Why Orchard Road will never flood…

By Fong Foong Mei

Well, almost never.

For a flood to hit anywhere in Singapore, it takes a combination of high tides and about 100mm of rainfall within an hour.

And Orchard Road is protected by its mighty rain drain - the Stamford Canal.

Thanks to it, shoppers haven't had to slosh through waist-deep waters since 1960s.

But what makes a good drain?

According to a Ministry of Environment (ENV) spokesman, it's the flow capacity of a drain and not its storage capacity.

In other words, it isn't the size of the boat that matters, but the motion of the ocean.

And Orchard Road's supersucker had plenty of that.

It can empty an Olympic-sized pool before your cup of latte has time to cool.

It's very handy around this time, with La Nina is expected to bring about more wet days in the next two months.

La Nina is the weather phenomenon responsible for the heavier rains and cooler temperatures around the region.

Already, it has increased rainfall by 25 to 30 percent this year, noted a Meteorological Service spokesman.

Singapore's worst ever flood happened in 1978 when 512 mm fell in 24 hours.

Seven people died in that flood.

To prevent such disasters from recurring, the Government has spent some $1.1 billion since 1984 on about 800 km of drains all over Singapore.

How can you do your bit to avoid doing your shopping in sampans?

Simple. Just don't chuck your rubbish in the drains. Let the rain drains do their work, and go with the flow.

Man, another 50 years had passed us already ?

Thought it was just a couple of months ago that an idiot said these occurances are once every 50 years only ?

O.K lah.

Mini star Ya-the-cob now says it's no more than 2 times in 50 yrs lah!

O.K? Happy?

He still manintains that it is not prudent to spend so much on drainage works to counter an event that happen twice in 50 yrs lah! But it is prudent to keep increasing his salary lah!:D

HAPPY?

Sinkies accepts any crap, coming from any million dollar paid carp hole!

Anyone know why the MRT station don't get flooded? What about all those shopping centres and department stores that have below ground space? How come no news on them? The shop girls must be bailing water like crazy.

Must be poor drainage due to those MRT digging. Really world class govt!

LARGE stretches of Stevens, Evans and Bukit Timah Road, as well as
Orchard Road were submerged in floodwaters on Wednesday morning following
heavy downpour, forcing traffic to a crawl in the areas.
Two lanes of Stevens and Evans Road were impassable to traffic,
with floodwaters reaching almost half a metre deep.
Over at Serene Centre in Bukit Timah area, the shop-fronts were flooded,
aggravated by nearby construction works, which turned the area into a muddy pool.
The common areas in front of Ion Orchard and Ngee Ann City were also ankle deep in floodwaters.
If you know of other flooded areas, send photos and details to

Many areas in the shopping district were flooded this morning around 9.20am. Large stretches of Evan, Stevens and Bukit Timah Road were flooding as well according to an online Straits Times report.

Traffic was impassable at some parts of Stevens and Evans Road as floodwaters went as high as half a metre, the report said. It also mentioned that shopfronts at Serene Centre, Bukit Timah, were affected by the floods.

AsiaOne reader "Beanie975" said in all the years they've worked at their office in town, it is the first time they have seen floods of this magnitude.

When contacted, a security guard from Palais Renaissance said that the flood behind Orchard Towers along Claymore Road has since subsided.

Pictures posted on Twitter show the basement of Lucky Plaza flooded by rainwater.

This is hardly Swiss standard, but well, at least it's been raining extremely heavily recently which is a good thing.

Either the urban landscape is badly planned or the rains are unusually intense.

When heaving rain meet the spring tide, there's bound to be flood. If the flood had happened on moday '3rd day of the lunar calender it would have been much worse"
