Unlike 2006, the Prime Minister was facing, in this GE, a never-heard of team that was made up of people drawn from two political parties at the last minute. To make it much more easy for him, his opponent conducted zero campaign in his ward - not even a rally, no house visit, and I was told not even a street poster. The AMK opposition team was actually more of a joke than a group of politicians going out to win votes.
Despite all the advantages the PM enjoyed over his weak opponents, he merely scored an increase of 3% more votes than the previous GE. I called that an INSULT.
Goh Chok Tong scored 56.65% in this GE. He called his achievement "strong mandate"! I would like to remind the SM that he is a very senior minister in the Cabinet and his previous records were 72.94% (1992 By-Election) and 77.25% (1991 GE). His opponents in yesterday GE were nobody and probably started campaigning the Marine Parade GRC for less than 2 or 3 weeks.
So, Goh Joke Tong, after working in the Marine Parade GRC for more than 20 years, you called your 56% a strong mandate? You must be joking, weren't you?</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
