New iPhone 12 Exclusive Reveals Stunning Apple Design Decisions
Gordon KellySenior Contributor Consumer Tech

Apple’s iPhone 12 range is officially delayed, but it is the company’s controversial design decisions which are the real talking point, and now new leaks have revealed what might just be the biggest of all.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro concept render EVERYTHINGAPPLEPRO

Working together, popular YouTuber Filip Koroy (aka EverythingApplePro) and prolific leaker Max Weinbach, have revealed that Apple has decided to differentiate the iPhone 12 Pro Max from other iPhone 12 models and that means you will have to go big (and expensive) for the best features in 2020.

“The 6.7-inch mammoth iPhone [12 Pro Max] will truly be considered a flagship this year,” states Koroy. “It will have the best display and best cameras... The [iPhone] 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max really were the same devices, the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will be more differentiated.”

Koroy doesn’t break down these differences, but recent leaks have speculated that the iPhone 12 Pro Max may be the only new iPhone to sport Apple’s exciting new LiDAR camera. Apple’s decision to downgrade the batteries in the new iPhones will also impact the iPhone 12 Pro Max model least, which may also mean it's the only model to get a 120Hz ProMotion display, despite fears all models will miss out.

But the big problem is not everyone wants a 6.7-inch smartphone, and Koroy explains that the range’s edgy new design is only likely to strengthen those feelings:

“Max Weinbach’s source, who has had hands-on time with the 6.7[-inch iPhone] 12 Pro Max model, is saying that it’s quite uncomfortable [to hold]. The bigger the size gets, the more it digs into your palm and, depending on the size of your hands, it may be a problem. Cases could alleviate this, but it definitely is a very slick and sharp piece of hardware.”

960x0.jpg

Angular edges on the iPhone 12 Pro Max Vs the rounded edges of the iPhone 11 Pro Max EVERYTHINGAPPLEPRO

The other uncomfortable aspect to the iPhone 12 Pro Max is its price. Leaks earlier this month revealed increases for every new model, with the iPhone 12 Pro Max now starting at $1,199.

Is this price hike deserved? Yes, and no. The primary driver behind it is the inclusion of an expensive 5G mmWave modem that has also seen rivals push prices sky high. That said, Apple is also cutting cuts with the iPhone 12 line-up. Aside from the downgraded batteries and their knock-on impact for 120Hz displays, Apple will also remove both the wall charger and EarPods from the box. This has clear environmental benefits, but may not sit well with customers in conjunction with the price increase.

All of which means the iPhone 12 range is likely to be one of Apple’s most polarizing iPhone releases to date. My tip: the cheapest model looks the best.

I have found hardly any difference between my 6 year old iPhone SE and the latest model. Both take crap images and the apps installed run the same way.

I tried out my friend's top of the line iPhone 11 with 3 lenses and the images are crap too. A 10 year old point and shoot digital camera takes better pictures.

Apple Accident Confirms New iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro Releases
Gordon KellySenior Contributor Consumer Tech

Almost every detail about the iPhone 12 line-up has leaked, from their external redesign to their increased prices, and now an accident in Apple’s supply chain has confirmed the company’s release strategy.

Stickers for Apple’s official iPhone 12 silicone cases have been photographed by reliable leaker DuanRui, revealing the company’s naming strategy for the range: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and the all-new iPhone 12 mini. But that’s only half the story.

First, the branding, which is both a surprise and a relief. It is a surprise because multiple leaks have suggested the iPhone 11’s successor would be renamed iPhone 12 Max or iPhone 12 Plus with the new 5.4-inch model, taking on the iPhone 12 name. This would have caused untold confusion and, with Apple already having Mac mini and iPad mini brands, an iPhone 12 mini expands the iPhone range in a simple and intuitive way.

Second, the design. The case stickers reveal that Apple will sell just three silicon cases with the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro sharing the same case. While the displays align, the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 were noticeably thicker than the iPhone XS and iPhone 11. For the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro to fit in the same case means this is no longer the, well, case.

960x0.jpg

Apple iPhone 12 range renders based on multiple images EVERYTHINGAPPLEPRO

The primary reason behind this is likely to be the range’s move to OLED. Both the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 used cheaper, low resolution LCD panels, but in 2020 every iPhone 12 model has stepped up to OLED, which is thinner, more power efficient and has greater contrast levels. For Apple (and third party case makers), this also makes case manufacturing a lot simpler.

