Yes. Is around 20 cent per day rental only..For $5 don't need think so much.
There is also no need to rush into it. Just rent it first. You can even rent out for $10 per day to let Ft stay there first until the school discover it then say. There is nothing to lose.
Have to wake up very early, many physical manual work to be done..
Oh. Then can do leh...1.If you become a school canteen operator, you need not presume that you will have to wake up early like other Hawkers do, perhaps in the past but NOT now in this era Most Hawkers work only 8hrs a day, either in the morning shift - from 4am to 2pm or from 2pm to 10pm, thus unknowing customers will find it strange when their favorite stalls are closed....Hawkers too are fellow Humans & would need rest & recuperation......only new citizens or the hungry would work extremely hard & smart, with double shifts to earn their living in 5 figure salaries...
2. It can be 8 to 4 job if you wish it so.
You can actually start work at 8am at a school canteen, if you dont mind forgoing the morning crowd earnings. You will have 2hrs to prepare your food, as school recess is often at 10am - more than enough time to prepare simple healthy nutritious food if you are intelligent enough with food that appeal to kids.
After that, when the kids return to classes, you have another 2hrs to do the same for the lunch & early kids attending the afternoon classes, & after that, another 2hrs for their recess time, & with enough time to wash up, prepare food for the next day & leave the school at 5 pm.
3. No doubt that there will be 2 major school holidays a year - June & beginning mid Nov, that there may be no customers. However, schools do still have ECA events if you work closely with the Principal to SCHEDULE your work & earnings during such periods, or you may chose to take a break, should you be smart & hardworking enough to make hay while the sun shines to provide you with enough income to enjoy the breaks....
4. ULTIMATELY, it is not just about money or profits. The aim is to ensure that NO kid will go hungry in schools or during school activities, & they must be provided with healthy, nourishing & AFFORDABLE foods for their biological physical growth - rich or poor as we Singaporeans will NOT leave anyone behind. They are Singapore's next innocent generations & our future...
We will not scam kids or their parents, nor are taxpayers that rich in contributions to afford free food to kids. CO - PAY, is the only way, to stretch that social expenditure costs further...each plays a part to have a thriving & progressive society...
Thank you very much!!Before you decide on being a school canteen operator - KNOW yourself, KNOW what you will be facing against, a thousand battles fought, a thousand won....
1. Visit the school with permission from the school Principal to make your own market research assessments - ethnic quotas, canteen kitchen facilities, competitors, type of foods that appeals to the kids, etc.
2. Should you deemed it fruitful, then decide on the type of food to serve. Selling ready made food by contractors only makes you a subcontractor & your earnings will be limited, so such is not viable for the long term.
However, it can be of use - to test the market before you plonk in your life savings into it thru purchase of food & kitchen utensils. For just $5/mth space rental, it is worth a try.
3. To further ensure that your savings can be stretched further, visit companies that are winding up to buy their utensils or kitchen appliances, as such are usually sold at a fraction of its original price.
4. If you own a car, it would help in transporting your daily foodstuff to the school. If you dont own a car, grab car services can help, but that will be a fractional cost to be factored into your selling price of products.
Contractor food mostly those steam Pau or cake right? Before you decide on being a school canteen operator - KNOW yourself, KNOW what you will be facing against, a thousand battles fought, a thousand won....

Thank you very much!!Yes. They are mostly big steady & reliable firms with large industrial space with a pool workers to churn out vast quantities of food based upon economy of scale, to their subcontractors. Such foods are likely considered as snacks or tidbits - pau, song kueh, confectioneries, etc which comes at a higher price, leaving only the subcontractor to earn pennies rather than dollars.
However, if you are resourceful enough, there are many stay home housewives whom have the time, even early hours & can cook up anything in their home kitchen & earn some side income - nasi lemak, curry puffs, cakes, etc at a fraction of cost than those from big firms. And as a start, you do not need vast quantities to sell, as you would have to test market first, not on WHAT YOU LIKE TO SELL, but WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE TO EAT.
However, to go on this road, you will need at least 2 independent contractors, in the event should one take MC, you will still have another to rely on for supplies.
To find such housewives, you can advertise, seek out cooking contest winners often held at community centers, or word-of-mouth thru friends contact. Ensure that you taste their food regularly, for quality control. And also, they should be near your home or near the school, so as to cut down on travelling costs & time to pick up the products.
Based upon our Consumer Price Index - the price of flour/wheat had risen considerable, but that would have to take in account of GST hikes, as a mere 1% rise does not affect just one item, but upon the ENTIRE supply chains for that one item =1% +1% +1% +1% etc, etc.
However, should you take the avenue of purchasing WHOLE SALE for the ingredients for your food product, the costs can be considerably lower.
Thank you very much!!
No. It is the insignificant nobody me that should thank you, for giving me the opportunities to SHARE views & perspectives to not only you, but to the many other readers whom read SBF by the thousands daily, & hopefully it may help others thru your thread....
The Hawker trade had always been looked down by morons in office attire & staring at screens for hours daily while earning a pittance, struggling with bills to pay for their condos, cars, kids development courses, etc, whom presume appearance matters, without realizing it is deep pockets & living LIFE that matters, regardless if one is in singlet & bermuda shorts daily.
The Hawker industry is an honest one, thanks to our visionary great Founding & Forefathers whom created a hygienic environment not found in most other countries for consumers on a budget to have meals & operator opportunities for those whom may not be necessarily academically inclined but great in cooking skills or management to be on par with others to critically put food on the tables for loved ones & society, more so for the school canteen operators whom operate under very tight profit margins to ensure that no growing kid, rich or poor goes hungry or hurt the finances of their parents - the building blocks of civilization - whom already have much bills to settle monthly....
Thus, if anyone in office attire or sophisticated dresses looks down on you, just flash that Audemars Piguet watch you paid thru much savings, dedication, hardwork & little savings but built up over years, on your wrist to the small minded & snobbish whom will never be able to own one in their lifetime by office salary, to make them look small.
Such is unnecessary of course, as you owe no one a living & each is responsible for the choices they made in life, to either enjoy wise choices made or suffer the consequences of bad choices. What matters is yourself & your care & concern for your loved ones, & society, that truly matters....

Become boss need pay worker salaryI am not sure what are your plans or your workload, but perhaps you may consider hiring of workers on a part-time basis, from 8am to 2pm at the avg market rate of $10/hr daily paid, as your enterprise will be on test & trial period.
You can advertise on media or just take a walk in the neighborhood, & ask if anyone or your friends if they would like to to have a job.
After the trial & you have more confidence with your enterprise, then you may consider full time staff.
