SINGAPORE: The new president of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), Mayor of Central Singapore District Zainudin Nordin, is up to the task and ready to build on the success of his predecessor, Ho Peng Kee.

In the past few years, the Lions have achieved much -- two back-to-back ASEAN Football Federation Cup titles and a bronze at the 2007 SEA Games.

But Singapore's new football chief is setting higher goals.

Mr Zainudin said: "We aim to reach the pinnacle of Asian football -- arriving at the top 20 in Asia is something that we envision for the national team."

Fan support for local football is another area that the new president is looking at improving -- from increasing attendances at S.League matches to bringing back the Malaysia Cup fever, which saw up to 60,000 spectators in the National Stadium.

Despite the huge following, Singapore withdrew from the Malaysia Cup after winning in 1994.

But this year, S.League teams started to play in Brunei for their away matches against DPMM.

Mr Zainudin said: "It will not be impossible for a team from Singapore to take part in Malaysia Cup and if they open the invitation to us, we will seriously consider it as our fans will have even more options in supporting football."

And to attract youngsters, a video on basic football moves will be produced and made available to all on the FAS website.

For more of Mr Zainudin's views on football, tune in to MediaCorp 938LIVE's weekly radio talkshow on Saturday.