But smart branding and accessorizing alone can’t cover up growing concerns about the iPhone 12 range. Underwhelming performance, smaller batteries, the same large notch and significant price increases have all been unearthed in recent weeks and Apple’s highlights of a boxy new design, 3D camera and 5G connectivity may not be enough to set potential customers’ hearts racing.

Either way, we’ll know soon enough. The iPhone 12 release date is fast approaching.

Everything we know about the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
Chance Miller - Sep. 28th 2020 12:59 pm PT

iPhone-12-0006-1.jpg

This fall is shaping up to be a busy one for the iPhone. Apple is rumored to be preparing four different iPhone 12 variants set for release in as early as October. Read on as we round up all of the specs, features, and design details that we know about the iPhone 12 so far.

iPhone 12 design

If you find yourself longing for the days of the iPhone 4, 2020 might be the year for you. We expect the iPhone 12 to mark the return to slab-sided design, with reports suggesting that the device will heavily resemble the iPhone 4. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said this will come as part of a significant chassis redesign for the iPhone 12.

Kuo believes that the iPhone 12 will still feature curved glass edges around the display, like the iPhone 11. The analyst has referenced 2/2.5D glass in his various reporting on the 2020 iPhone lineup. Currently, the iPhone 11 Pro features a blended design between the glass of the display and the stainless steel edges. This differs from the iPhone 4, which was completely squared-off around the sides.

A supply chain report has also suggested that the iPhone 12 lineup will be thinner than the iPhone 11, with the largest iPhone 12 model coming in at 7.4mm thick. That’s around 10% thinner than the 8.1mm iPhone 11 Pro Max. Whether or not the rest of the iPhone 12 lineup will be slimmer remains to be seen.

Apple’s return to a boxier industrial design theme with the iPhone 4 makes sense when you consider the design of the iPad Pro. In 2018, Apple redesigned the iPad Pro with a flat-sided body. This redesign has been very well-received by users, so it’s not surprising to see it inspire the iPhone 12.

Here’s a look at what the iPhone 12 might look like in dummy form:

iphone-12-cad-unlikely-1.jpg

As you can see, in those dummy units, the front-side of the iPhone 12 is expected to look nearly identical to the iPhone 11. There is, however, expected to be one change: a smaller notch. While Apple isn’t expected to remove the notch altogether, reports from Bloomberg and other sources have indicated that Apple will reduce the notch size this year.

But while Apple is planning four new iPhone 12 models for 2020, a report from Bloomberg suggested that the new flat-edged design might only come to the iPhone 12 Pro models at the high-end. Again, this would make sense given what we’ve seen in the iPad lineup: the low-cost iPad has gone largely unchanged, while the iPad Pro features the latest and greatest design.

iphone-12-iphone-4-comparison.jpg

YouTuber MKBHD has also offered one of the clearest looks yet at the iPhone 12 design, going hands-on with all three different sizes. MKBHD also simulated what iOS 14 will look like on the new iPhone 12 design, and showcased how the design is similar to the iPhone 4.

While we have a general idea of what the iPhone 12 will look like, additional rumors will likely shed more light on additional details as the fall release approaches.

Display

For the first time ever, the entirety of Apple’s flagship iPhone lineup will sport OLED display technology this year. All four iPhone 12 models are expected to feature OLED screens, including the successor to the LCD-equipped iPhone 11.

What about display sizing? Reports suggest that Apple will shift the lineup slightly this year compared to the iPhone 11. Here’s what we know so far:

- One iPhone 12 model with a 5.4-inch OLED display
- Two iPhone 12 models with a 6.1-inch OLED displays
- One iPhone 12 model with a 6.7-inch OLED display

iphone-x-oled.jpg

This means the iPhone 12 collection will include the smallest iPhone to ever feature the edge-to-edge display introduced with the iPhone 12, as well as the largest iPhone ever. Reports say that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 model will have a height that is “midway between the iPhone SE and iPhone 8,” while the 6.1-inch version will be midway between the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. The 6.7-inch iPhone 12 will be “slightly taller than the iPhone 11 Pro Max.”

Other than OLED, this year’s iPhones are also rumored to feature 120Hz high refresh rate “ProMotion” displays. iPhones to date have included 60Hz displays, but Apple introduced 120Hz refresh rates to the iPad lineup in 2017. The refresh rate doubling dramatically improves the responsiveness of the user experience with gestures more quickly being translated into on-screen motion.

