SINGAPORE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, when gatherings were limited to five people, two men hosted a drug-fuelled birthday party for 34 guests at their shared home.
The police arrested the men at the unit early the next morning and ecstasy or MDMA was found in urine samples of 22 of the partygoers.
One of the two hosts, 33-year-old Singaporean Edmund Zachary Ong Wei Ming, pleaded guilty on Monday (May 27) to three charges of permitting his unit to be used for drug consumption, consuming a drug and permitting others to enter the unit for a birthday celebration during the pandemic.
Another two charges for consuming two other types of drugs will be taken into consideration for sentencing.
Ong's alleged co-host, 35-year-old Malaysian Jonathan Goh Wai Sern, is at large, with a warrant of arrest against him.
THE CASE
The court heard that Ong began staying in Goh's guest room at a location redacted from court documents since September or October 2021.He paid Goh S$1,000 a month for rent.
From about 7pm on Mar 26, 2022, when COVID-19 restrictions were still in place, Goh and Ong hosted a birthday party for another person.
A total of 34 guests attended the party.
The partygoers mingled with one another, drank alcohol, sang karaoke, ate, danced and took drugs at the party, the prosecution said.
Ong knew that drugs such as MDMA, GHB and ketamine were being consumed at the party.
He admitted that there were a few cups of red wine mixed with crushed tablets of ecstasy on the living room table, which were being passed around and consumed by the attendees.
Some also took ecstasy tablets. Ong said he knew that his guests were consuming drugs and allowed it to continue.
At about 6am the next day, the police turned up at the unit and arrested Ong and 35 other people. It was not stated how the authorities caught wind of the situation.
After his arrest, Ong gave two urine samples, which were found to contain norketamine, also known as K.
He also admitted to consuming ecstasy or MDMA and G-water or GHB. He said he took the drugs as he was "stressed since before the COVID-19 pandemic".
A total of 22 guests had also taken ecstasy at the party, as seen in their urine test results.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Quek Lu Yi is seeking about two years' jail for Ong.
She said the purpose of the gathering was "frivolous", with the number of guests at 34 significantly above the five-person limit at the time.
The gathering also lasted for about 11 hours, ending only when police raided the house.
Ong will return to court for sentencing in June.
