<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->A CONSTRUCTION worker, who rose to become the boss of two building firms within seven years, wanted so desperately to become a Permanent Resident (PR), he broke the rules.
Lin Shuliang was on Wednesday jailed for two weeks for lying about his educational qualifications in his applications.
The 38-year-old Chinese national had pleaded guilty on June 1.
A district court heard that he had claimed to have graduated from the Fuqing San Shan Middle School in Fujian province in China.
He even attached his school-leaving certificate but a check by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) revealed it was a fake.
The judge could have fined him up to $4,000 or jailed him for up to a year or imposed a fine and a jail term. Lin is appealing against the sentence.
His lawyer Chia Boon Teck had earlier asked District Judge Jasbendar Kaur not to impose a jail term as Lin was very worried that the chances of being repatriated would be much higher if he receives a jail sentence than if he was just fined.
'As Lin is the only person with full control of the operations, he would be forced to wind up his successful business if he is jailed for a long period or repatriated,' said the lawyer.
One of his two companies, Ying Cheng Construction, generated a net profit in excess of $1 million in the last fiscal year, the lawyer added.
Lin is currently involved as a sub-contractor in 10 projects. These include the Singapore Art School and the building of several condominiums and residencies.

This shows how resourceful these people are

This guy has low education, comes to a foreign country and makes $1 million a year

Meanwhile, Singaporean youth with lots of energy and high education only keeps whining and begging for government nanny to help

Please let us open our doors to more PRCs, they are so enterprising

We should ask this guy to give lecture at our universities to teach our students how to be more enterprising

Upgrade the quality of our stock, let's open ourselves to more PRCs

Looks typical of the kind without any regard for the law. Do anything to make money. The construction services sector is not an innovative industry - to win bids, they qjuote low, the only way to go low in this part of the woods is to pay low; I call that exploitation.

Society should never use one's ability to amass profits as a yardstick for success and from that determine whether that person belongs in society or not. This chap should go back to Tiongkok and compete with people who are just as unscrupulous as himself, in an environment where ethics are scoffed at. Let him flourish in Sg, and more will join him.

One million dollars profit? Money doesn't buy breeding. This guy is a liar.

- Cheating is resourceful?

- It's more like as this guy lectures at our unis teaching our students how to lie.

- Trimming toe nails in publc transport and spitting fish bones onto a dining table helps upgrade the stock? I think that's downgrade.

Hahaha! Look, we might all have chinese ancestry, but some of us weren't fucked by Mao.

Cheers!

This guy has probably been exploiting his own countrymen (not that Singapore has done much better on this score). It is this widespread Chinese trait of infighting that I feel very sad about. If the Chinese had been exploiting other races rather than their own people, Chinese instead of English, would have been the dominant language today.

Shame on you for praising this guy.

What happened to LKY theory of University graduates marrying a university graduates...they should marry a "AH TIONG" from China, who may not even go pass High school...and produce brilliant children, by the track loads...

What on earth do we, need to slog so hard for, all we need is intelligence, ingenunity & hard work....and you can make 1 million a year..of course not forgetiing, making slaves of your own country men & women working for you......that is the road to success, forget Bsc Phd..etc...

You are spot on. Our construction industry has probably pulled our productivity index down by using cheap foreign labours through exploitation.

What we need is through better use of technologies and innovative solutions to increase our productivity and solve our problems, not cut costs through unscrupulous means so as to increase profits.

Singapore can do without his contribution lah. Construction business is a no- brainer - just lie and cheat yr way thru, undercut others to grab market share, bully banglas, leave them to die in drains if they are injured so as to avoid paying workmen's compensation..

Singapore must uphold the sentence and repatriate him back to where he belongs.

No place for scruffy riff-raffs and boorish scumbags in Singapore.

BUTTTTT...................That needs creativity.............

The easy way out is to depress wages by employing cheap foreign labour, which is aided by the PAP govt's policy of opening the floodgate for foreigners to come in.

Creativity? That needs a lot of thinking out of the box. Since there is an easy way, businessmen will take the easy route.