All in all, this may sound confusing, but the gist is: one smaller iPhone 12 mini, two iPhone 12 models the same size as the iPhone 11, and one larger.

iPhone 12 camera

Other than screen size, the biggest differentiator between the iPhone 12 models will be camera technology. Essentially, Apple is planning two iPhones with dual-lens camera systems and two iPhones with triple-lens camera systems.

The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 will feature two cameras on the back. This will likely consist of ultra-wide and wide-angle lenses. The same setup is expected on the lower-end 6.1-inch iPhone 12.

iPhone-11-Review-iphone-11-pro-tri-camera.jpg

Things get a bit more interesting with the two high-end iPhone 12 models. Here, we expect a triple-lens camera system that is likely similar to the iPhone 11 Pro: wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto. But, these two iPhone models are also expected to feature a new time-of-flight 3D sensor.

What does this mean? A time-of-flight (ToF) sensor is similar to the infrared TrueDepth camera system used on the front-side of iPhones for Face ID. Adding a ToF 3D-sensing system to the back camera would enable higher-fidelity 3D photo captures, potentially opening up new augmented reality opportunities. The ToF sensor would also be more powerful and work at longer distances than the TrueDepth system due to its laser-powered technology.

In addition to augmented reality features, this ToF sensor could also improve things that rely on depth data, such as Portrait mode. Findings within iOS 14 by 9to5Mac have also confirmed that only the iPhone 12 Pro will add the new ToF sensor.

LiDAR-Scanner-iPad-Pro-2020.jpg

This all makes a lot of sense when you look at the 2020 iPad Pro refresh, which brought a new LiDAR Scanner for the first time. The LiDAR Scanner focuses on improvements to AR capabilities. 9to5Mac has exclusively reported that Apple itself is developing a new augmented reality app for iOS 14 that could integrate with retail stores.

One of the biggest benefits for the iPhone 12 Pro’s LiDAR Scanner, however, will be that developers are better prepared to take advantage of it given the iPad Pro’s existing availability. A leaked image also recently provided a look at how Apple might redesign the camera bump to accommodate the new LiDAR Scanner.

In terms of software, the iPhone 12 models are expected to feature everything currently available on the iPhone 11, including Deep Fusion and Night mode. It also possible that Apple has more software image processing features planned for this year, especially to take advantage of the new ToF technology.

What about the front camera? We don’t know much yet, but there is certainly room for improvement from the iPhone 11. We’ll update when we learn more about the iPhone 12’s front-facing camera.

Power

apple-a14-chip.jpg

The iPhone 12 lineup is expected to feature the next iteration of Apple’s A-series processors, presumably called the A14.

According to a recent supply chain report, Apple’s partner TSMC is on schedule to start the production of the A14 processor using a new 5-nanometer process in Q2. The A13 was produced with a 7nm processor, so the A14 should be more power-efficient and faster, thanks to the 5nm process.

What kind of performance should you expect? Early estimates suggest that, when combined with the rumored 6GB of RAM, the A14 could make the iPhone 12 as powerful as the 15-inch MacBook Pro. Game performance could be boosted by upwards of 50% thanks to a special emphasis on multi-core performance.

These improvements are due mainly to the 5nm manufacturing process. You can read more details on the A14’s expected performance here.

Outside of the new A14 processor, the iPhone 12 could feature improved Face ID performance as well. Analysts from Barclays say that iPhone 12 lineup will include a “refreshed” Face ID system. What exactly the analysts mean by “refreshed” is unclear, but it could imply that Apple will upgrade the TrueDepth camera system used for Face ID with improved performance and other enhancements.

The iPhone 11 featured improved Face ID performance as well, but that was primarily due to changes in iOS 13 rather than hardware upgrades. This year, it looks like we might be in store for actual hardware improvements to boost Face ID recognition.

Connectivity

sprint-5G.jpg

Perhaps most notably of all, all four of the iPhone 12 models introduced this year are expected to feature 5G connectivity. Despite some initial reports to the contrary, all four are expected to include support for both versions of 5G: sub-6 GHz 5G and mmWave 5G.

Different carriers around the world are rolling out sub-6GHz and mmWave networks in different deployments and on different timelines. mmWave is the technology with more impressive gigabit-like speeds, but its range is much smaller. In comparison, sub-6GHz 5G rollouts in the United States typically achieve speeds in the 100-150 Mbps range.

All four of the models will reportedly feature support for both variations of 5G, which will be useful not only for users in the United States but also around the world, where 5G rollouts are different.

