MOE may have good recruitment but the resignation rate of experienced teachers is very high. Recruiting 500 fresh graduates and losing 500 trained teachers may show no nett lost in the number of teachers. But the experience level of the teaching profession has gone down. Worse is if the numbers resiging is more than the number recruited.
Recently, MOE has seen a lot of older teachers retiring. These teachers form the core of the teachers as they are on pension scheme and cant leave whenever they like unlike the younger teachers who are under the full CPF scheme.
As the years go by, these pensionable teachers wil retire and there will be abad shortage of teachers in MOE.
MOE has come out with some schemes to attract back resigned teachers Hopefully these schemes will bring some relief for MOE. But these are reactive measures.
What MOE needs to do is to make teaching the core purpose of teachers and not load them with non teaching matters

Like gardening, doing photocopying work in the office, part-time traffic warden, security personnel, logistic officer..etc, other than TEACH!

How many of you, still do remember your teachers?. Me still so, you guys read Lat? (the comics), I have a Malay Chekgu, a Chinese female teacher looking like the characters in Lat. My Secondary school teacher look exactly like those old B&W movies, the 'jiat chee kua' (the corrupt official, with the white nose).

Anyway, I still have fond memories of my teachers, especially those who really gave their time, teaching, listening & being, 'one of us'.

CAn we safely say that, the teachers today are in the profession for the PAY?

Peter tan could be bother to improve my english. He group those students weak in english and allow to progress at a lower pace. From then on, my english improve tremendously. If not for him, I would had fail my english and my o level.
Some of the teachers are still trap in a time warp using old pattern to teach new generations of students. They shall not be missed.

In spite of losing teachers, the fuckers up there will not admit and I understand there is a hiring freeze. Uniquely fucked Singapore.

now market is bad, alot will jump to teaching.

but being a teacher here is not just teaching, it is more of showing yourself. You can be a good teacher but you will not be a successful teacher.

You can be teaching very well and all your students give good results, but someone who cant teach can be promoted faster then you. Other then the usual balls carrying, they also look at what other activities and role you have taken up.

Like leading a choir which is trained by outsider while all you have to do is sit down there every week and take attendance. If your choir wins some award, you will get recognised and promoted much faster then alot of people.

I have a friend who is bad at teaching but very good at IT. Very often there is alot of mistakes in marking, unable to cover topics on time. But he was promoted he was 1 of the only few who is good at IT and he was promoted to a Vice Principal at a very young age.

So those who really want to teach might not be recognize in the first place, and the level of job satisfaction is much lower.

then they also hire FT engineers to teach maths/ science, then they hire FT performing arts rejects to teach arts/ performing arts, then they hire FT sports rejects to teach PE & handle sports ECAs.
