Double headed snake gets whacked from both sides!

Pakistan want to befriend both US/NATO & the Islamic Militants, they are eventually getting attacked by BOTH. Pakistan kept Osama Bin Laden safe for some time, but eventually let US in to kill him. In the whole string of conflicts Pakistan only get attacked by both sides. Bombs from NATO and bombs from militants flies within their territory and making them a war zone.

An already fragile diplomatic situation between the U.S. and Pakistan just got worse.

Saturday officials in Pakistan accused NATO of killing 25 soldiers in two helicopter attacks on military checkpoints on the border with Afghanistan, according to The New York Times.

“This incident is highly regrettable and condemnable,” Kyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province governor Masood Kausar told a local television network, according to the Times. “This is not a small incident. It is being taken very seriously.”

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the attacks, and the country closed the border crossing in response, blocking NATO supplies from entering Afghanistan.

The country’s northwestern border with Afghanistan has been a flashpoint in the Afghanistan War, and U.S. officials have complained that Pakistan’s policing of the area — significant because Taliban fighters and other militants have used it for cross-border attacks — has been poorly coordinated.

The BBC reports that the attack came at around 2 a.m. local time at the Salala checkpoint, just 1.5 miles from the Afghan border, and was allegedly carried out by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. NATO officials said they were conducting a thorough investigation of the incident.

I.S.A.F. commander Gen. John R. Allen made a statement, saying:

“My most sincere and personal heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of any members of Pakistan Security Forces who may have been killed or injured.”

Tensions have been high between the U.S. and Pakistan since the May raid that killed Osama Bin Laden — an action carried out unilaterally by American elite military forces without the knowledge of Pakistan’s military despite being well within its borders.

The airstrike would prove the deadliest such attack in the 10-year war in Afghanistan.

It would be of great entertainment value however to see something really hard and effective and colourful to emerge to take the really lacking role to this world stage. I am willing to sit down and watch that. For a good piece of bait you can be used, you are a legitimate bait and I wont' feel guilty at all to watch you torn up and eaten by the beast since you are against them. Pakistan threatens to cut US ties

Pakistan's prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has ruled out "business as usual" with the United States after a NATO attack killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Saturday's air strikes on Pakistan's border with Afghanistan have complicated US attempts to ease a crisis in relations with Islamabad and stabilise the region before foreign combat troops leave Afghanistan.

"Business as usual will not be there," Mr Gilani told CNN when asked if ties with the United States would continue.

"We have to have something bigger so as to satisfy my nation.

"You cannot win any war without the support of the masses," he added. "We need the people with us."

The relationship, he said, would continue only if based on "mutual respect and mutual interest."

Asked if Pakistan was receiving that respect, Mr Gilani replied: "At the moment, not."

Pakistan's army has threatened to drastically curtail cooperation with Washington on Afghanistan in the wake of the attack.

"This could have serious consequences in the level and extent of our cooperation," military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said.

Pakistan has a long history of ties to militant groups in Afghanistan and is uniquely positioned to help bring about a peace settlement, a top foreign policy and security goal for the Obama administration.

Washington believes Islamabad can play a critical role in efforts to pacify Afghanistan before all NATO combat troops pull out in 2014, and cannot afford to alienate its ally.

Pakistan shut down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan in retaliation for the weekend incident, the worst of its kind since Islamabad allied itself with Washington in 2001.

"We have been here before. But this time it's much more serious," said Farzana Sheikh, associate fellow of the Asia program at Chatham House in London.

"The government has taken a very stern view. It is not quite clear at this stage what more Pakistani authorities can do, apart from suspending supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan."

Adding a new element to tensions and a diplomatic boost for Islamabad, Pakistan's ally China said it was "deeply shocked" by the incident and expressed "strong concern for the victims and profound condolences for Pakistan".

Russia, which has been seeking warmer relations with Pakistan as worry grows over the NATO troop pullout in Afghanistan, said it was "unacceptable" to violate the sovereignty of states even when hunting "terrorists."

NATO described the killings as a "tragic, unintended incident." US officials say a NATO probe and a separate American probe will seek to determine what really happened.

Why would NATO troops attack Pakistani troops if unprovoked? The reverse question is easier answered. Plenty of reasons for Pakistani troops to provoke or attack them first. The top two reasons are of course religion and stupidity. There're others, you go figure.

US has right to self-defense as Pak does: Pentagon?
See photo

WASHINGTON, With Pakistan vowing to respond with "full force" to any future aggression in the wake of the deadly NATO strike, the Pentagon has said that Islamabad has the right to self-defence and so does the US.

It also admitted that the last Saturday air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers has had a "chilling effect" on US-Pak military relations.

"I've seen the comments attributed to General Kayani. I'm certainly not going to speak for him or for the government of Pakistan.

"But every sovereign nation has the right of self-defense and the right to order their troops to defend themselves. That's what my understanding is what he did: He reiterated their right of self-defense. We certainly respect that right of his. We have it as well," Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt John Kirby told reporters yesterday.

He was repsonding to questions about Pakistan army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani ordering his troops to respond with "full force" to any further "act of aggression" by NATO forces.

Kirby also said, "I think it's safe to say that the incident has had a chilling effect on our relationship with the Pakistani military, no question about that. Both sides deem it to be as serious as it was."

US-Pakistan ties close to collapse: Chinese daily

Story
Comments

Read more on »Ties|collapse|Chinese daily
BEIJING: The death of two dozen Pakistani soldiers in a NATO attack was a "symbolic event indicating the progressive deterioration" of US-Pakistan bilateral ties, a Chinese daily said Sunday.

Pakistan reacted to the Nov 26 NATO air strike by closing the supply lines for US and NATO troops and also demanded American troops to leave the Shamsi air base in the country.

"This is the worst setback for the US-Pakistan anti-terrorism coalition since its establishment 10 years ago, and also a symbolic event indicating the progressive deterioration of US-Pakistan relations after the (Raymond) Davis case and the death of Osama bin Laden earlier this year," the People's said wrote in an opinion piece.

Davis was a CIA contractor who shot dead two Pakistani men in Lahore. The US government had to intervene after he was arrested.

"The US-Pakistan anti-terrorism coalition is about to collapse," it said, adding that different strategic objectives were the basic causes behind the unsustainable relationship.

"An important reason leading the anti-terrorism coalition to the verge of collapse is that the US follows no rules in its anti-terrorism actions," it said.

"The US always says 'rules must be followed' on the one hand, but on the other hand it ignores basic principles of international law while conducting anti-terrorism activities in Pakistan and Afghanistan," it said.

US drones have "recklessly trampled on Pakistan's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity", and caused casualties of Pakistani civilians as well as soldiers.

The killing of bin Laden by US special troops in May reveals America's selfishness and distrust in Pakistan, the daily said.

The US never never regarded Pakistan as an equal anti-terrorism partner.

Since the beginning of 2011, the Pakistani government has been facing "heavy domestic pressure" about the anti-terrorism alliance.

Pakistani people regard the US crossing of the Pakistani border to kill bin Laden as a "public insult to their country" and have started to question the Pakistani army's capacity to defend the country.

The relationship between Pakistan and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has also "dropped to the freezing point", it said.

"If the US does not change its policies and take measures to guarantee Pakistan's sovereign and security, the alliance will inevitably come to an end," the daily concluded.