While Apple is in the process of developing its own in-house modems for iPhone, the iPhone 12 is likely to feature modems from Qualcomm.

What’s important to keep in mind, however, is that Apple supporting 5G is only half the story: it also needs to be available from carriers. Although the early rollout of mmWave 5G is underway, the extremely limited range means broader rollouts beyond major cities and high-density locations are farther away. If carriers botch the 5G rollout, then it won’t be nearly as notable for the iPhone 12 to have support.

iOS 14 + iPhone 12

The iPhone 12 is expected to be the first iPhone to ship with iOS 14 out of the box. Apple officially announced iOS 14 at WWDC 2020 this year, revealing new features such as widgets on the home screen, picture in picture, and more.

iOS 14 also adds a new App Library view for organizing all of your apps. Apps are automatically organized in the App Library, and you don’t have to keep all of the icons on your actual home screen view. iOS 14 also includes a new Translate application, which offers a complete translator that works with text and voice.

Other changes in iOS 14 include a redesigned Siri interface that doesn’t overtake the entire screen, as well as a new interface for incoming calls that also doesn’t take up the entire screen. You can see all of the new iOS 14 features in action right here.

iPhone 12 accessories

Lightning-to-USB-C-Braided-cable.png

In addition to the many changes coming to the iPhone 12 itself this year, Apple is also rumored to be changing the accessories that are included in the box. According to reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will not include the wired EarPods or the wall charging brick with the iPhone 12 this year.

For Apple, there are several benefits to this change. First off, removing the in-box charging brick and headphones will dramatically shrink the packaging size and thereby shipping costs. Kuo also suggests that it will help Apple offset the cost of the more expensive 5G components in this year’s iPhone 12. Finally, there are environmental benefits since many people simply don’t need any additional wall bricks.

On the flip side, perhaps to help make up for the lack of earbuds and the wall brick, Apple will reportedly include a higher-end Lightning cable in the box with the iPhone 12. A rumor suggests that the iPhone 12 will come with a new braided Lightning to USB-C cable in the box. This cable would be more durable than the classic Lightning cable, and it would mean that even the non-Pro iPhone 12 models would include a USB-C cable.

iPhone 12: Naming, pricing, and release

Screen-Shot-2019-12-05-at-10.14.06-AM-2.png

Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction graphic for the 2020 iPhones

All current evidence points to this year’s iPhone being called the iPhone 12. This makes sense given the expected redesign, which makes it unlikely that Apple will make 2020 an “S” year for iPhone upgrades.

A pair of recent leaks have offered details on how Apple might name the iPhone 12 lineup across all four models. The very reliable leaker L0vetodream has reported that Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup will be branded as follows:

- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max

Much like naming, the pricing of unreleased iPhone models is generally hard to predict. Apple set a precedent in 2019 by dropping the entry-level iPhone 11 price to $699, but whether or not that continues remains to be seen.

And last but not least, details on the iPhone 12’s release date. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused delays in the development process for Apple, and the company is said to be “scrambling” to prevent pushing back release dates. Apple is also reportedly concerned about potential economic uncertainty, and that there might not be enough demand for high-end iPhones this fall.

Flagship iPhone models usually launch around September, with some models shipping in October, such as the iPhone XR in 2018, and the iPhone X in November of 2019. In a surprising move, Apple has confirmed that the release of the 2020 iPhone lineup will be later than originally expected. During the company’s Q3 2020 earnings call, Apple CFO Luca Maestri addressed the fact that the iPhone 12 will be released “a few weeks” later than the iPhone 11 was released in 2019.

While covering what to expect from Apple during the company’s fiscal Q4 2020, Maestri explained that Apple began selling new iPhones in September of 2019. This year, Maestri says Apple currently expects the new iPhones to come several weeks later. “As you know, last year we started selling iPhones in late September,” Maestri said during the call. “This year, we expect supply to be available a few weeks later.”

The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro were released on September 20 last year. A three-week delay this year would mean the iPhone 12 lineup could be released in mid-October at the earliest. It’s also possible that Apple staggers the iPhone 12 debut across all of October and November.

Finally, Apple held an event on September 15 – but the iPhone 12 was not included. Instead, this event focused on Apple’s newest Apple Watch and iPad hardware, as well as the announcement of the Apple One services bundle, a new Fitness+ service, and iOS 14 release date information. The lack of an iPhone 12 mention during the September event all-but-guarantees that the iPhone will be announced sometime in October instead.

