SINGAPORE - The new line-up of political office-holders and mayors will include six members of the Malay community, two of them full ministers.
Mr Masagos Zulkifli, who will give up his portfolio in Environment and Water Resources to take on Social and Family Development, was the only Malay minister for a while after Professor Yaacob Ibrahim stepped down from the Cabinet in April 2018.

But he will now be joined by Dr Maliki Osman, who has been promoted to Minister in the Prime Minister's Office as well as Second Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs.

Dr Maliki is currently Senior Minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, announcing Dr Maliki's new appointments, said he has performed well, and it was time for him to take on more responsibilities.
Two other Malay office holders will also be promoted.

Minister of State Zaqy Mohamad will become a Senior Minister of State for Manpower and Defence. He will relinquish his National Development portfolio.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim will be promoted to Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development. Dr Faishal is currently at the Education and Social and Family Development ministries.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Mr Masagos congratulated the Malay MPs on their promotions and acknowledged their hard work to better the lives of people in the community.

Dr Maliki said during the press conference on Saturday that the Malay MPs will continue to strengthen their work under the collaborative framework known as M³, which includes the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), self-help group Mendaki and the People's Association Malay Activity Executive Committees Council (Mesra).

People's Association called out by netizens for shifting blame to vendor over Hari Raya standee fiasco - The Online Citizen Asia
The People’s Association (PA) has removed the controversial Hari Raya standee at Tiong Bahru Orchid which used a wedding photograph of a Malay-Muslim couple without permission.

The photograph of the couple in traditional Malay wedding attire was used to create the standee, displayed on a platform next to a banner depicting Radin Mas MP Melvin Yong and his seasonal wishes.

When she was alerted by a couple of friends that her wedding photo was used for this, Ms Sarah Bagharib took to Instagram on Saturday (29 May) to note that neither her, her husband, or the photographer were approached for permission.

She wrote, “Using a wedding photo to depict Malays/Singaporean Muslims celebrating Hari Raya is inappropriate. Using my wedding photo without my consent is unwarranted. Using my wedding photo as a caricature of Malay people is unacceptable.”

She also told The Straits Times that she felt the whole thing was “rude”, regardless of whether it was done by a third-party vendor or the PA itself.

“In the larger scheme of things, what does this reflect? The PA is meant to be a statutory board that seeks to promote social cohesion and harmony in Singapore,” she said.

In its statement apologising for the incident, the PA said: “This should not have happened. Neither our vendor nor Radin Mas CO obtained any permission to do so. This is against the policies which have been put in place. We have since spoken to the vendor on the seriousness of this infringement, and will follow up with the appropriate steps.

“Nonetheless, the PA, including Radin Mas CO, takes responsibility for this error as we had oversight of the matter, and the decorations were allowed to be put up.”

However, netizens on The Straits Times and Channel NewsAsia Facebook pages are not quite ready to forgive this error in judgement of the PA. Many were upset over the PA’s shifting blame to the vendor instead of taking on full accountability for its mistake.

Several people pointed out that while the vendor may have been the one to print the standee or suggest the idea, the PA is still the client that would have had to give its stamp of approval for anything to happen in the first place.

Netizens also called out the PA for its cultural insensitivity and ignorance at not knowing the difference between Malay-Muslim wedding attire and Hari Raya, as well as for the lack of research they put into this. One person described it as “tone deaf”.

A few people pointed out that the lack of diversity in the PA staff might have led to this, and suggested that the PA should start hiring people of different races so as to avoid such mistakes in the future.

One netizen pointed out how this incident highlights the “failure of our racial harmony program”, and slammed the PA for not understanding the festivities, culture and values of Malay-Muslim Singaporeans despite its over 50-year history.

Singapore—After the People’s Association apologised to Ms Sarah Bagharib for using her wedding picture as a standee for a Hari Raya celebration without her and her husband’s consent, she wrote in an Instagram post that she “acknowledged and appreciated” the gesture.

However, Ms Bagharib also pointed out a “superficial understanding of the gravity of the issue” in the apology and said that “there is a larger issue affecting the wider Malay/Muslim community”.

She then asked if a lack of diversity in the PA’s leadership could have led to the lapses that caused her wedding photo to be used.

The hijacked photo first came to light when Ms Bagharib posted on Instagram on May 28 that she “discovered much to my dismay the use of my and my husband’s wedding photograph at Tiong Bahru Orchid (Jalan Bukit Merah) in celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year”.

She called the usage of their photo “inappropriate” and “unwarranted,” adding that “using my wedding photo as a caricature of Malay people is unacceptable”.

Ms Bagharib added, “It was insensitive on many levels, but telling of your flagrant disregard for copyright laws, norms of proprietary, privacy and disrespect for Malay/Singaporean Muslim culture stemming from sheer ignorance.”
Shortly afterwards, the People’s Association apologised to Ms Bagharib.

It wrote in an Instagram post that it “apologized unreservedly to Ms Sarah Bagharib and her family for the distress our mistake has caused,” and that it explained to her “the circumstances that led to the error”.

The PA wrote that the vendor, whom it named, had come up with the concept but “unfortunately” downloaded the photo, which was “against the policies that have been put in place”.

The vendor had since been spoken to, and the PA said it would follow up with appropriate steps.

On June 1 (Monday), Ms Bagharib responded to PA’s apology, but brought up issues that affect the Malay/Muslim community in Singapore.

She took issue with what she considered to be the PA’s failure to “indicate (what) concrete and sincere effort” it would take to “correct the process” that allowed the use of her wedding photo.

While the PA mentioned that using the photo is against their policies, Ms Bagharib wondered what exactly those policies are, asking for “greater transparency” in the matter.

She also called the PA out for its “hastiness” in publishing the name of the vendor, saying that it looked like “an attempt to distance” itself and “deflect blame”.

As for the “steps” the PA would take to educate its staff and vendors to be more culturally sensitive, she wrote that “61 years after (PA’s) inception”, it’s unfortunate that this is still necessary.

“Ethic minorities in Singapore are equal stakeholders in the work that you do,” she reminded the organisation.

She then went on to ask whether the lack of cultural and ethnic diversity in PA’s leadership — “group directors, directors, and deputy directors ” — could have “trickled down” to the rest of the organisation and might have been the reason behind the usage of her wedding photo.
Ms Bagharib ended her post saying she hoped to get a response from the PA and that she would be “happy to meet and discuss” the issue.

Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Philipines and Singapura is the Malay Nusantara homeland. We are not the migrants here.

Yes you are migrants here too.

The indigenous people in peninsula malaysia are the orang asli, who are culturally distinct from both the historical hindu m&ds and the most recent moslem m&ds. Your past moslem sultans also behaved like they were settlers here. The sultans often launched raids into orang asli villages to kill their men, enslave their women and kidnap orang asli children for slavery and forced religious conversion to islam. Those are visible signs that the m&d sultans didn't consider orang asli territory as part of his sultanate, but instead as foreign soil to be raided repeatedly or even conquered.

That is still debated by the experts which doesn't include you.

But fact is YOU are the immigrant. No dispute. No doubts. Can you leave first?

The fact is YOU are the immigrant. There's no dispute that you are not native to Singapore. Fuck off!
