Recently I created a new position because I need an admin assistant and my employer also has enough S-Pass quoto. After interviewing 3 foreigners (2 pinos & 1 PRC), I found that they are unwillingly to some run errand works been assigned to this position and also the budgeted salary that I can offer them $2,500 a month... they find it too low and their expected are $3,500 a month

So I hired a young Singaporean fresh graduate from Polytechnic instead. The salary been offered only $1,900 a month :p

The unqualified (no uni degree) PRC Engineers in my company were unhappy as to why I took in a fresh poly grad instead of a experience foreigners (preferably PRC). I am not too bother to explain things to such people

I must say nowadays foreign hiring managers tend to hire their own people and younger Singaporeans will suffer in coming years :(

Running errands is fun! I love to run errands and eat snake at my job :D

Good for you. Hire more singkies. But make sure they are worth their pay

I met one ah neh regional manager of a medicine company. He said he tends to hire his indians colleages because he can work well with them.

I suppose our SGP pride culture makes us difficult to work with???

Dont show me that kind of as if i owe you kinda of look i slap you then you know. LoL!

I think I knew this ah neh (sound familiar) and I also heard he brought in his own people (ex-coworkers)...in the end they all fed up with him and whole department quitted :D

Initially HR filtered sinkie resumes and gave me foreigners' resume. And its turned out that foreigners are so fussy and demanded higher than budgeted salary for general administrative works. So our HR recommended local poly graduates for me to interview.

Well I did hired one of them.

This Singaporean guy was hardworking and has a positive attitude. Working overtime is also not an issue to him.

My PRC co-workers are so sore-eyes

dumbasses, they do not know a good deal when they see :D

$2,500 a month ... my HR priority for this position was foreigners first.

During all the interviews, my HR manager (pro-foreigners) was presented and she was also surprised that foreigners had such high expectation on the local employers

Why your HR pro foreigner?

TS, good on you with poly bloke. HR must understand there's a social cost, so easy to fall for easier option (as with many other foreign preferences).

Anyhow, anybody you hire is a toss of the dice -that's what probation period's for

Because our HR alway has a perception that foreigners can work overtime and graveyard shift and the SG & Msia workers cannot.

I would say that it doesn't depend whether the potential employee be local, or foreigner, but whether s/he fits the requisites of the position they will be paid for. Office is autocratic, no one should question the boss who s/he wishes to employ or sack. There will always be examples of good or bad employess be they foreign or local.

Cheers!

$1,900 for a Poly grad is a great deal, particularly since admin assistant doesn't require much experience.

Make sure you guide the poly grad well because the prc may want to find fault with that poor bloke.
One reason why the foreigners ask for more is because they need to pay rental n poky guy no need.

Well done, we must hire local, do not let those FT to tell us who to take in, if they are not happy ask them to FO back.

Our budgeted salary is $2,500 a month for a foreigner. I only spend $1,900 a month to hire a local. It is saving to the company :D

I can understand foreigners need to pay rental and airtickets (return) to their hometown. But their exchange rate SGD 1 = RMB 5 is favourable to them and in China the cost of living is much lower than SG. While every dollar we earn in SG is really low in value because our cost of living is high with housing, foods, medical, transportation and other basic expenses can already killed you.

Our company paid PRC engineers (no uni degree) $2,300 a month with half yearly increment of $50. They are S-Pass holders and after paying rental of about $600 a month and other living expenses. Their net saving is about $1,300 a month convert to RMB 6,500 a month which is a good monthly net saving to bring home to China.

Yes, we as hiring managers must change our mindset and hire cheaper local talents :D

Be grateful that you foreigners have a stable job in Singapore...Back in your country. You SUFFER !

Hire local is cheaper mah $1.9k!
And offer increment of $300 after 3 month if he/she show improvement and can work.
After a year offer another $200~$300 if he/she can help u to manage.
That win win for both!

Not so much. Once confirmed, his increment will be $100 and base pay will become $2000. Annual increment between 3% to 5% of base pay.

PRC engineers is on another different increment scheme :)
