Your argument doesn't hold ground. If what you said is true, Japan should be a slum country by now but it still holds the 3rd largest economy in the world. If not, look at israel, they fair so much better than Singapore despite surrounded with threat.

Japan is a homogeneous society with a strong work ethic and a proud tradition of excellence that has lasted for centuries. They aren't as powerful as they used to be but Japanese companies still rule the world in many areas.
Singapore is a rag tag collection of coolies from India and China.
There is simply no comparison.

The PAP of today is a far cry from the past! People respected their views and the way they worked to build Singapore is there for everyone to see. And I do think that these brave men worked tirelessly to prove something cos they came into politics fighting communism, communalism and cultural chauvinism!
Can we say the same of the scholars who rule the civil service and PAP of today ? The PAP has evolved to belief that so long as we can put money in the pockets of its voters , they will be returned to power at each election. The civil servants likewise dare not utter anything that their Ministers may disagree with.
What we need is a few good men... And they can come in white, blue , red or orange!

Don't harbour that hope as long as PAP remain in power and ASME still addicted to cheap foreign labour. Besides, Automobile company sounds like an alien to Ho Jin, she is a gamble addict too. Nope, we don't have home grown billionaires other than the white stooges. I have coloured SA friends who have told me exactly that. While their political rights were denied during apatheid rule, their right to pop down to the shops at night was upheld because there was law and order.
They now have voting rights but instead they decided to vote with their feet and emigrate to NZ. They tell me the right to vote cost them the right to feel safe and secure. They left because they were worried for the lives and dignity of their daughters and wives.
Singapore has Sim Wong Hoo and what has he done for the country since 2000 other than making some dumbass statement about taking on and beating Steve Jobs to pulp.
There is a dearth of talent in Singapore. Chase out all the foreigners and you're left with nothing. Consider yourself lucky to have LKY at the right time but the country has to accept that its glory days are over no matter who runs the country.

The PAP is addicted to ruthless GDP growth and businesses are addicted to cheap labour to improve their bottomline. Now with all the SMEs here, Sporeans are already seeing their pay packets shrink and some are out of work.
South Korean did not yield to pressure from businesses to implement pro-business policies to allow businesses to import cheap FTs to boost their profits. The South Korean economy did not sink from the lack of labor force growth instead flourished with improvements in productivity and innovation. We need to bite the bullet and forge a more sustainable economy.

You may be right to a certain extent. But who is to blame? We know our forefathers were innovative pioneers, before the govt started screwing up our education institutions by putting emphasis on grades and paper qualifications and inculcated a culture of risk aversion. Not to mention the millions of rules and regulations that govern our lives. They wanted an obedient and sedated people.

No they weren't. There were a handful who were good traders but that was about it. The rest of them made a living as small time sole proprietors running provision shops or hawking food. Most were labourers, dockhands, rubber tappers, nightsoil carriers, black and white amahs, sumsui women etc.
Yeah! No Singaporean born guy or gal was good enough to be a doctor , lawyer, engineer , accountant , teachers, military or police commanders. Everyone was imported !
