For once, guns in the classroom have proven to be a good thing, at least according to a teacher from Nanjing University. The lecturer, who can been seen on the internet casually brandishing his AK-47 and M-16 assault rifles in front of a room full of students, has become an educational menace, and a popular one at that, reports the Nanjing-based Modern Express.
Mr Wu brings the fight straight to the classroom in his lecture entitled The Structure of Automatic Weapons. The benefit of guns in the classroom is potentially twofold: no one will think about skipping or being late for class, and "it is probably the only chance for us to actually touch 30 different kinds of assault rifles from around the world," said one student. Wu told the Modern Express that the only way to teach students about automatic weapons is to actually allow them to touch one.
Wu would probably never have to resort to live demonstrations to enforce class attendance anyway, as his students refuse to leave at the end of the period. "The two hour class begins at 8:00am and ends at 10:00am" said Wu, "but my students all remain at their seats until noon."
Among the 30 types of rifles, the oldest one is the Type 38 rifle designed by the Japanese before World War II.
Since most of the students taking Wu's class will enter China's defense industry after graduation, the professor received permission from the local public security bureau to teach the students how to take apart real automatic rifles.
The handling of the firearms happens under strict regulations. First, students cannot bring anyone into the class who is not enrolled, are not allowed to take the rifles outside of the classroom, cannot point the weapons, even unloaded, at anyone, and must wait until the end of class to handle the guns. To maintain security on campus, the students must use the toilet inside the classroom.
