Polytechnic student: I don’t care about the Youth Olympic Games
August 12th, 2010 | Author: Contributions
Hi I’m a young Singaporean who is currently a student at one of the local polytechnics. I don’t know deeply about politics but I visit this website for some alternative news on the YOG, which is an issue that’s been on my mind recently.
Now, the Government and YOG committees must be pretty glad that the YOG is on the mind of a youth. But let me tell you all I have are negative thoughts about it.
The YOG is an epic failure on an national and international scale. All my friends in school either don’t care about it, or despise it for all the inconveniences its been causing us. Don’t forget the “Oh yeah, Oh yeah” YOG Cheer by JJ Lin which was a complete piece of crap.
One of my mates, he even came up with a new name for the games: The Youth OlymPIGS.
The recent CNA survey found that 88 percent of 6,430 respondents said they were ”not interested at all” to watch any of the nonsense. Let me speak as an ambassador for the youth in my poly: WE ARE NOT INTERESTED AT ALL.
Get out of our face. The way you’re pushing the games is so lame and propagandistic. If we really had a sense that it was worth caring about, we would. So if we’re not, maybe its just that we don’t care?
And why don’t we care? Some of us think its a waste of time and money. Some of us don’t feel anything even for the National Day Parade, so what more for this nonsense competition that even the best youth athletes are not interested in themselves?
I tried to find out what were the teams actually playing the YOG soccer league and found a stupid page only saying whether they were boys or girls games. I mean how would anyone know what tickets they want to buy if they dont even know what teams were playing?

It is only when you read carefully that you will find the information you need right at the bottom in small and of course its easy to miss, which still means its a sucky website/event details
According to the site, the soccer league has only 6 teams participating and none of them are from any notable countries. Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, but the YOG male soccer tournament will only feature participating teams from 6 countries including Singapore: Zimbabwe, Cuba, Bolivia, Vanuatu and Montenegro.
As far as I can tell, HALF THE TEAMS in the YOG soccer league are from countries which are dictatorships! That says alot about our red dot doesn’t it?
In another report, Mr Niam Chiang Meng, perm secretary of the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), admitted to being “a bit naive with our initial estimates”.
Naivete is usually a characteristic associated with youth, Mr Niam.
You as a high ranking official in MCYS should have known better.
Oh well, whatever, never mind. I don’t care about your stupid YOG.
