MP echoes calls for PSLE to be scrapped

They have enough smart alecs to make it as scientists and engineers in NASA and large corporations where such skills are needed. For their local social skills, ability to present oneself and conduct one's image in a social setting are more important. In any case, why would a professional football player need to ace exams in mathematics and/or literature? Or a rock musician, or a truck driver? Or a cocaine dealer?

Cheers!

In the US, only 40% of students in Bachelor and Master's are male. Experts ascribe this to a lack of focus in school by the male cohort. Will doing away with exams encourage such a trend?

I am more concerned about why the ruling party MPs can swing so wildly from one extreme to another in such a short time, reminiscent of the Stop at 2 to the More the Better transition. I am concerned which is actually the better idea. Before or after?

In the land of the blind, the one eye fucker is king.

It does their bank account no good to go against their gay ruler.

Since we're on this topic, will any MP push for NS to be scrapped?

"I am all for slaying the PSLE sacred cow. But we need to first agree on an alternative way of deciding who goes to which secondary school, other than by way of a common exam," Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MP Hri Kumar wrote on his blog last Friday.

So it is ok for PAP MP to propose slaying the sacred cow without offering any ideas/solution. If opposition do this they will be ridicule to no end.

Wait till one of their son commit suicide because of NS. Then maybe can consider...that is why got "white horse" system, if not they sure run road.

You think their children will be like Prince Harry go frontline? Dream on.

Don't like that say lah BK, one of their sons did spend many long hours studying night soil leh.

The results speak for themselves. 1/3 of the high net worth individuals are Indonesians. God knows how large a proportion of the remaining 2/3 do the Chinks, Americunts, British and Japanese constitute. Public debt is among the highest in the world. Less than 20% of Sinkies are true owners of their homes. The purchasing power of sinkies is so embarrassingly low that the GIC-owned UBS daren't include Sinkieland in their latest price and earnings report. The reality is that the education system has failed to produce a workforce capable of generating wealth and prosperity for all.

How about who donates more to which school? Some parents will like that, especially those whose children are not likely to do well in any exam. Elite parents are not exempted. I think the Govt will get a new revenue stream from here.

I didn't know all these PAP MPs study H. G.Wells like the Bible?

Fully agree. A good teacher is able to motivate. During Sec 1 and 2, our English teacher did away with our school text - Contact (I think that was its title) and got us to read and discuss the Straits Times' editorial page each lesson; although not everyone in class got onto it, it encouraged me to take interest in national policies and their outcomes, and improved my English composition tremendously.

Cheers!

The best teachers are in the neighbourhood schools. They try all kinds of way to motivate the students. They can really value-add. But the best results come from the elite schools because the school environment and the student body play an even greater part. Once all schools lose the ability to collect the cream of the students. Elite schools will be like any other school, descending into mediocrity.

I hope the Old Man doesn't borrow these words from me.

Remember when the duration of full-time NS was reduced to 2 years from 2.5 years. It curiously coincided with the enlistment of a certain white horse.

Doing away with PSLE now? I'm sure some elite's imbecilic kid is in primary school now, due to take his/her PSLE in a few years' time.

There is no such thing as coincidence.

COE?

the rocket scientists and quantum physicists will succeed despite the appalling public school system. good motivated students will succeed regardless of their schools/family backgrounds/social circumstances etc. give them the lousiest teachers and they will still seek out knowledge on their own.

then there are the middle band of students, those who need some handholding and guidance to bring out the best in them. this is where good teachers really shine in bringing out the best in what seem like average students.

finally there are those at the bottom, who need the most intervention and the best teachers to even give them any hope of life beyond prison, gangs and dish washing (albeit dish washing now pays $3k/mth)

education will benefit everyone, including rock stars, musicians, actresses, entertainers and even cocaine dealers. most especially cocaine dealers as they will be the most likely to get entangled with the police.

IF the purpose of streaming were driven altruistically by the desire to better allocate good teachers to weaker students, then streaming would be a good thing. unfortunately because of streaming as we know it today, weaker students are denied access to the limited supply of good teachers. ideally all teachers should be good, but in reality we probably have a bell curve of good to bad teachers.

this is a bit of a sidetrack, but its a good thing for the PAP to correct bad decisions swiftly (hence the appearance of policy swings) rather than to let a bad decision fester. time alone will not make a bad decision into a good one.

it was unfortunate that a good teacher back then was one who broke the rules. i believe the system has evolved since and teachers now actively use the newspapers to engage their students.
