MANY Singaporeans are still clinging on to a lifestyle of excesses, incurring debts they could have avoided, said an MP in Parliament on Tuesday.

Urging them to be prudent and to steer clear of excesses in these trying times, Mr Wee Siew Kim, MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, said Singaporeans caught in financial bind must make the hard adjustments - a point which was raised in President SR Nathan's address at the opening of the second session of Parliament last week.

In his speech during the debate on the President's address, Mr Wee said on Tuesday that while the financial freefall seems to be over, the economy may drag at the bottom for some time.

Between earning S$700 a month and S$11,000 of monthly allowance for an MP, I am pretty sure most Singaporean will be able to live prudently if he/she is earning S$11,000.

Tell that to someone earning S$700 a month.

The government mention we should do some purchasing and spending so our economy can recover earlier.
But if people lost their job or there is a cut in income earning.
Where the money come from to use for spending?
It is pretty obvious.

Pardon me if I am wrong, wasn't this the MP, whose daughter lambasted SINgaporeans?

Why doesn't he preach this to himself & his cohorts, that they are clinging to a lifestyle of excesses, their renumeration should follow the average of all the South East Asian politicians.:(

Wee and his elite uncaring daughter are really the ones living a lifestyle of excess... He can afford to take his daughter for bowling, golf or piano lessons if he want to. Most Singaporeans cannot afford a lifestyle of extravagance and excesses ike those 2 uncaring elites.

Agree. I recall that during the last time where the inflation hit all time high, the poor were the hardest hit as all the prices of the basic goods were increased. Dun the MIW understand that for every family, there are things that are bare necessity and must be purchased no matter how poor...things like food, transport, housing, etc. Nowadays even if you have a monthly income of $2500 month for a family of 4, it is likely that your finance would be very tight.

For the MIW, talk is cheap. After a while, must say something during parliament so as to earn his MP allowance mah..Is it now around $190000 annually?

This is actually true. Most salaried Singaporeans are saddled with long term mortgage, $1/2 to $1 mil loan is not uncommon for condos and high end living. The MP is only sounding a harbinger of what is to come in the face of sustained economic slowdown with rising unemployment.

This administration has no longer the moral authority to talk about financial excesses when it has lost billions investing in failed financial institutions.
The biggest excess I have seen in this little dot so far is using a stater airline owned jumbo as a flying hospital to fly a single patient back from the UK.

The second biggest excess(s) is the payment of the highest salaries in the world to those ministers and MP's when the man in the street are suffering.

BY the way a huge chunks of those debts that he asked people to avoid are probably from Citi, DBS, ect2- where the govt are the major shareholders.
Talk about double talk-he should tell those financial institutions to exercise prudent lending first -starting with DBS.

I said many time liao, ask the MPs to live in a HDB , and take home pay of 2500 per month. Perhaps, they will LEARN to treat others better if they live like that for a few years.
