Excitement about “IS-Lekreading” at school in Wiener Neustadt

In a school in Vienna's Neustadt school, a book covered in the classroom is currently causing massive excitement and discomfort among some students and parents. It is supposed to be about the Islamic State.

– In Wiener Neustadt, German lessons at a new middle school caused excitement with some parents. In the second semester of a fourth grade, a book will be the focus of attention, which deals exclusively with the Islamic State (IS). The FPÖ Lower Austria strongly criticises this teaching design.

Criticism of school policy

Michael Sommer, spokesperson for education at the FPÖ Lower Austria and a member of parliament, describes the school's actions in a programme as a “kneefall before radical Islam ”. He calls for an immediate change in the content of the lessons and explains: "The German lessons are to teach students our language in writing and writing and not to work a book on the IS and the Holy War for an entire semester."

Some parents have concerns about the subject of the book and would find it unsuitable for 13 to 14 year olds. “Some mothers and fathers are literally desperate,” says Sommer. An affected mother describes her impressions: “My son goes to middle school. They got a book they need to read. I saw there purely and I was sick.” Although the parents expressed their concerns, they were rejected by the school. The school stressed that the selection of reading and the subjects was solely a responsibility.

Glorification of radical Islam?

The content of the book, which according to summer "glorifies radical Islam and IS and highlights Christians as enemies" is criticized. He is outraged that pupils "have to put themselves in such persons in school work and write texts from their point of view". This is “almost already scandalous”, said the FPÖ editor.

Sommer announced a request to the Lower Austrian Education Directorate to investigate the incident. “There must be complete education and consequences here,” he said. It is particularly worrying that the content of the book is the only material for the next school work, although it triggers “massive unease in some children” when reading.

What the book is about

According to Heutetoday's report, it is the book entitled "Half Moon on Raqqa". The description says: "Nico's former friend, Leila, has run away from home and moved to the jihad in Syria. How could this happen without anyone in the class noticing anything extraordinary about her?” During his investigations, Nico meets Ahmed in a mosque, a young person with whom he once played football. Nico spends a lot of time with Ahmed and his friends, but comes deeper and deeper into the network of radical Islamists and at the same time in the sights of the state security.

Later he and Ahmed want to leave for Syria, but Nico's mother prevents her son from doing so. This is how Ahmed travels alone. From Syria he sends Nico “enthusiastic emails”. But then the situation changes, as the book description continues to say, “and soon Ahmed will no longer become clear whether the enemy comes from outside or is within ISIS.”
