Getting ready for opening of Woodleigh MRT station
SINGAPORE: SBS Transit's Woodleigh MRT Station will open from Monday, making all 16 stations on the North East Line fully operational.
The station has remained closed since 2003, as the population in the area had been deemed insufficient to make economic sense to operate.
But eight years on, it's time to open the fare gates.
On the eve of the opening, SBS Transit conducted checks on the lifts, escalators and fare gates to ensure they are working well. Staff also gave the floors an extra shine.
Incidentally, the North East Line is celebrating its eighth anniversary as well.
Staff will be giving away 70,000 commemorative pass holders at all 16 stations including Woodleigh.
That's icing on the cake for residents living around Woodleigh station, who said its opening has been a long time coming.
A resident at nearby Avon Park condominium, Suchit Negi, said: "I've been a resident here for almost three years. We'd always take the bus but once you have the MRT, you just take it and you're right on the North East Line."
Another resident, 25-year-old Li Zhao Guo, said: "If this station doesn't open, we need to take the bus - three stops - to Potong Pasir MRT station. It takes us a lot of time."
A third resident, 62-year-old Lee Yoong Woa, said: "When I go to Potong Pasir to shop, one stop....makes things more convenient. See, I'm carrying so many bags!"