What do you think of the rumors we’ve seen so far about this year’s iPhone lineup? What do you think we can expect in terms of naming and pricing? Let us know down in the comments!

Apple’s main iPhone manufacturer in China is running 24 hours a day to produce the new iPhone 12, cancelling workers’ holidays and introducing mandatory overtime with juicy bonuses for longer-serving staff, according to employees, recruitment ads and local media.

The all-hands-on-deck approach at Foxconn’s massive Zhengzhou factory reflects China’s resilient manufacturing capabilities and deep connection between the Chinese and US economies, despite a push from Washington for decoupling.

China’s quick recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, especially on the production side of the economy, is expected to help it continue its central position in global value chains, even though the virus has renewed talk about the dangers of supply chain dependence on the world’s second largest economy.

Foxconn, which is owned by Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry, resumed production at the plant in Henan province in February.

Employee Wang Guofeng said overtime work had increased since summer and most workers were allowed to take only four days off per month.

“You can earn 5,000 yuan to 6,000 yuan (US$880) per month, and if you work at the factory for more than 90 days, there’s a handsome amount of special pay,” said the 33-year-old who has worked at the factory for over four years.

Another employee surnamed Ma said the company had started night shifts, with production lines running 24 hours a day.

“We have been kept so busy for the past weeks because of the iPhone 12,” Ma said, referring to the new model that is expected to be unveiled next month.

The factory’s iPhone assembly unit has offered a 10,000 yuan bonus for any worker who started after September 18, stays for at least 90 days and works at least 55 days, according to one recruitment ad. The bonus was 8,500 yuan for people who joined after September 26.

Current staff can also pocket 500 yuan for referring a new worker.

Many employees have been asked to cancel upcoming holidays around the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day that fall this week to ensure timely delivery of the new iPhone, according to another worker who declined to be named.

“Some people are willing to do so because according to Chinese labour law the salary triples on the first three days [of the Mid-Autumn Festival],” the worker said.

Local authorities have also ensured smooth operations by helping the factory’s 200,000 people resume work as quickly as possible after the pandemic, the Henan Daily reported last month. In June alone, exports from the Foxconn factory surged 50.6 per cent from a year earlier, the newspaper reported.

Apple is expected to announce four new iPhone 12 models in October, which will be the first with 5G capabilities, according to media reports.

Apple shipped 45.1 million iPhones globally in the second quarter of this year, 25 per cent more than in the same period last year, even though global smartphone shipments plunged 14 per cent in the period, according to Canalys, a consultancy.

New Apple Leak Reveals iPhone 12 Design Shock
Gordon Kelly Consumer Tech

For many, the most controversial thing about Apple’s iPhone 12 range is the mystery surrounding their launch date, but new leaks have revealed a much bigger concern.

960x0.jpg

iPhone 12 Pro Max concept render EVERYTHINGAPPLEPRO

Earlier this week, popular YouTuber Filip Koroy (aka EverythingApplePro) and prolific leaker Max Weinbach combined to reveal Apple is set to give the iPhone 12 Pro Max significantly more features than the iPhone 12 Pro. The pair didn’t break down these differences, but now MacRumors has and you might be in trouble if you don’t like very big phones.

The site reveals the massive 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max may get display, camera and connectivity advantages over the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro. Bringing together multiple sources, MacRumors reports that the bigger phone could exclusively feature Apple’s new 3D mapping LiDAR camera, a 120Hz ProMotion display (this divides sources) and be the only iPhone 12 model to have mmWave, the fastest version of 5G.

On the flipside, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is said to be “among the last models to become available” with the all-new iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 expected to arrive earlier, and possibly the iPhone 12 Pro as well. The tallies with multiple leaks even with their announcement seemingly just two weeks away.

960x0.jpg

Right to left: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro - renders based on ... [+] EVERYTHINGAPPLEPRO

Of course, the problem here is not only size. Yes, many iPhone fans do not want a 6.7-inch smartphone, but the bigger issue here is the return to treating more pocketable iPhones as second class citizens. That’s plausible for the non-Pro models, but a “Pro” should always fit that moniker and it would be a shocking backwards step for a company which has enjoyed so much success in giving feature parity to both the iPhone XS and iPhone 11 lines.

