1st 6 month the theme park will have many local kaisu visitor. But after 6 month the it will be just like Singapore Flyer not people riding anymore due to overpricing. Imagine going with family of 4 price will be more than $200 that not included transportation to the theme park and one more things to take note is the F&B in the park will be about twice or tripple the price compare to food court just. Imagine one can of soft drink will be at least $2.

Don't think they can survive if they only rely on tourists. Same thing with the IRs.

Theme parks have to depend on tourists. How many times does one visit Universal Studios or Disneyland?

And the casino operators put up their bids on the basis that they will not expect many Singaporeans (the $100/day fee to keep them away).

In order to survive theme park will need at least average of 70% local customer. Just see how many local visitor in Japan and US theme park. Very soon theme park will become white elephant.

Tourists worldwide head to Anaheim because got Disney, Universal Studios, Hollywood, San Francisco, Vegas,....

You expect tourist to come to Spore because of beauy of Sentosa
Not forgetting that Spore is not attractive as hotels are expensive.

I've been to Disney & see many locals but then California has over 36 million people. Disney also changes their attractions regularly. How often have you seen Sentosa do that

As for the casino operators, how much are they being subsidise by the PAP gov't:confused:

Its kind of sad that this is the same gov't which demolished many of the old & genuine tourist attractions like China town, Little India, ... Sporeans must now go to KL to see such 'attractions'

Actually we should not ask about the price of entering the theme park but should question instead if Singapore has a critical mass to support the operation of one.

I am not an expert in theme park but from my experience in my US stay, theme parks are rated by their size and of course the number of rides they have. Each theme park competes by building the best and more exciting ride each year. Given the land size of US, the land is virtualy free, this free out quite a but of cash. Imagine some of the theme parks in US open only in Summer (about 3 to 4 months). They have the season pass system, which a customer can pay about US$90 and have unlimited entry to the theme park for the year. Also, you will see a lot of student interning at the theme parks during their summer vacations. This help to bring down the operational costs too.

Bottomline, however, is that US has a huge critical mass to tap into. The ppl who patronise theme parks are teens (high school outings) and parents (family outings). Working adults are hated to be seen in theme parks because they feel it is so uncool.

We also have a problem in attracting repeat visitors. Say half of our population like theme parks, about 2.5 mil, do you think they will pay to visit the same theme park twice in a year? It will end up the same as the Flyer. By the way, I have not visit the flyer yet.

.

I notice that the majority of visitors to Sentosa are the young. These students will be too busy when there are classes going on.

The balance of aunties & unlces will choose more relaxing pastime of window shopping in the malls.

There might be millions of foreigners in Spore but only a small number that can afford to visit Sentosa & some will be attracted to alternative parks nearby in Austalia, HK, China,..

If you want to spend some quality time with your family, why would you choose expensive Spore

how many of you here have visited the singapore flyer ever since they open ?

I wouldve visited the Flyer if its not for its short duration (30 min) & not so cheap price ($33, I believe). For that amount X2(only mentalist will visit the Flyer alone) I rather spent it on good food. Whats to see on top of the flyer? The half naked ah neh & ah tiong construction workers at the incomplete IR?

How much of the overall cost of building the SG Flyer is attributed to the price of the occupied land? Just being curious.

For SG Flyer to survive in SG, it needs to be more creative. I understand the management has promotional activities with the restaurants and shops there to give discounts on the rides. However, it doesn't seem to improve sales.

In my opinion, it's because the management has wrong focus. They need to be flexible to change their strategy. I believe they think the Flyer itself can be the main attraction to draw ppl (tourists and locals) to it. Due to the high price, it is actually turning away potential clients. My suggestion to them is to change tack. Do not make the flyer the main focus. Make the surrounding shops and activities be the focus. Make the area more vibrant so that ppl will visit the "remote" areas. Charge a reasonable rate (SGD12 should entice ppl to try at least once). So we you can draw more ppl to the area, you have a higher chance of putting these ppl in the cabins. Moreover, if the area become vibrant and pulling a lot retail biz, the management will be sure to have greater revenue than just collecting ticket sales. I cite a good retail example - Jurong Point. No one will believe JP can be developed to what it is now when it just started out.

Hi Very Wise, very wise recommendation indeed. People go to Hong Kong or Macau not just because of its Disneyland or Casinos but also for its other attractions, vibrant community, etc. Moreover they can crossed over to Macau or Shenzhen etc.

You are the first person to offer a constructive idea about the Flyer. It should complement a visit to the mall where it is located. That is, people are attracted to shop and eat at the "mall" there and then go over for a ride at the flyer provided it is affordable priced as you suggest around S$12 plus.

Likewise, I think the Singapore casinos will not take off as after them, what else can the visitors do? Chinatown has lost its identity and Little India may soon go its path if the tourist promotion board starts to put its hands into it. Johor Bahru and Batam are not as attractive as Hong Kong and Shenzhen when visitors visit Macau. Can the two casinos survive on only Indonesia rich? American, South Korean and Japanese visitors got better attractions at home.

One forumer also mentioned about theme parks in the past opening in the evening and at night. Think present day scholars and businesses cannot think out of the box and always think that theme parks must only operate by day. Exception is the night safari thougth its tickets and f&b are not cheap.

why go to Flyer when you can have a nice meal at Equinox and enjoy a higher view... albeit more costly...

how much do you expect it to cost $10? go see a movie instead if that is all you want to spend.

i think you guys just don't get it these things (casino, theme parks) aren't built for HDB dwelling Singaporeans it is built for professional Singaporeans who have money to spend, foreign tourists and FTs living here (who will also take their out of country guests there too). That is were the money is; not in giving some ingrat Singaporean a cheap ticket who would then crowd up all the attractions.

I remember when i was living in Singapore there was an idea to lower the Sentosa charges (maybe just for one day a week?) so Singaporeans would go there more often. But they did not want to make it too cheap else then all the foreign workers (bangla construction workers, pinoy maids, ...) would go there to hang out too instead of meeting Orchard road and spoil the day for Singaporeans. so they decided on a price too high for a foreign worker. Well now that racists thinking has gone further and upper Singaporeans realize we don't need some complaining HDB family crowding up these new attractions so lets price it out of their budget. Congratulations!

Compare apples with apples i.e. compare Universal with Universal. Not Disneyland with Sentosa or Universal with Sentosa.

And you are right that people go to Anaheim because of Disneyland or Orlando because of Disney World. Similarly, people in this region will come to Singapore and Sentosa because of Universal.

I am sure that under the Universal franchise, Genting is going to have to play by the rules, and will also need to change their attractions regularly.

It is Sands who is in trouble - no famous franchise.
