Yeah, the BG that only have Sentosa Cable Car tragedy to his credit and who can't shoot straight with a rifle.

Even in that episode, I remember it was more than 6 hrs b4 anybody has a plan what to do. He was brought in only when everything seemed to be going safely and the rescue plan looked ok, but not sooner, lest he botched up and screwed up his future PM plans.

To cut a long story short, it was a NZ heli pilot that had the skills to evcuate those stranded. SAF could not.

When the hotel new world collapsed, the 2nd son became head of the army unit in charge and got a medal.

Yup. Both sons took credit for what others risked their lives and reputations to do.

Hallelujah!

Dear Scroo

Strange though :_)) Because in the Army the current generation of CDF's and COA's have tended very much to have special forces background :_)). I do agree that the decision not to storm is a senior leadership or political decision, however the high risk nature of such ops and the high degree of expertise and training required before hand needs more than a paper pushing scholar. The previous STAR commander was I believe imported and a British ex SAS man. STAR training is intense and their equipment top notch for a demanding mission their equivalent is GSG9 or GIGN or the FBI HRT.

If the current PC let and set up the unit then he can be respected, if the guy just help in setting it up and writing the papers to set it up , then he just might be another paper pushing scholar.

Really good scholars tend to go over to admin service. Lock Wai Han, an acknowledged competent investigator and former CID director left to become deputy sec of MTI.

Again, from school days assessment, Wai Han, though in my opinion, was not paricularly "outstanding", had definitely more substance compared with Joo Hee.

Come to think of it, the "outstanding" ones are not in public service :rolleyes:

STAR is nothing to do with GSG9 or its equivalent etc. That will be done by SOF. All hostage situation involving things such as airlines, potential mass casualty, counter terrorism etc. STAR is meant for gunman holding his girlfried hostage in HDB flat, crazy bugger holding a knife to the throat of Ah Soh in SBS bus. Nothing political. They also use STAR when they are plan to arrest a Sr Police Officer or Detective who is given a personal issue firearm at his home if he is going to be charged for a crfime. They also arrested Dave Teo, the blur NS who took a rifle out of camp and went to Orchard Cineleisure

I think you have mistaken the British Officer as one who is seconded to be IC and 2nd IC of Gurkha Contingent. The first secondee from SAS was Bill Niven who was part of the Iranian Embassy assault team. I can assure you that GC can take out both STAR and SOF. The current one is Ross Forman. Old man's final insurance. They however send STAR officer for training to GSG9 more as a junket.

In fact GSG9 and SAS tend to train our SOF. Not the STAR. The first commander of STAR was an inspector known for his guts but not for his paper work.

Wai Han is miles ahead of Ng. Noted for his investigative skills. Only bad habit is niteclubbing and drinks. Has been absorbed into Admin Service.

Dear Scroo

Strange knew some NUD/SOF types and they do have a decent opinion of STAR and the level of its training. The Gurkha's are a different kettle of fish, fit and can run the whole day and night with a full pack without falling down. more like highly trained and fit light infantry, but special forces missions are currently more complex than that with greater levels of technical skill and brain power.

actually he was the original one earmarked but as you said, he unfortunately loves socialising a bit too much...funny though this same indulgence was not a problem for Tjong Yik Ming ( during his undergrad days in Ozland, he really lived it up )...Another one originally in the running was Aubeck Kam but he too has been absorbed into the Admin Service. A future CP is Lau Peet Ming currently A Div Cmdr..