Needless to say, if the leaks are right, Apple’s design decision is also going to hit upgraders in the pocket, with the company set to increase prices across the range, while also cutting costs by removing EarPods and the wall charger, due to the high cost of 5G modems. This is particularly hard to swallow when the company is also downgrading iPhone 12 batteries compared to their predecessors.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, 5G is not worth the price premium in 2020 and, with that in mind, the best next-generation iPhone looks set to be the one Apple will release early next year.

This is a stupid and brainless comparison against a digital CAMERA and a in built phone camera, had in built phone cameras be better than digital cam with the likes of DSLR, all can manufacturers out of business and journalist won’t use real Cams and use phone instead.

You're not going to take your digital camera with you all the time.

In fact, the advancements in smartphone photography was a good reason why sales of entry level point-and-shoot cameras dropped.

iPhone 12 uses the 5nm A14 chip, built by TSMC of the wonderful country Taiwan. Expect a big improvement in battery life.

Android phones will have to wait till next year: Snapdragon 875, to get that 5nm goodness. But count out Samsung phones in Sinkieland, they'll use the crappy Exynos chip.

iPhone 12 leak just revealed how it will destroy all Android phones

Leaked benchmark results for the A14 Bionic tease the mighty power of the iPhone 12

NSjDb8Q988u8D4c5uaRN3J-1024-80.jpg

Each generation of new Apple mobile chip brings about a solid performance improvement, and it looks like the A14 Bionic will be no different. In fact, the iPhone 12 should once again be the fastest phone on the planet.

The chip, which is set to power the new iPad Air 2020 as well as the iPhone 12, has just made its benchmarking debut, shared by established leaker Ice Universe on Twitter.

Twitter’s cropping cuts off key information there, but if you expand the picture you’ll see this test was taken in Geekbench 5 on the iPad. The numbers are the key thing, with a single-core score of 1,583 and a multi-core result of 4,198.

OxAjTKM.png

For context, iPhone 11 Pro scored scored 1,337 on the single-core portion of the test and 3,509. So the iPhone 12 could be 18% faster on the single core and nearly 20% faster on multi-core.

Assuming the iPhone 12 performs as well as the new iPad Air, it would blow away all Android phones. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which is powered by the latest Snapdragon 865 Plus chip, scored 985 and 3,294 on Geekbench 5. That would make the A14 Bionic 60% faster on the single-core test and 27% faster on multi-core.

Against the current iPad Air, the A14 Bionic results are even more impressive and seems to confirm Apple’s pitch at the launch event that the new iPad would be 40% faster than the previous version. A search of the Geekbench browser shows single-core scores of around 1,115 and multi-core scores in the 2,800 range for the third-generation iPad Air.

Of course, Geekbench 5 is only one measure of performance, but it is a good indicator that the A14 Bionic looks to be a very powerful chip.

While the iPad Air 4 has already been fully revealed, and will be available to buy from $599 later this month, full reviews have not yet appeared.

Alongside the A14 chip, the iPhone 12 family will be the first Apple devices to benefit from 5G connectivity, and it’s rumored that one or both of the ‘Pro’ versions will inherit the LiDAR sensor from top-end iPad Pro tablets for better camera and AR performance. Rumors persist that the Pro models will also get the much wished for 120Hz display update, but other tipsters insist that won’t be happening this year.

In terms of pricing, a huge leak emerged form this past week indicates that the basic 64GB iPhone 12 (now known as the iPhone 12 mini) will actually undercut the current iPhone 11 by $50 at $649. Obviously, the Pro models will cost more, though, starting at $999 for the 128GB model, and going all the way up to $1,399 for the 512GB iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Leaked benchmark results for the A14 Bionic tease the mighty power of the iPhone 12

A 64gb phone without option for sd card expansion in 2020? Sure or not? And what is the battery capacity?

iPhone 12 Apple event: release date, price, specs for Apple's next flagship
The iPhone 12 Apple event is fast approaching, so get up to speed with all of the leaks and rumours so far

kU4HzqyLKhVfyMsmFbuvhM-2560-80.png

Apple's next flagship is on the brink of launching, with the iPhone 12 event set for Tuesday, October 13. We're in for some big changes compared to last year's iPhone 11, with the biggest being the design, the SoC, and connectivity.

The iPhone 12 will feature Apple's new A14 Bionic processor, and is shrugging off the rounded corners of its most recent predecessors in favor of flatter edges reminiscent of iPhone 5.

All four models will support 5G, although there may a fifth model set to release in 2021 with LTE only, for a smaller price tag.

We didn't get an update about the smartphone at Apple's Time Flies event on September 15 because the iPhone 12 is getting its own dedicated launch event next week.

