The incident yesterday at the 248th km of the southbound route left one dead and four others in the van injured.

Benny Goh Kim Boon, 63, died on the spot while the others were taken in an ambulance to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh where they received outpatient treatment. Two others in the group and the Malaysian driver escaped unhurt. The van belongs to a travel agency in Kuala Lumpur.

Perak Traffic chief Superintendent Wan Abdullah Ishak said the group was on their way back from a holiday in Penang when the 11.40am incident took place just 500m before the Sungai Perak rest area.

"Apparently, the driver lost control of the van when he tried to avoid another multi-purpose vehicle," he said. "The other driver was trying to overtake the van to get to the turn-off lane to the rest area," he said. He added that the van driver had lodged a police report.
