where the heck is this?

look at how well built and symmetrical and well maintained those slums are.....if this was pinoy slums u will be looking at a bunch of horribly misshapened, tilted and wobbling, looking like its designed by a architect who just drank 4 tequilas, squashed cereal boxes stacked upon each other, surrounded by a pool of greenish algae water.

besides this is the 1950s......well built slums like this are considered luxurious landed property, mind u vietnamese were still living in grass and wooden huts in the 1970s and they probably still are today.

that spirit of volunteerism and service for others is no longer an attribute well preserved for good

In a rapidly changing world with rapidly changing needs, our psyche has evolved concurrently to suit the demands of our surroundings. As much as our society changes, our innate human spirit shouldn't give in and give way to the external demands even as alluring as it may seem or however convenient it may be.

There is still a need to hold on to something valuable in us and altruism shouldn't go the way of the Dodo. Compassion, it has to come from the heart and not a make-believe, it is not to be quantified nor qualified as this act of quantification and qualification nullifies the act of compassion almost instantaneously.

How do we teach compassion? We can't, for it is a simple act of kindness which transcends words and language, it can only be seen and replicated. Heartfelt gratitude and paying it forward is the only way to go about teaching compassion. No reward nor recompense required.

Would we become a compassionate society one final day? :(:(:(

Compassion, kindness, empathy, consideraton...............................

Sigh.................... all these traits have been replaced by materialism and "pragmatism" (simply another word for materialism).

In SG society, the primary influence is from who someone describes with deference and subservience as "Old Man".

You look at their arguments, all the terms like "making money. businesses, profiteering, cost savings, blah blah blah" keep getting repeated.

Another reminder for all sinkies: If we think something is right, we should just do it. Don't bother whether the government (or anyone else) says do it or don't do it and either follow them blindly or go against them just as blindly. Be kind and considerate to others who are not your family members or cronies as well.
