How about OCS? Already we have the shortest OCS course amongst all countries.
No need OCS lah, so, all NS men just serve to maximum Specialist Level, which equates to only 13 year cycles.
For those who want to go to OCS, perhaps they can consider Military Universities, whereby it is a 3 year course, and these course perhaps could have Faculties of Engineering (Mechanical, Electronics, Communications, Applied Science, Aerospace) , Philosophy, Metaphysics, Politics, Management, Leadership, etc.
Singapore's OCS can be converted into a 黄埔军校, Sandhurst, or Westpoint of Singapore.
During that 3 years course, these Cadets, could have their Tri-service Term in the first year, the Service Term in the 2nd year, and the Professional Term in the 3rd year, like in any university.
And their degrees are accredited in local universities like NTU or NUS.
So, only matured, educated graduates of OCS can be deployed as officers in units for period of 1 year maximum (to match the newly PASSED OUT PARADE BMT Private / Private First Class) So that the Officers & Men can ORD together, forming a espirit de corp.
For people who want to become officers, they have to be selected from BMT. Making officer's service to be 3 Months BMT + 3 years OCS + 1 year National Service = 4 Years and 3 Months.
As for people who serve as men from ranks of SGT to Private, their total service term is 1 Year and 3 Months. If they choose to go for University, they will see their friends who are from OCS in the timezone when they graduate. If their university course is 3 years.
Those who go to OCS will have their education sponsored by the military, motivating all NS men to do their best to get into OCS, forming up a committed, and credible NS men. For those who do not want to give their best, they have to pay the price of university fees.
This is something I've thought about over the years, as it is true that Singapore's OCS is too short to train up any credible Officers... just look at our Ex-Chief of Staff as MP... a classic Hokkien Peng.
The advantage is that, with OCS that gives accredited degrees, the Officers are always at least 3 years older than their men, and they are equipped with Leadership, Management & Organization Skills, Expert in Weaponry, Command and Control, Vehicles etc, they can be the trainer of their own Platoon, and they can select their own SGT to build up a Espirit De Corp. After their 1 year National Service, they can work in any Private Sector with their Accredited Degrees.