You can catch up on the announcements from Time Flies below, including the detils on the two new iPads and Apple Watch models Apple has lined up.

Or you can skip straight to the iPhone 12 leaks and rumors we've amassed so far to prep for the Apple event we've all been waiting for..

IPHONE 12 RELEASE DATE, PRICE, LEAKS AND NEWS

We've heard speculation some subtle design changes coming to the iPhone 12, as well as improvements to features like the camera. There's plenty to get excited about, and this phone is set to be the best-looking and most powerful iPhone in history.

Whether you want to know the specs of the iPhone 12 or the best guesses at the iPhone 12 launch date, we've got you covered here: read on to find out everything you need to know about the new iPhone 12.

What we can say for certain is that the arrival of the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max have certainly upped our expectations when it comes to what to expect from the iPhone 12 this year. Those three handsets are stylish, super-powerful, and packed with Apple goodness.

It's also worth bearing in mind that Apple just pushed out a brand new iPhone SE as well: even with a slightly dated interface, the Apple quality oozes through, and it may give us some pointers as to what to expect from the iPhone 12.

Whatever Apple has in store with the iPhone 12, you'll find the best quality leaks, speculation, prices, rumored launch dates and other information in the guide that follows. Keep checking back as the iPhone 12 launch day approaches.

IPHONE 12: APPLE EVENT

Apple usually unveils its new iPhone in September every year, but the pandemic has thrown a spanner in the works of industries across the globe, and Apple hasn't managed to escape the fallout.

The event is expected to take place on Tuesday, October 13 in what we imagine will be a similar format to Apple's Time Flies event.

Once we get official confirmation of the livestream, and when and where to tune in, we'll let you know.

IPHONE 12: RELEASE DATE

ckrx3cgbaPtu6VNg9bH2tj-1366-80.jpg

New iPhones traditionally turn up every September like clockwork, but factory disruptions have meant the launch has been delayed.

Apple has confirmed an October release for the iPhone 12 but has yet to give us a solid date for the iPhone 12 reveal event. We're expecting to see the showcase in October, with the latest rumor putting the launch event squarely on Tuesday, October 13 with pre-orders opening on Friday, October 16.

The iPhone 11 got three variants last year, but multiple sources have confirmed we'll be getting four iPhone 12 models this year along with a slightly revised naming scheme that sees the smallest of the devices sporting the moniker 'iPhone 12 Mini' while the iPhone 12 Max will simply be referred to as the iPhone 12.

So when October 13 rolls around, expect to see the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, and the whopping 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.

There's speculation that the four models could get a staggered release with the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 launching in October, and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max following at a later date – possibly in November.

A fifth, LTE-only iPhone 12 may also be joining the line-up to offer a more affordable option. Dubbed the iPhone 12S, reports suggest it will debut between Q2 and Q4 2021.

With the new iPhone SE for 2020 now on sale, and the iPhone 8 line discontinued, it may well be that the iPhone XR gets the chop from Apple's official range when the iPhone 12 models finally appear. Don't worry though, because something mid-range will be along to take its place.

9hDobjv6MfphNksqM2Eqnf-1366-80.jpg

IPHONE 12: PRICE

When it comes to the cost, the iPhone 12 range will sport the premium price tag you'd expect. The most recent reports predict that the iPhone 12 series will be $100 more expensive that the iPhone 11 to account for the cost of 5G connectivity.

That means that rather than the starting price of $699 for the base model which we were expecting, we're looking at $799, while the iPhone 12 Mini will start at $699.

Meanwhile the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are reported to start from $999 and $1,099 respectively for the 12GB variants.

At a straight conversion, that's around £620 for the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Mini, depending on the pricing structure across four models, £850 for the iPhone 12 Pro, and £930 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Looking back at the iPhone 11 series for comparison, the base model launched at $699/ £729, the iPhone 11 Pro started at $999/ £1,049, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max was priced at $1,099/ £1,149, so we'll probably see those GBP prices get hiked up, given that a straight conversion isn't the most accurate way to get regional pricing.

So if you're in the market for an iPhone 12, you should probably start saving sooner rather than later, or wait until next year to pick up the cheaper 4G model.

IPHONE 12: SCREEN AND DESIGN

nZnaW82QCArooaSoTjpnwT-1366-80.png

We've already seen some stunning renders of what the iPhone 12's new design might look like, based on all of the rumors that have appeared so far – rumors that suggest Apple is going back to a more classic iPhone look, pre-iPhone 6, and is ditching rounded corners for flat edges.

