[h=1]Virus causes high blood pressure?[/h]

Washington, Aug 15 (PTI) A new research has suggested for the first time that a common virus is the cause of high blood pressure, a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

A team of Chinese doctors has claimed that it has got strong evidence of a link between the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), which infects people all over the world, and essential hypertension -- the most common form of high blood pressure, the ''Circulation'' journal reported.

"The findings demonstrate a novel link between HCMV infection and essential hypertension. These findings may reveal important insights into the pathogenesis of essential hypertension," say the doctors from Chaoyang Hospital.

A member of the herpes virus family, HCMV affects all age groups and is the source of congenital infection, and severe infection in transplant patients.

By 40 years, most adults will have contracted the virus, though many will never exhibit symptoms. Once it has entered the body, it is usually there to stay, remaining latent until the immune system is compromised, when it then reemerges.

According to the doctors, the research will have widespread health implications as World Health Organisation says around a billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure.

BEIJING, China - High blood pressure could be caused by a common virus, according to a study carried out by a team of Chinese doctors which has possible implications for millions of people around the world.
The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infects most adults but is repressed by the body's immune system and rarely causes any symptoms.
But a team from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital's cardiology centre has found the first evidence of a link between HCMV and essential hypertension, according to a report published on the website of the US medical journal Circulation.
Essential hypertension, the world's most common form of high blood pressure, has in the past been linked to lifestyle and genetic factors.
The findings "demonstrate a novel link between HCMV infection and essential hypertension," according to the report.
"These findings may reveal important insights into the pathogenesis of essential hypertension," it added.
The study could have widespread health implications -- the World Health Organization says around a billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure.
Former Circulation chief editor James Willerson posted comments on Beijing Chaoyang Hospital's website, saying the findings of the study "might present a new strategy for preventing and treating cardiovascular disease".

High blood pressure caused by Herpes virus? Lol. The words 'PRC medical research' is indeed an oxymoron.

Typical Ah Tiongs believe intravenous drip cure all kinds of diseases. Which probably explains why China has the fastest growing HIV cases in the world.

I can't decide which is funnier. The Chinese quacks living in the Dark Ages who claim that Herpes causes High Blood Pressure. Or the ex-convict Chinaman who thumped his chest before posting this thread to show-off his Motherland's (lack of) achievements.

Hilariously stupid.

this is published in a peer review paper that is widely recognised world wide. circulation journal has an impact factor ~14.6, one publication of such impact factor is enough to graduate with a phd locally

Chinaman, have you ever been to Uni?

You don't need to publish your thesis in a Journal to get a Phd, you just need to write a thesis that satisfies the committee and defend it successfully.

Peer reviewed? By whom? Show me evidence.

no one publish your thesis in a journal don't be a joke. this statement simply means you have no idea what is going on.

thesis ~ 100 pages to 150 pages
Journal ~ 10 pages

this simply shows the fact that most likely you have never read thesis or journals from science.

go find out for yourself to see the requirement for publishing in such journal.

Graduate with a phd without any publication is possible if you are under a PI that has no standard at all. Sorry I do not lower myself to that kind of level. Out in the industry, if you dare to admit this and you have a phd NO ONE WILL RESPECT YOU.

Chinese medical achievements is higher than the USA in many aspects. Survival Rate of SARS patients is the most solid prove. Their successful rescue of patients considered as dead by the west broke many many barriers leaving western morons far behind. Cases like very high percentage burns of body surface, brain injury / coma / brain death, cancer, stroke, etc.

Chinese can perform open surgery without any anesthesia using acupuncture only. Their ability to treat poisoning cases that would been deemed as fatal in many other countries is also recognised.

The main reason is Chinese has their own unique traditional experience and knowledge of medicine to a profound extend of few thousand years, and they are not blindly following the foolish western practices just like Singaporeans, the Chinese are guided by their own medical culture, and selectively they will pick strength of western knowledge to combine and supplement their own.

The study on virus is just one example. High blood pressure is traditionally treated with herbs, to adjust the human bodies natural functions and bring it to a healthy balance. None medical practices such as Qigong & Taiji are used to further achieve good balance of health. There is further a culture of food, living and other practices (do-s and don't-s) that keeps the health of people. Western culture and lifestyle / values ruined health of many Asians, particularly in SG. High Blood Pressure, Heart Problems, Kidney Problems, came from many such western rubbish like Mc Donalds KFC etc.

Background- Essential hypertension has been recognized as a disease resulting
from a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Recent studies
demonstrated that microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in cardiac hypertrophy and
heart failure. However, little is known about the roles of miRNAs in essential
hypertension. Methods and Results- Using microarray-based miRNA expression
profiling, we compared the miRNA expressions in plasma samples from 13
hypertensive patients and 5 healthy control subjects. Twenty-seven miRNAs were
found to be differentially expressed. The expressions of selected miRNAs
(miR-296-5p, let-7e, and a human cytomegalovirus [HCMV]-encoded miRNA,
hcmv-miR-UL112) were validated independently in plasma samples from 24
hypertensive patients and 22 control subjects. The absolute expression levels of
hcmv-miR-UL112, miR-296-5p, and let-7e were further determined in 127 patients
and 67 control subjects (fold changes are 2.5, 0.5, and 1.7 respectively; all
P<0.0001). Additionally, we demonstrated that interferon regulatory factor 1 is a
direct target of hcmv-miR-UL112. Increased HCMV seropositivity and quantitative
titers were found in the hypertension group compared with the control group
(52.7% versus 30.9%, P=0.0005; 1870 versus 54 copies per 1 mL plasma, P<0.0001).
Seropositivity, log-transformed copies of HCMV, and hcmv-miR-UL112 were
independently associated with an increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio,
2.48; 95% confidence interval, 1.48 to 4.15; P=0.0005; odds ratio, 1.97; 95%
confidence interval, 1.58 to 2.46; P<0.0001; and odds ratio, 2.55; 95% confidence
interval, 1.98 to 3.27; P<0.0001, respectively). Conclusions- We report for the
first time a circulating miRNA profile for hypertensive patients and demonstrate
a novel link between HCMV infection and essential hypertension. These findings
may reveal important insights into the pathogenesis of essential hypertension.

Human cytomegalovirus infection is a novel etiology for essential hypertension.

Essential hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular,
cerebrovascular, and renal diseases. However, the underlying cause and pathologic
mechanisms of essential hypertension are poorly understood. Vascular inflammation
and endothelial dysfunction are implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension
based on associations with elevated expression of adhesion molecules and
chemokines and dysfunctional nitric oxide synthase. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)
has been implicated in several cardiovascular disorders, including
atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and cardiac transplant arteriopathy.
Recent studies have suggested that HCMV is associated with cardiovascular
disorders through impaired endothelial nitric oxide synthase function and
subsequent endothelial dysfunction, which manifest as impaired vasculature
dilation in vivo. However, direct links between human cytomegalovirus infection
and essential hypertension remain undefined. Based on current studies, we present
a hypothesis that human cytomegalovirus is an opportunistic pathogen that causes
essential hypertension by disrupting nitric oxide synthesis and immune defense
and by activating inflammation and the renin-angiotensin system.

The reports said can make vaccine in the future. That means one will be safe from high blood pressure - & thus stroke once vaccinated.
