My impression of WP's BE rally today.

Hence my good guess that the bulk of the crowd came from elsewhere.

heheh... interestingly, me was wondering how GMS came about with his gauge for the percentage of the crowd coming from other parts of Singapore, it still amazes me :*::*::*:

Pardon me, but may be I should let Sam Leong make the following suggestions / corrections (in green).

Your observation is the most apt in my opinion. As I had said before that I did a bit of scouting around while the rally was going full swing and the residents of Hougnag SMC were quite nonchalent (nonchalant) about the rally and going about doing exactly what they do in any Saturdays.

Yet,there was a huge crowd in the rally. If at least 70% were Hougang SMC residents than (then) the SMC/estate should look like a ghost town, which it did not.Hence my good guess that the bulk of the crowd came from elsewhere.

Now my sentiments are exactly the same as yours that Hougang SMC residents had already decided whom to vote.Hey,they (have) been voting for WP for the past 21 years....and I don't think this one will be any different.Besides,it was LTK they have been voting for and they still see his face around. And I don't think the young voters of Hougang SMC are any different from their old folks either---that Yaw's gallivanting made any difference. Most ,I speculate, will still vote for WP....there might be some vote swings but nothing crucial.

But politicking in not so simple and WP's fiasco with Yaw and Sanjeev slayed with racism cannot be wiped out of people's memories. It will linger to haunt WP.Hence the future of WP as a credible political party is at stake.

GMS,I speculate, has an axe to grind with WP.Hence his attributes. But I would not want to badmouth GMS.Because even when he left WP,he did no damage to WP.And any personal attack on LTK---he was the sole voice to defend him.But things must have taken a nasty turn in the heat of GE 2011 horse trading.Again,I speculate,WP leadership must have been most unkind to him. Thus his personal vendetta.

Sad to see GMS descending to this level.

Thanks.I will remember that on my next submission of a new theory on quantum physics to scientific journals. It's entitled empirical evidences of a cow in a vacuum.

Go ahead and do the spell check pal.

There is no need to do any spell check.

It looks like you are from the younger internet generation.

While leaving did a bit of scouting and went around Hougang Mall,Kang Kar kopitiam,NTUC and etc.The Saturday's crowd was just as much as any other Saturdays. It is an indication that the actual Hougang residents simply went on their usual ways. The huge crowd I reckon must be all over from Singapore.

I am not sure how accurate your ground observations will be. Hougang Central is the town centre where Hougang Mall, MRT Station, Bus Interchange, shops, etc are located. This is where residents from all parts of Hougang (not just Hougang SMC) congregates. Naturally, you will see large crowd in the vicinity.

Nice Gook,

I have no axe to grind against WP or its leaders. I am just saying exactly what a normal person has observed, though with an advantage of little experience in politics.

Though you are right that I may be a bit upset at what WP did in last GE but all I can say is that I have squared it off with some strategic moves. It is up to the new leadership in NSP to capitalize on these advantages.

Let's see:

GMS and Sylvia Lim in 2006 - 43%
GMS in 2011 - 45%
Sylvia Lim in 2011 - 55%.

'nuff said about your "strategic ability".

I have squared it off with some strategic moves. It is up to the new leadership in NSP to capitalize on these advantages.

Dear GMS,

I have been lurking SOC and seen in you in action as MADCOW.You certainly cannot be as what they badmouth you here in this forum. You are targeted because of what you say.But many in WP core leadership escapes the wrath of the public because of what they don't say.See,the WP never said a single word about foreigners flooding Singapore in the rally.

Why don't you concentrate your time and effort building up ground level support instead of wasting your time in the net?....you,of all the person who should knows how unkind are faceless, nameless netizens are.

Just my 2 cents.

You see there is no such thing as a cow in a vacuum. How can there be anything in a vacuum at all?

The empirical aspect of a cow in a vacuum is a joke among the scientific community.

Have a good day!
Unfortunately, I am a non-resident, and have not been a resident of Singapore for more than thirty years.

You are right. WP managed to ride on the waves created by other parties even when they didn't contribute much to the wave making in GE2011.

But that's ok for me. They have made inroad but they are not on steady feet. Of course people like me are easy soft targets to be blamed by their members and supporters for their fumbles but as time passes by, people will see much clearer what are really the problems.

I just hope that WP don't squander away the hard earn trust and confidence from the middle ground voters else we will be back to square one like the 1990s. It took twenty years to convince the middle ground voters to vote for opposition parties for various reasons. But once lost, it will never be the same again. Do we need to wait for another 20 years?

Mr nice commies, the commercial sector of hougang central is the last place to gauge the voters mood as let be honest, not part of hg smc. To really gauge the mood, u would have to vist the coffeeshops at blk 327, 322 and 309. These three coffeeshop cover the bulk of the smc.

based on the pictures i've seen online, its apparent that WP's hougang by-election rally hasnt really shrunk much compared to the one in GE2011. but i think the bulk of the attendance was made up of supporters from far & wide, while, voters of hougang dont really bother joining the crowd, bcos they'll continue voting for them... come hell or high water.

Squared it off with some strategic moves? Stop dreaming! You are flattering yourself. I recall someone once said, self praise is international disgrace.

Both of you have raised a pertinent point.I have no argument with that. But I had made my observation accordingly. And I am not going to split my hair that I alone am right and both of you are wrong.

Notwithstanding, just look at these figures.Hougang SMC total population is about 37k...and out of that the voting population is about 24k.And if we go by Yahoo's head count about 15k present in the rally. That's almost 63% of adults living in Hougang SMC....can you imagine more than half of the adult population in a constituency out of their homes for more than 3 hours in just 1 place?...

This really stretches all our imagination ain't it?

He checked their IC before allowing them to pass?

no... i agree those at the rally come from other parts of singapore. to go to a rally does not mean i am a supporter of the party and live in that GRC/SMC. those who already lived in hougang since the 80s already know all about WP, so a WP rally become a indirect way for WP to spread their messages to others living in other part of the island. how many fence sitters votes will WP lose, i dunno but if pap only play to lose at a smaller margin, then pap standard had also fallen very low.

i too went to the pap rally yesterday just to listen to what desmond had to offer. a couple hundreds of real hougang residents are there too. How to know a residents from a pap dog is very simple. the dogs will clap at whenever prompt by a whistle wheras a resident will just stand there with his arms across his chest. and btw, pap filled the gallery with eldery bus in so resident lan lan had to stand at the jogging tracks. i stay there for half an hour and left before the end of desmond speech as he said was what he had done to certain individual residents in the course of him being the adviser of the crassloot. hello, not all of hougang are that dirt poor and he never once say anything for the middle class. i got bored and left. if pap continue this type of election strategy, it will take pap another generation to recapture hougang.

wanted to beat the jam after prior experiences at WP rallies during the last GE :D:D:D
