If you don’t have a job you get zero against those with jobs. So our first priority is jobs for everybody,” - Lee Kuan Yew
Let's see... Suppose I have $100 a day to spare, I can create 10 jobs for $10/ea. Never mind if $10 for 8 hours per day is too low. 10 jobs had being created.
If you as a Singaporean do not want this job, I will use the PAP well-used line and say that you are too choosy, never mind if $10/day will not even cover your meals, transports and other basic cost of living. I can then use this excuse to offer this job to a foreigner from a 3rd world country.
And the interesting thing is, although I save a lot in wage cost by hiring cheap foreign workers, my savings do not necessarily pass on to the consumers. Kopi-o price from coffee shops run by all PRC still increase, HDB flats prices built by all foreign labourers still increase, medical bill in hospital staffed by majority of foreign nurses and doctors still increase... etc... The cost of living still goes up and up no matter how much I as an employer save in wage cost.
And how about the common man on the street? If you want a job, you need to compete with the foreigners and the one costing the least will get it. Your cost of living goes up, you wage goes down. The economy humps along and more foreigners come in to oil its wheel. GDP goes up, your standard of living goes down. Inflation goes up, your earning power goes down. Ministers salaries goes up, your livelihood goes down.
What can you do? Maybe eat less, work more, tighten that belt and bite the bullet, indefinitely. Work cheaper, work better and work faster perhaps according to a certain minister who ironically do not have to work cheaper, better or faster. Or maybe there is something else you can do about it? If only you can trace back your steps and recall what brought you to this situation in the 1st place.
I don't know, you tell me. Afterall, 66.6% of you voted for this to happen right? </TD></TR><TR><TD class=ptfPostSignatureBox vAlign=bottom><TABLE class=bottomTable border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" height=30><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD class=msgleft width="1%"> </TD><TD class=msgopt width="24%" noWrap> Options</TD><TD class=msgrde width="50%" noWrap align=middle> Reply</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
