NZ is the new gold standard. Everything opening up this Thursday - Masks not encouraged

Kiwiland famous for Lord of The Ring filming location and sheep , lots of sheep
That's about it
Most Kiwis went to Aussieland to work and settle down

NZ very nice. I was there in 1999. Visited Christchurch and North Island. Rotorua.

Those geothermal pools are way prettier and more colorful than those in Yellowstone National Park in USA.

New Zealand had a number of advantages, most obviously its isolation and sea borders. We did some things right, in banning direct flights to China early. Fine weather may have played a part, or our cities being less densely populated, or even a low public transport usage rate. Even the epidemiologists admit that luck probably had something to do with it too.

Yet when this episode is finally over, when humanity returns to whatever passes for normal life on the other side of this, it will be manifestly obvious that the single most powerful contribution to the apparent success of our fight against Covid-19 was communication. What we have witnessed over the past two months has been a communications masterclass – a multifaceted, stunningly effective campaign which unified a nation into complying with unprecedented restrictions with near total obedience.

It utilised a variety of techniques – as ancient as political speech, as modern as hyper-targeted social media advertising – to produce a level of uniform behaviour unimaginable in a western-style democracy. As we count down the hours to today's announcement, it seems an apt time to look back over this extraordinary period, and contemplate the tools deployed, and what that deployment achieved.

Am sure Leongsam will have something to say on this.
Actually he already did. He seems to like undermining and "meh-ing" the great work done by Jacinda (yep she's a rock star!) and her government. Everyone in the world is impressed with NZ. And also Taiwan. With good reason!

The major cities and suburbs in NZ are cramped with people too, but I agree they are nowhere near the density here.

Lake Taupo is smaller than Singapore.
In my day to day business in Auckland I seldom have to sit within 2 metres of anyone else. That's how cramped it is compared to Singapore.

Lake Taupo is 620 sq metres. Singapore's is 581sq metres but has cheated by adding more land :)

Is NZ now open to foreign tourists from all countries?

No and because they are trying to stamp out the virus rather than just ride the wave they won't be opening the border until it is "safe".

In the meantime the country will die a natural death because a quarter of NZ's GDP depend on tourism. Without tourists and with the demand for other products down I feel sorry for the average kiwi. Of course for the wealthy this is an excellent time to make a killing. The rich will get richer and irony is that this is happening under a left wing liberal government.

I'm not undermining her. She made a decision to go into lockdown and she did it far later than a lot of other countries. However because NZ is sparsely populated it is far easier to contact trace and far harder for the virus to spread. What she did therefore worked.

However what she should have done was to go the way of the Swedish. There would have been more cases and more deaths in the short term but for a country that depends so much on Tourism it would have enabled NZ to open its borders again far earlier and this would have kept the tourism industry afloat.

Right now she has destroyed NZ's main source of foreign exchange in exchange for the lives of a bunch of 80+ year old half dead residents of rest homes.

You can keep an enemy out of your home by barricading yourself within and putting up very strong defenses. However unless you have a way of obtaining food and water the enemy just has to wait outside long enough and everyone at home will starve to death.

It would be far better to take on the enemy. There may be casualties but if victory is secured the outcome is a lot better for the long term.

She did what a responsible government would do to protect lives, prevent deaths as far as possible. Of course it doesn't help that the WHO lauded China's lockdown approach which was subsequently adopted by almost every country.

Sweden is radical and their government knows their people are mostly disciplined and would support their move. Their chief epidemiologist is given authority, given a high profile, and has clout. In most other countries, politicians run the show. And a possible high dead rate, going against WHO and messing up, etc are bad for their re-election chances. Hence one can't really blame countries that support lockdowns.

A tanked economy is even worse when it comes to re election. People have short memories. Winston Churchill saved Britain but was voted out immediately after the war was over.

He was voted out mainly because he was hawkish and too war-like. The public were still wary, since the war had just ended. Being peacetime, they didn't need such a leader anymore.

Same thing could happen to NZ labor party. Very good for touchy, feely stuff like terrorist attacks and being loving and caring during covid-19 but come election time it's always all about the economy.

I do prefer labor in power though because a bad economy and a longer quarantine will mean that NZ remains tourist free for longer.

I personally do not want a good economy in NZ but I don't speak for most.
