Asia More jobs await Pinoys in Singapore

MANILA, Philippines - More jobs await Filipino workers in Singapore, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) reported yesterday.
POEA chief Jennifer Manalili said they have received numerous job orders for talented and skilled Filipino workers in the field of arts.
“The job order calls for 100 dancers and singers, 50 mascots and 30 stuntment who would receive a monthly pay of $1,800 or roughly P58,000,” Manalili disclosed.
Manalili said the employment contract will be two years, but renewable for another term.
According to Manalili, round trip ticket will also be provided by the employer, Resorts World @ Sentosa to those who would qualify for the jobs.
Applicants must be 18 years and above and able to speak well in English can come for audition at Studio M, V G Miranda building in Makati.
“This will prove that despite the economic meltdown, Singapore remains to be a stable partner in the employment of Filipino workers,” Manalili said.
Meanwhile, Employees of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) yesterday protested the impending retrenchment of the department’s more than 200 regular and casual workers.
Members of the DOLE-Employees Union (EU) said a total of 203 contractual, casuals and emergency hires were ordered removed from the plantilla as part of the government’s on-going rationalization program.
“Its very ironic that while the government, particularly DOLE promises to generate one million new jobs annually, it will implement a mass retrenchment of workers amid the global financial crisis,” DOLE-EU said.
The union claimed that officials of the department tried to “cover-up” the mass retrenchment by offering to affected employees transfer to other positions, placement to regional offices or upgrading schemes.
Leaders of the union further claimed that DOLE is set to adopt contractualization and flexible working arrangements among the employees by offering project-based employment.