Apple is sticking with the notch, which may have been shrunk ever-so-slightly, and a hands-on video with one of the Pro models indicates that the bezels may also be getting reduced. A recent concept video also gave us a preview of what the iPhone 12 Pro might look like.

Another addition is the new Dark Blue colorway, replacing the Mint Green of the iPhone 11. We've also heard that the iPhone 12 Mini will be sporting six different colorways, while the remaining models will be available in just three: black, white, and silver.

Videos showing dummy units, based on leaked spec sheets, are also doing the rounds. Check out the one below, which shows how the newly reconfigured iPhone 12 might look (or the back of it at least).

A sticking point for Apple has been its displays, with all three of last year's iPhone 11 models sporting 60Hz panels. It looked like Apple was finally upgrading it flagship with a 120Hz display, but that particular rumor looks like its been put to bed at last; so don't expect to see an iPhone 12 model with a 120Hz refresh rate.

IPHONE 12: SPECS AND FEATURES

krRkT3U9kZgtxmLviuJ6VL-1366-80.png

We can guarantee that Apple is going to pack some upgraded components inside the iPhone 12, including its new A14 Bionic chip that is set to give the Snapdragon 875 a run for its money – although recent benchmarks suggest a less powerful version mid-range B14 chip could be coming to the iPhone 12 Mini.

Considering the A13 Bionic is blazing fast, we're looking forward to seeing what its successor brings – and leaked benchmarks suggest it'll be very, very fast indeed.

When it comes to the four iPhone 12 variants, the most notable differences will be the display size, and the additional cameras as the models scale up.

We've also heard that some iPhone 12 models could be making the move to 6GB of RAM for the first time, according to analysts, which would give users better performance when working with multiple apps, large files, and advanced tech such as augmented reality. The cheapest iPhone 12 look set to stick with 4GB of RAM.

QXto7uW.png

On the camera-front, it sounds like the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will pack two cameras, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will house four; although some leaks point to a dual camera setup on the two first two models.

We may also see an upgrade from the iPhone 11's 5P lens for its ultrawide camera, and 6P lens for both its telephoto and wide angle cameras, to a 7P lens module on the iPhone 12.

Apple has never been all that keen to add extra camera lenses, but it's something a lot of phone buyers prioritise now, so the company looks set to up its game in that department.

With the iPad Pro now featuring a LiDAR camera along with everything else, for better depth and augmented reality effects, it would appear the Pro models in the iPhone 12 range are going to follow suit. The fact that the camera bump looks significantly larger than the iPhone 11's also suggests some kind of hardware upgrade is on the cards.

What's more, the general consensus seems to be that 2020 is going to be the year that Apple adopts 5G on its flagship iPhone range, you can expect all four handsets to come 5G ready, with the cheaper handsets using sub-6Hz 5G and the iPhone 12 Pro Max said to use mmWave to take advantage of the full power and speed of the network, making it the ultimate future-proof smartphone. There has been talk that Apple will even build its own 5G antenna, rather than relying on an off-the-shelf component from Qualcomm.

IPHONE 12: OTHER RUMORS AND NEWS

6DMckEVUpDVA26eg2d3WaB-1366-80.jpg

The iPhone 12 will of course come with iOS 14 on board right out of the box, and Apple has already given us plenty of official updates on that: you can look forward to home screen widgets, picture-in-picture mode, improvements to messaging and yes, more emoji later on this year.

We may even see the iPhone 12 might come with an illuminated rear logo, based on a patent spotted last year, but tech in patents doesn't always end up being used in actual products, so don't get too excited – we've not seen or heard anything on this feature since.

We're still slightly concerned by reports that the iPhone 12 models won't be offering much of a battery size upgrade this year, but we trust the engineers at Apple to make sure the necessary optimisations and enhancements are included on the software side to get as much out of the battery as possible.

7d62RmY6fVx2W8YfonrLqP-1366-80.jpg

The iPhone 12 could see the return of Touch ID with an in-screen fingerprint reader, and we wouldn't be surprised if that's the case – it gives users more biometric security options besides Face ID, and the technology now seems to be mature enough for Apple to be happy with its speed.

Finally, there has been talk that Apple won't include a charger or any earbuds in the box with the iPhone 12, to cut down on costs and to save on e-waste. However, a braided Lightning-to-USB-C cable will apparently be included, to go alongside your shiny new iPhone.
