National Service turns 45, MINDEF invites S'poreans to share stories

SINGAPORE: National Service (NS) was established in Singapore 45 years ago, and to mark this anniversary, the Ministry of Defence is inviting all Singaporeans to share their memories of NS.

The online competition, "My NS Story" will take place from now till April on the NS45 website, and reflections will be shared during celebration events throughout the year.

In Parliament on Tuesday, Minister of State Lawrence Wong said the theme, "NS: From Fathers to Sons", highlights that NS "is truly a shared legacy across generations."

He noted that this week, some 3,000 Singaporean men will begin their Basic Military Training, "most of them following in their fathers' footsteps into the service of our country. Just as their fathers did years ago, they will train, sweat and persevere together with other Singaporean sons, and in the process, form friendships, forge bonds and learn the soldiering skills to defend our country."

Singapore "must continue to preserve this sense of shared commitment and responsibility towards NS," he said.

Besides the online competition, MINDEF will be holding its annual Army Open House in May at the F1 Pit Building, to reach out to more members of the public.

There will also be a mobile NS showcase that will tour the heartlands after the Open House.

I wonder what is the point of Spore having such a large defense budget as a proportion of GDP, when we are soo flooded with FOreigners like pRCs, Pinoys etc who are already a security risk to the country...

I think the answer is actually quite simple:

The ruling elites in Singapore want to use those kinds of foreigners as SLAVES to increase (or at least maintain) the wealth and power of the elites, while a VERY strong army (as well as the police, of course) is needed by these elites to ensure that their slaves do NOT rebel against the elites in some kind of CIVIL WAR (during which the police won't be powerful enough to fight back).

Furthermore, since the huge majority of Southeast Asians (especially Malaysians and Indonesians) are NON-elites, and since Singapore is the highest-ranking city and financial centre for not just the Singaporean elites, but also for the rich/powerful non-Singaporean elites in Southeast Asia, simple JEALOUSY by all these non-Singaporean NON-elites from outside Singapore could motivate them to invade Singapore and take over its Government. Whether or not Singapore becomes severely damaged (after any war) would not matter to them; what matters is that they simply want Singapore to become INSIGNIFICANT. After that, they can slowly rebuild Singapore if they want; or they could just focus their resources on other cities within Southeast Asia.

This is why LKY and the PAP were, and still are, so DESPERATE to maintain Singapore's "indepedence", even though we are still so dependent on other countries for the most basic thing of all, i.e. FOOD. So the only solution they can think of is to maintain our MONETARY wealth, in order to be "financially free" or "financially independent", even though there's actually no such thing since being "financially independent" only means not depending on SOME people for money, because EVERY wealthy person NEEDS to depend on CERTAIN people for their wealth, otherwise how else can they RECEIVE their money?

(In a worst-case scenario, ALL those countries who have been exporting food to Singapore might just stop doing it.
And if those countries include Malaysia and Indonesia, the Singapore Government would have no other choice but to order the SAF to literally invade probably Johor to obtain food for Singaporeans.)

So to summarize:
The ruling elites simply want to prevent internal rebellion by residents (usually meaning "civil war") and external invasion by foreign armies.

Initially, it seems to be right to put in place a cohort of men for a quick defense. But, Lee will not let it go away. Such slavery has many good advantages to his plan to hold power perpetually. Think about it.

NS and SAF are getting less associated to defence. Something else is now the main reason.

i also felt i wasted 2 and half years of my life.

but unlike majority of you guys, i got posted to be a medic and was lucky enough to be even going for level 2 medic course. i was laughed by my peers for being a ah gua etc from those more garang unit, but when i ORD i realise what i learn could be still applied outside NS.

After ORD for more than 10 years, i already lost count how many instances i had to rely on my paramedic knowledge that i picked up then. of course the bad thing is when your supervisor knows about your background, you automatically kana arrowed to be the medic of your workplace.

its more of a mixed feeling for me, i hate it for wasting my time, then again i do learn a vital skill.

I had a great time. It was the best period of my life. The pay was excellent and the working hours were fantastic. We worked 2 hours in the morning and 1 hour after lunch and were at the camp squash courts by 3 pm.

At the officers' mess, the beer was 50 cents and the pork chop was $2.50. Uncensored movies were FREE every Thursday night.

ROD was one of the saddest days of my life. It meant I now had to face the real world and start taking life seriously.
