapore’s politics to be like.
What kind of politics do we want in Singapore?

Town council handover to WP should be smooth: Zainal Sapari
By Sara Grosse | Posted: 28 January 2013 2005 hrs

SINGAPORE: Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and Chairman for Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council, Mr Zainal Sapari, said he wants to ensure a smooth handover of the Punggol East ward to the Workers' Party.

The Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC) is currently managed by the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council.

Mr Zainal told Channel NewsAsia on the phone that his team will be meeting the Workers' Party within the week to agree on a timeline to handover the town council management.

He said the usual practice would be to move contracts under the town council to the next party.

That party would then have to decide if it wants to continue with the existing contracts or take on new ones.

For example, the Workers' Party can decide to stay with the same cleaning contractor for the town council or get a different one.

On Wednesday, Mr Zainal will have a town council meeting where he will share with town councillors what arrangements have been made.

The road to Parliament may be a long one, but it was definitely not lonely.

This is a special mention to some of the members who have unwaveringly supported me through the years, and even more so during the Punggol East By-Election.

We started out as strangers, bonded together as friends because of our involvement in the Workers' Party, and had many good experiences together. I would never have made it without your firm belief and trust in me. Thank you.

Where will WP house Punggol East town council?

Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council can only vacate office when it finds an alternative site

By Sumita Sreedharan

SINGAPORE — The Workers’ Party (WP) may need to look for an alternative site to locate its town council office in Punggol East, because the existing town council office in the constituency — at Block 156A, Rivervale Crescent — will continue to be used by the People’s Action Party (PAP)-run Pasir Ris-Punggol town council for at least another six months while the ruling party looks for another site of its own.

According to Pasir Ris-Punggol town council Chairman Zainal Sapari, this is because the town council — which used to serve the residents of both Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and the Punggol East single seat ward when it was helmed by the PAP, would still need at least two offices to serve the residents of the GRC, as is the case with other GRCs.

Mr Zainal, nevertheless, said his town council will vacate its Rivervale Crescent office once it is able to find an alternate site in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC and the search will take “at least six months”.

A check by TODAY showed that town councils which are managing GRCs have at least two offices. Apart from its Rivervale Crescent office, Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council has another office at Blk 577, Pasir Ris St 53. Mr Zainal explained that his town council has five years remaining on a 10-year lease for its Rivervale Crescent premises.

After his town council moves out, it would be up to the WP to write in to the Housing and Development Board (HDB) if the Opposition party is interested to take over the office, he said. The HDB did not respond to TODAY’s queries by press time. The WP also did not reply to this newspaper’s questions on the issue but party Chairman Sylvia Lim did say the WP expects to issue a statement on the town council takeover in the middle of the week.

Stressing that the handover of the Punggol East ward will be “smooth”, Mr Zainal cited the matter as one of two issues — the other is the transfer of town council funds — that have to be discussed with the WP.

He said that he had been in touch with Ms Lim on the matter. A meeting has been planned “very soon” to agree on a timeline and work processes of the handover, he added.

He also assured that the town council funds will be allocated back to Punggol East Town Council “in a transparent way”, as items such as the operating fund is calculated based on per unit household.

Institute of Policy Studies’ Senior Research Fellow Gillian Koh reiterated that protocols and standard operating procedures have to be established for “the transition from one MP (Member of Parliament) to another, or to an Opposition MP and the most important thing is that (the parties) realise that we are in a new territory and they have to figure out how to manage it better”.

Singapore Management University School of Law’s Assistant Professor and Nominated Member of Parliament Eugene Tan added: “Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council will have to be careful not to take on unnecessary bad publicity as they could be seen as stonewalling the WP … They have had enough bad press over the AIM (Action Information Management) issue and the PAP can do without another issue that can generate as much bad press.”

Mr Zainal, who had a meeting with town council staff yesterday, also said that the employees who were looking after the Punggol East ward — there are fewer than 10 of them — will be absorbed by the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council’s managing agent, E M Services. The WP is expected to appoint its own managing agent.
